Shotput

Hey guys, I guess quite a few of you out there are probably college or high school throwers. I want to train for shotput using weights. What are the lifts that I should focus on? Also, do you guys recommend any supps? I was thinking of creatine and Power Drive. Thanks in advance.

Remember that most of the power comes from the legs and the hips. This means squats, deadlifts, and olympic lifts. Really focus on the olympic lifts. In my opinion, a clean and press would be ideal. I do remember getting killed by a guy in high school who had impeccable technique who was a lot smaller and weaker than me. My form tended to break down a lot because i was more interested with the girls at track practice than my actual throwing. Good Luck.

Goldberg is correct. Push presses are also good. Also, it doesn’t hurt to perform the usual exercises. Bench press, squat, Deads, and like I said, some type of pressing movement like a push press. Although, like he was saying, techinique is a very big factor. I was pretty strong. Benching around 345, squating well over 400, yet, my technique was only fair. I’d throw 50-56 feet while guys with better technique would hit 60-68. Working with a heavier shot also seemed to help. Trust me on the technique factor though. There were 180 pound guys throwing well over 60 feet because they had superb technique. As far as supplements, stimulating the CNS seemed to help. Things like Power Drive stacked with ephedrine and caffeine will work well. Creatine will help as well. Hope this helps.
