Shoes or Barefoot for O-lifts?

Should I wear my regular gym shoes or go barefoot for my olympic lifts? I will be squatting, deadliftting for reps, and snatching.

At least your regular gym shoes. You should be wearing something with preferably a raised heel and a stiffer sole - running shoes have the heel but they’re very flexible which isn’t desired. When you get up to heavier weights the shoes will benefit you more.

But yes, your gym shoes over barefoot IMO.

The raised heel may also help with squats. However, don’t let it be a crutch. Deadlifts go barefoot; a raised heel will adversely alter your COG.

for squats or dlifts, I could go barefoot, because there’s almost zero foot movement.

but for snatches or c&j, barefoot sounds very painful, ouch !!! because of the explosive lift off and and rapid foot movement, couldn’t imagine doing that barefoot, think of the chaffing on soles of the feet.

Yeah shit. imagine the pain when you re-stomp on the snatch. Or if you snatch into jerk that would almost break your heel.

God, now I want to go back to the gym and do some cleans. Thanks a lot, why don’t you just g make a thread about chinese food so I want to eat that too.

barefoot OLs, especially in the deep squat position of a full snatch, can help with flexibility and stability, especially when an athlete returns to wearing heeled OL shoes.

I believe DJ has recommended this also.

Barefoot lifting can be a very helpful teaching tool. Pavel also notes going blindfolded, too. I lift barefoot on grass or cement often in the summers (Utah winters…nope).

It’s not an “all the time” thing, but a nice addition. It teaches a thing called prioception (I think I spelled it right), like that feeling you know a plane is turning at night…even though you have no “real” feedback.

Don’t be stupid with this, of course…

It is also a fun old school way of training, too.

“A raised heel will adversely alter your COG.”

What is COG?
