Shocking hand pain

During deadlifts the muscle below my thumb in m hand started to get a shock feeling. Like an eletrical shock. I had surgery on that arm almost a year ago with no problems but it could be related. Does or has anyone else experenced this? Now it happends when I grip a certain way. Anyone have any clue?

Stop deadlifting near power outlets.

Seriously though, where on your arm did you have surgery?

The last one was on my ulna’s side in the middle between my hand and elbo. The surgery was just to repair fascia that was opened in the origonal surgery to keep swelling down etc. It’s weird that this all of a sudden happend. I have done deadlifts post surgery with no problems a few times. The other weird thing is the surgery was on the ulnas side but my thumb (radius) is what hurts. Like the nerve in there is a little out of it. Maybe the superficial branch of radial nerve. I have no idea…

Try ART.

www.activerelease.com and find a provider in your area. Its magic.

This has happened to me occasionally…damndest thing…

I have just switched the grip on that hand (Mixed…Over/Under > Under/Over) and it has gone away. I have always figured it to be related to the rotation of my shoulder joint.

I am sure that some of the medical practitioners will be along any moment…

Well I’m not a medical practicioner, but I do have experience with this problem.

Brown, I think you said the problem youself. ‘Maybe the superficial branch of radial nerve.’ I had the exact problem, to the point where I pretty much couldn’t use my hand due to the pain and had exploratory surgery done. The posterior interosseous (branch of the radial nerve)had been pushed out of it’s groove and was being squished against the bones by the muscles when I used my hand (mainly the thumb and first two fingers). The doc put the nerve back into it’s protection and said wait a few months. Voila I’m as good as new. I actually had this done on both forearms, same problem, same result.

So, you. Maybe when the previous surgery was done, the nerve got moved around a bit, or it can do it as the result of tramua, overuse (like lifting),or just for no reason. Therapy can be effective, but if it isn’t then surgery to re-place the nerve is the only option (if this is indeed the problem, and it is very hard to detect without surgery unfortunately).

Good luck.

Its weird because it only hurts at random grips. I just lifted and 40lb dumbell with no pain but I pick something else up a different way and its pain. It also hurts when I bend my wrist to the left in a full ROM. I don’t think I could deal with more surgery. I have had many things happen (not weight related) so am hoping this will go away. Thanks for the opinions guys

My advice…don’t just wait to see if it goes away or gets worse. I’d suggest that you face the problem BEFORE it becomes serious and sidelines you for several months. The effect of an overuse unjury left untreated could be terrible. At the very least seek out an active release person in your area and have an assessment. It wouldn’t hurt.
