Did anybody catch that fight?
How awesome is Cung Le?

I like Cung Le. I don’t really know much about San Shou. I have never sparred with a San Shou guy. Looks really awkward and frustrating. I have seen some san shou guys fight in shootboxing and making things very tough for some of the orthodox kickboxers. They pull off some tough techniques.
I didn’t know if he would beat Frank. Now he has so I think things are looking good for him. If he can get some more experience and confidence fighting guys like Lawler, Misaki and Villasenor. If he beats those guys I think it would be safe to consider him a top mw.
I have been trying to find info… I take it Cung Le defeated Frank Shamrock

I was surprised there was not more promotion of this matchup
The fight was on dailymotion.com earlier.
I’m a little confused why Frank didn’t make more of an effort to take Cung down, but it was an exciting fight.
The rest of the card was okay. Why didn’t Nick Diaz fight? I was told he was on the card.

Frank kept saying in the promotion for this fight that he will not take Cung down. He wanted to beat Cung at his own game. I guess it’s his pride that kept him from taking Cung down.
There was an attempt at a takedown in the first round, but Cung got out of it pretty effectively.
What kept Frank Shamrock from taking Cung Le down is that his wrestling sucks balls. Renzo looked like a NCAA champion against him.

Here is the majority of the fight (I couldn’t find the last part):
get it before it’s gone.
By the way, has anybody else noticed how well Frank withstood all those roundhouse kicks to the head? Reminiscent of Mark Hunt. Granted, Cung Le is no Cro Cop, but impressive nonetheless. Especially, when Mark Hunt took only 3-4 shots to the head. Frank took too many to count. Amazing!
He made one half-assed attempt at a takedown with no explosiveness and no follow through and then abandoned any attempts. No, he isn’t Dan Gable, but he should be able to get a 184 lb. kickboxer onto the ground.
It sounds like he wanted to feed his ego and stand, trade and knock Cung out. Too bad for him.

San Shou is kickboxing+wrestling and takedowns, so Cung Le had plenty of experience in that department. Also Frank’s knees are completely destroyed, and, at least according to him. he can no longer drop a level and take a shot because he no has lateral stability in his knee because his ACL is gone.

I thought this was a great fight, esp Rd3.
My new dream match is Cung Le vs Anderson Silva

Cung Le doesn’t suck like I thought he did, and I think he is a decent prospect. However, Anderson Silva would absolutely starch him inside of 5 minutes without breaking a sweat. He needs way more fights to even consider such a thought.
I’m just glad Shamrock lost he is such an arrogant cunt.

That’s hilarious.
Shamrocks obvious issues aside.
we hav’nt seen cung on the floor yet, im waiting to see him paired against a good well rounded fighter

Exactly right. I don’t think we learned anything new about Cung Le, except that his kicks are more effective than I thought they would be against someone with fairly decent stand up. His footwork is also excellent, I think coming from San Shou and having already learned how takedowns effect basic stance and footwork has paid off for him because he doesn’t have that awkwardness and off balance tilt a lot of pure muay thai guys do coming into MMA.
What is troublesome is that he has continually shown he has little in the way of knockout power. Because of the nature of the sport, a good striker has to be able to put guys away quickly when given the opportunity to land any of the countless strikes Frank allowed him to land. Soon he will be facing guys who won’t allow him 3 5 minute rounds to practice his stand up, he has to kill or be grapple fucked to a decision. That’s what sets the great striker in MMA like Chuck Liddell and Anderson Silva apart: It only takes giving up one opportunity to find yourself looking at the lights wondering wtf happened.
i’m personally disappointed w/ frank’s gameplan… On paper he has every tool to beat Cung Le EASILY but he didn’t utilize 80% of them.
