Steely, I also have a low back that is prone to pain. I’m surprised that sumo deads aggravate your back and conventional, below the knee rack pulls don’t. I find the starting position of the latter creates at least as much low back stress.

I can’t explain it either. I’m guessing it has to do with the added knee bending and bring the hips lower in the hole is just enough to make a difference. Probably not an issue if my arms were 3 inches longer versus the T-Rex arms I have now.
Well, unfortunately for me, I train like a something between a BB’er and a PL’er. I only BB Bench and Deadlift because I want to compete in a PL meet sometime soon. I don’t attribute much of my upper body growth from Benching as I really didn’t even start benching with a barbell regularly until a couple years ago. Mostly db’s, cables, and HS. My legs grow from squats, so I’d be doing them anyway.
I think I have to accept that I’m built to bench and squat, but not deadlift. How’s the Meatloaf song go-- “Two outta three ain’t bad” My deadlift is awful! LOL.
OK, so the deadlifts felt like hell again today. I’ll try to get vids up soon, the 405 goes up just fine, but very uncomfortable in the lower back. Conventional is worse, so sumo is the least of two evils.
One thing I’ve been trying to figure out is which hand to invert on the mixed grip. I usually go heavier with my right hand inverted. However, either way, when I DL sumo and I invert my grip it always feels like my body is twisted.
When I lift, the weight on the inverted side wants to stay ‘away’ from my shin and if I adjust it feels like I’m twisting, which I definitely don’t want.
It doesn’t help that I haven’t really deadlifted consistently for about a year, opting for below-knee conventional rack pulls during that time.
Maybe it’s just a matter of getting into the groove and getting the confidence in the hip/back.
I need to figure this out.
I have the same thing when I reverse my grip order. You just have to lift some more, it helped my to always go heavy wit the same grip variation… Other than that, in Finland they say that a real deadlifter has no skin on his/her shins

get vid up. I am just hazarding a guess that you might be too far away from the bar. that is the only time I ever feel sumo in my low back.
Deads vid for form check. Have at it!
That 3rd rep of the 405 set was sloppy for sure and I know I was out in front too far. Plus, my back reminded me to stop there…
Done. Wife’s van battery died. Had to go buy a new one and swap out the old one in gym shorts in 3F degree weather. LOL. I never swapped out a batter so fast!
If you can keep the bar in contact with your legs on the way up(or very close), it will reduce low back stress and make it easier to pull back. I screw this up all the time. On the sumo deads it looks like the bar is a couple inches out.
I sound like a pathetic groupie, but who cares? Your form looks pretty damned tight, but I did see that the bar was further away on the last rep. Did you start your final attempt with your hips lower? Or is it just me?

I hadn’t noticed that, but yeah, I dropped my ass down. The set up wasn’t comfortable and on that 3rd rep I tried to reset but I definitely just lost tightness and form and it showed on the rep-- I know I have more in me (did more just last week), but it doesn’t take much to blow a back out. That’s the shit that bugs me because I’m already conservative with the deadlifts and I should know better.
Drove to gym in the middle of a snow/ice storm that dropped 5" of snow + sleet. Gym is at the top of a hill-- literally. Drove up my normal road and got half way before the car wouldn’t go any farther, so had to back down the hill, go across town to another more traveled road up the hill to get to the gym. LOL…
Shortish workout.

405 F.Squat feels good. I totally have another plate. I think I can eke out another rep with 405. Maybe that’s the approach I’ll take vs. hitting singles. I need to work on that ‘breath endurance’ that Maraudermeat was talking about earlier- just trying to find the sweet spot for weight.
I think I’ll try to work around 405 with these for now, maybe 5/3/1 style while I’m sorting out my deadlift.
Shoveled snow for 2 more hours today-- 'nother storm after yesterdays. Still more on the way and another biggy Friday.

What an obnoxious gym. Now I’m starting to get why so many of you guys work out in your garages.
I’m thinking the old dude was looking for excuses to feel your bis.
LOL! No, he’s actually one of the useful employees there. I asked him to just help rack the bar if I came in uneven. I told him if I lose the weight, I’m gonna lose it forward so there’s nothing anyone could really do.
He agrees that most people in the gym are idiots…
I sit the video camera on a chair on top of 2 25 lb plates and the case is in front of it. The display screen is facing out and people can see it’s on. They don’t care. One guy one time started to pick it up an move it. He said “oh, I didn’t know anyone was filming”. Good grief Charlie 'Tard!
