Has anybody had success pulling semi-sumo or “frog stance”? I’m thinking about trying this out to see if it’s more efficient for me. My super short arms make pulling conventional almost impossible because my hips have to be a mile behind the bar. I’m working on regular sumo, just need to really happen my hip and adductor mobility to get into position.
I loved doing semi-sumo a few years ago. I did it for quite a while. I was horrible at full-on sumo and semi-sumo was a stronger pull for me than conventional.

Thank you, sir! I’ll give it a shot tomorrow night when I pull and, if possible, will try and upload a video.
Why did you leave it?
I was having hip issues and stopped deadlifting altogether. Then went I went back to deadlifting I felt like I forgot how I used to do it hahha. I somehow had this kind of unique form perfected for myself and couldn’t quite do it the same. I also started getting paranoid about my hip acting up again, but I am going to start physio and I may end up going back to it if I don’t feel like it will aggravate things.
That makes perfect sense! I’ve often heard people complain about sumo deadlifting aggravating their hips. I don’t know that I’ve ever been strong enough to experience that, but I know squatting and conventional deadlifting in the same week aggravates my adductors - I approve this hypothesis.
Strengthening the hips is annoying. I’ve found box squats, belt squat marches and reverse hypers to really light them up.
Conventional pulling makes so much sense to me in terms of execution, hypertrophy, and it’s easy to teach. Unfortunately, I did not hit the genetic lottery upon birth. Damnit!
