My gym recently invested in some new equipment that forced me to switch from standing military press to seated.

I don’t mind doing the seated press, but I’ve noticed some form differences since I made the switch:
First, I tend to look nearly straight up while doing the press. I feel that I am doing this because it allows me to complete the full rep without my face getting in the way. How does this affect the lift versus the standing method?
Second, I’m using the short-flat-back bench/chair thing to sit on. Would it be more beneficial to use a flat bench with absolutely no back support? I read up on some threads that addressed back support with regards to the MP, but they were generally referencing the tall-inclined backs.
Wait… why are you forced to do them seated? What would happen if you cleaned the bar to your shoulders? Would you die? I think I would…
EDIT: Unless they lowered the ceilings

There really isn’t enough room. I lift in a community center with a small weight room. It’s currently my only feasible option.
I was using one of these a week ago. There is really no way you could do standing presses in them even if you are able to clean the weight to your shoulders. The machine is just too short.
As for the chair I use one with a back, that way I can’t really squirm around trying to get the last rep up and stop myself from blowing out my back. Plus not having to worry about that really lets me focus my attention on my shoulders which is what I want to workout.
I saw this vid of reese awhile back and tried doing seated military presses with no back and i really like how it feels. it brings the weight down a little, but i definately like it better. needless to say, i wasnt repping 265 lbs like reese is though

Ah… My original comment was being extremely sarcastic, but now it makes a little more sense.
For head position: You could still drive your head forward at the end of the movement. This would help finish the lockout. However, I think in terms of doing this for BB purposes, it won’t really matter.
For chair: The short back chairs tend to allow you to lean back, sort of like leaning back in the standing OHP. I think this is really a preference thing.
You are complicating this. Just lift the bar over your head.
Thanks! That’s what I needed to hear
