I applied a few things and I blew up 30 lbs in less than 6 months, mostly muscle.

I just want to point out to any newbies that do read this article that these numbers are unrealistic. If you read the articles on this site about maximum muscle gain per week, you’ll find that in 6 months, putting on even 16 lbs (technically most of 30 lbs) of lean tissue is pretty tough if not impossible. I know from my weight gaining experience that sometimes it seems like more of your gain is muscle than fat until you start taking progress pics and see that you have become soft.

Between November 2006 and March 2007 I went from 145 to 170…mostly muscle…yeah right. I took some pictures and realized I was lying to myself. Gained a lot of strength, but not as much muscle as I was telling myself and others. So be realistic. Count on a max of 2 lbs/month lean tissue gain. If you are gaining a lot faster than that, count on it being fat. Good luck newbs.
I would have to disagree from experience. I gained 27 pounds in 3 months. But… am I considered a newbie if I have lifted before? I had no idea what I was doing back then and it took me over a year to make the same gains as I did this time. I haven’t lifted in a few years and restarted this past June. But this time I have scoured the web and know more about bulking nutrition.

I have seen that several times. What does that mean? (“Bump…”)

But men have more testosterone and make bigger gains then women do… if your name is “Erin Shesse”… because I have made bigger gains/time than in the original post.

Immortal, since you are new to the forums, I would just point out that the date of the posts is in the red bar left hand corner above the avatar. I mention this simply becuause you may be replying to folks who haven’t been around in a long time.

Not to say that this thread isn’t gold, just that most of the posts were a year ago.

Oh, ok. Rockscar himself gave me a link to this thread while I was in another thread that I started.

Thanks though, I won’t reply anymore.

Newbies have a chance to gain more than 2 lbs a month. Your first 6-12 months of lifting, with the right nutrition yeilds more than 2 lbs a month. I’d say a potential for 5, and yes, some fat will come with it if you BULK and don’t pussyfoot it and overthink the whole thing.

AFTER this newbie growth spurt, THEN…you can apply your 2 lb rule. EVERY physique is different. Your experience is just one in the bucket.

Remember I was 34 when I bulked and at this age you have a tendancy to be able to put weight on more than when you are 17-21. That’s just me though.
I know this thread is ancient, but it just got bumped back up and it looks very helpful. Could I get some personal advice? I’ve been on Rippetoes since mid-July or so of this year, going from 165 to 175-ish. At least some of this is fat - at least 2-3 lbs worth, but I can’t see much of a physical difference. Through this time period, I’ve missed roughly 2 weeks of lifting and spent 2-3 weeks doing crappy partial squats on the Smith machine and such before being corrected.

My mom thinks this weight gain is from eating too much, and I think it’s from failing to lift for two weeks - does anyone have an idea on what it might be? Will regular lifting (3x a week, just moved on to heavier weights) correct this excess body fat without requiring cardio? Thanks - all of us FFBs know how awful it is.
