Sal's Log

If you haven’t seen it already…

Funniest. Shit. Ever.

Workout:

60 degree incline bench press: 2x4 30 lb DBs, 3x4 25 lb DBs - after the first two sets, couldn’t get the 30 lb DBs into position. Boo.

Chin-ups: 7x4, 28 lbs assistance. Ok. Resolution for the new year: UNASSISTED CHIN-UP (x5). I need to invest in a pull-up bar and some bands.

Dips: 7x4, 28 lbs assistance (ditto on the resolution)

Reverse-Grip Barbell Curls: 7x6, 30 lb BB (need to use heavier weight next time)

Metabolic Stuff (repeated 6 times):
Bear Crawls x8
Super Burpees x8
Roll over to stand up x8
Inchworm x8

Yes you do.

Workout:

Single Arm DB Rows: 5x6, 35 lb DBs
Zercher Squats: 5x6 @ 75 lbs
V-up presses: 5x7
Sprinter sit-ups: 3x24
Medicine Ball Weave-Throughs: 3x30
Jump rope: 3x100

Are the V-up presses different than just V-ups (which always kick my ass when I try them)?

They’re more like a weird push-up:

Workout:

RDL: 3x11 @ 95 lbs
Flat Bench Press: 3x10, 30 lb DBs
Bodyweight Rows: 3x10
Overhead Squats: 3x11 OLY bar
Half-Inch Worms: 3x11
DB Curls: 3x10, 15 lb DBs
Overhead tricep press: 3x12, 25 lb DB

So I was seriously considering joining a Crossfit gym - I need a way to meet people after all my friends head back to college - but 9 sessions cost $200!!! Who can afford to spend that much money??? Well, someone with a decent job - but certainly not a recent graduate. Sad, cuz I really wanted to try it.

that vibrating dumbell is something else…

Feel the urge to update this log…I’ve been following along with all the PW’s logs and been impressed, but too lazy to write in my own

I know that on this website you have to put up (videos) or shut up - the reality is I don’t own a video or camera, can’t afford one, and am too shy to tape myself at the gym. I’m also aware that only the first two reasons are legitimate excuses. Hopefully this will suffice in the meantime…it’s a bit old and hopefully where I’ll be after I get my diet back into shape:

Other updates - got a real, full time, permanent job that I love - long hours that makes training more challenging, but I still manage 4 - 5 times a week.

Current PRs:
Squat: 125x5 (did this with a PT who watched to make sure I was going to proper depth)
Deadlift: 1x165 with HORRIBLE form; 135x3 with good form
OHP: 65x5
Bench: 75x5 (haven’t done this in a while…)
Thrusters: 80x3

Sal, good to see you back and training hard. Getting a job you love in this economy was quite a feat, so congrats!

Thanks, Kimba! I think graduating early was the best decision I could have made. Now I just need an apartment in NYC!

Training:

Deadlifts: 95x1x5, 115x1x5, 135x3x5

Circuit (3x)
step ups to bench, 12x/side, 12.5 lb DBs
single arm DB Row, 30x10
Dips from bench x10
15 jumping jacks

3x
Thrusters w/ just OLY bar x8
superset w/
10 pushups

Lat pulldowns - stuck with light weight to concentrate on activating my lats (read Nate Green’s pull up article)
60x3x8

Drag 25 lb plate across floor, feet on plate, using hands to “paw” across - 3x

Sweet! you’re moving to the city! You’ll love it. Can I ask what your plans are?

Nice circuit! Good numbers on the DL. How do you pull it?

Thanks, Masch! I pull conventional - have to say, deadlift is my least favorite lift. It’s a constant battle against rounding my back.

I’ve been working in midtown for the past 4 months - and I’ve had enough of my hour+ commute. I’m planning on rooming with a friend from school - but it’s hard to find a 2 bedroom in Manhattan, in a safe area, on an entry level salary  I cannot WAIT until I’m officially a New Yorker…the suburbs are no place for a 21 year old! Apartment hunting this weekend.

Training:
5 minute warmup on bike
OHP: 1x8xOLY bar, 1x5x55, 3x5x65
BW Dips, 4x3
DB Incline Bench: 1x9x25 lb DBs, 3x6x30 lb DBs
Seated Cable Rows: 4x6x60 lbs

10x
40 jumping jacks superset w/
40 mountain climbers

Isn’t it weird to have an OHP that’s almost equivalent to my bench? I feel like I’m muscularly imbalanced or something - my shoulders are way stronger than my back or chest.

Lol @ suburbs. I live in Bklyn, does that count. I hear the UES has reasonable apts…

I’m the opposite. Love the the DL.

Nice dips! You do have a strong upper!

Yeah, you say that until you watch me at the chin-up bar…

Brooklyn def does NOT count!!! Try Connecticut! We still have traffic cops instead of lights because the town thinks they’re too ugly.

That is a strong OHP. My bench is about 20 lbs. more than my OHP, but both are weak lifts for me.

ive been avoiding my bench for the past month…but i think its probably somewhere around 80.

Friday’s training - or should I say “workout date”…explanation after:

10 minutes stairmaster

leg extensions: 3 sets of 20, 50 lbs
squats, holding 25 lb plate: 3x20
back squat: 8x95, 15x115, 8x125, 6x135, 5x145, 5x155 (PR!!!)
hack squat strip sets (these suck - never doing them again, felt them in my lower back): machine + 50 lbsx10, + 100 lbsx10, + 150 lbsx10, + 170 lbsx10 (then gradually take plates off, sets of 10, in reverse)
bodyweight walking lunges across gym and back
leg extensions: 3 sets of 15, 65 lbs
10 lunges, 17.5 lb DBs, superset w/ 10 squats, DBS overhead (3x)

10 minutes stairmaster

Basically, a trainer at my gym asked to work out with me…i guess he isn’t used to women who lift. He’s really sweet, sent me a number of texts throughout the week, and definitely pushed me to the limit. But am I interested in dating him? Don’t think so…after our workout session, he texted me that he had “the biggest crush” on me. I kinda felt like I was in middle school all over again. Also, I’m really turned off by the fact that there are spelling errors in his text msgs…and yes, I’m aware that this is a very lame turnoff! Oh well, can’t force attraction.

Makes a note of checking for spelling mistakes in future texting

waytogo on the squat PR sweat!

cheers
N

Sal, if you aren’t attracted to the guy after a gym session with him, then you never will be. Working out gets me…interested, that’s why I say that.

So all you men who are into Kimba should find out where she trains and, like, hang around. You might get lucky.

So THAT’S why my husband always wants to come train with me. And all this time I thought he really liked weightlifting…

at least someone gets lucky!
