Running and Lifting?

Im in the army and stationed in Hawaii. Ive been in the army coming on 2 and half year and have been lifting for about the two years after OSUT.

I am running into trouble because i seemed to have reached something of a size plateau, I keep getting strength gains, but size has seemed to stop. Im 6’2 and 195.
My big 3
BP - 5x 225
SQ - 5x 275
DL - 5x 185

I think that one of the big issues is that all the running we have to do is eating up my testosterone, is just some urban legend or is there fact behind this?

Im new to the forums if this type of post is against the rules, I apologize, just let me know.

If you’re running, that means you’re burning more calories. You need to eat more.

Does running do more than burn calories, and burn up your testosterone? Or is that some rumor that people in the army like to throw around.

It’s not just protein you need . Running burns calories. You need to eat more carbs.

Long distance (marathon) running can be catabolic but the amount of running you would do in the Army should be OK.

Look for high calorie vegetables like sweet potatoes or yams, squash, pumpkin, etc and eat lots of oatmeal and brown rice. These are all inexpensive but nutritious foods that provide lots of calories and will not jack your blood sugar.

Stu

To be clear, sweet potatoes own yams for breakfast (and lunch, and dinner, to be clear.) Yams are good for you but sweet potatoes are even better.

Sweet Potatoes are called yams in some locations even though they are slightly different. The Sweet Potatoes that we buy here are shipped in boxes that say yams.

As everyone has pointed out you need to eat more however also have you considered the fact that it will be very hot where you are based?you may need more water during the run aswell cos i bet every pint you drink you will be sweating two.

I would try and use some kind of protein/carbs drink before you run.How far do you run by the way?

Would it be possible for you to drink a carbs drink while running aswell to constantly feed your body?

Running doesn’t burn testosterone. It saps you of calories that could’ve gone to mass gain and testosterone production.

The army is pretty good at keeping us hydrated, as far as the carb drinks we really cant bring those with us at PT, nor when we go into the field.

we usually run about 5-7 miles every day, except thursday and we ruck about 12 miles then.

Dude, between field problems, deployments, running and rucking on a regular basis most every guy has trouble putting on mass. Just accept it as a tradeoff for being in the Army. When you become a teamleader/squadleader you will have more say in what you do for pt. Until then, suck it up and accept it for what it is. When you are in charge change it and do something different that allows you to meet your goals while still keeping your boys in shape. Good luck and enjoy it while you can. I also recommend you get to Ranger School as soon as possible…

specs arent top priority for ranger school in the 25th…My only hope is SFAS.

Thats pretty much what my team leader told me as well, because he was pretty big when he was downrange, and lost most of it when he came back. I was just hoping some of the minds here on T-Nation might have some advice.

Ill keep scanning the articles and forums. thanks
