So, how would one go about learning/playing the game? I’ve had the itch for a while to play, and theres an intramural team at my school.
Note: I have no background in neither football nor rugby, although I do play football with friends and my brothers friends. I can hold my own, to say the least.

Well, I’m planning on trying to get a feel of it before I ask to join- you know, to see how much of a bitch I am. This way, when I discover I’m an even bigger bitch than I already think, I wont embarrass myself in front of the entire team- just you fuckers around here.
If you get DirecTV, order Setanta Sports and watch the Super 14 matches. I think CSTV (College Sports TV) still show taped rugby matches too. See if that’s the kind of game you’d like to play.
I grew up watching the occasional rugby game on TV. I saw a couple of blokes kicking the ball around during my freshman club orientation and told them that I wanted in. I learned the rest from practices and watching a few of my school’s games before the coaches let me play in one.
If it’ll make you feel less self-conscious, an ex-football player tried his hand in rugby after my school shut down its football program. The first time he touched the ball in practice, he ran for an easy try… and he spiked the bloody ball. You’re supposed to press the ball down on the ground before the try is counted. Needless to say he didn’t make the same mistake and became our best player.
all you need to do is go out and practice/play with the team, thats what i did. i never played before i came to college and i went to practice the first day and have been playing ever since, and that was almost 4 yrs ago. a lot of the players are going to be in the same boat as you so dont be scared to fuck up, everyone does it. its a fairly simple game once you start playing

Being from New Zealand Rugby is the number one sport its a game where you need quite alot of fitness because your a basically running the whole time with a lot of sprinting also, So i would say do a bit running to get ready but dont go over the top with it like idiots do in new zealand and run maraton to get ready because you never run at that slower pase. Finally take a few harden up pills because theres no padding to be worn.
rr, check out mediazone.com/rugby you can buy matches for pretty cheap and watch them on your computer (either streamed or downloaded). Your best bet really is to just go out and join the team. I’d never even touched a rugby ball before my first practice, and was thrown into my first match a couple weeks later. It’s intimidating at first, but you pick it up pretty quickly.
Where in CT are you? I play for Providence Rugby and I know there’s men’s club teams in Hartford, New Haven, New London, and Springfield, MA. They almost always play saturday afternoons. Our season starts this saturday (if you’re near RI and want to check it out, the match is 1pm at Goddard Park in Warwick.)
Just go to the team’s practice and get involved, the more you play and the more you watch games live, with people that can explain things to you the quicker you will pick it up. It is a great sport, so just get into it and you will be hooked.

buy some cleats as said and a gum shield turn up… hoe big/ fast/ strong/ good hands/ cv performance/ good feet do you have…
if you were to play ameian football where would you play. have you played soccer you any good with the fitness side of things [/quote]
I’m 5’8 sitting around 195 right now. I’m cutting and aiming for a lean 180-185. I’m pretty fast and pretty agile. Yes, I’m decently strong. 235 bench, 325 squat, 325 dead and yes I have good hands.
I didnt do any cardio over the winter while I bulked, which between that, and a 25lb weight gain… really bit me in the ass. I’m workin on that, though.
If I were to play american football, I’d probbaly be a running back or tight end.

You’re a back. Probably a centre, possibly a fullback if you know how to kick.
There really is no substitute to playing to get a feel. Rugby is THE ultimate team sport. If you trust your mates and pull together, you can beat anyone. If one link in the chain collapses, you’re lost. The coach has only moderate input once the game is going (through substitutes, yelling and at halftime) This is why leadership on the pitch is so important.
The history of rugby is littered with upsets by the little guys. God, I love it!
