Rowing

Hey

I’m 26 and I am interested in rowing/kayaking. Does anybody here practice that? Can you spare a few good tips on equipment etc?

I used to row, recreationally. Best bet is to find a club and use their equipment until you decide what you like. Also, if you haven’t rowed before, it’s easier to start with an eight or a quad before you move on to singles.

Click on clubs, and find one that suits you.

As was said, find a club. A C2 (Concept 2 Rowing Ergometer) is a good purchase for off-season fitness if you find once you’ve committed to the sport. It makes a darn good interval training machine apart from the sport, too.

If you live in a cold state, especially if you will be starting rowing in the spring, invest in warm clothing. Don’t buy anything that’s loose on your legs; basketball shorts, especially, have an irritating way of getting caught in the slide. Skintight, multi-layer cold-weather running gear is the way to go if you have the money for it. For the warmer seasons, good rowers just wear short enough shorts with speedos underneath. No long shirts, obviously.
