I am diabetic, this pic is back when I got my first insulin pump in 2008. It just really bothers me when I can’t control it better and it REALLY bothers me when it stops me from doing something.

Hi Ronda
My niece has a pump too. Did you have less scary highs and lows when you became an adult compared to when you were still growing?
That’s if you were a kid when you were diagnosed.

I was diagnosed when I was 16 and I didn’t get a pump until about 12 years later. I rarely have “scary highs” and when I do they are easily treated with insulin, water and exercise. Lows however, that is a different story. I had many lows before the pump that required medical intervention and since the pump, while I still have some scary lows, I haven’t had an unexpected hospital visits, yay!
What I find has helped me the best is my Dexcom continuous glucose monitor. It lets me know when my BG is starting to get or get low and it allows me to treat the problem early on. Obviously I don’t pay enough attention in the gym to my monitor ![]()
I wish I could be more help.

^this dog is seriously cool.
Anyways, got a meet coming up huh?
What meet, and when?

My niece was diagnosed at four and is almost 11 now, I know my sister has some sort of monitor thingy because it has gone off in the night when everyone was sleeping. I think it’s the whole growing thing that causes some of those scary highs and lows.
And yeah my niece likes to participate in sports and gets grumpy when the diabetes gets in her way. lol She definitely likes the pump too. They got here on it(the pump) as soon as all her insulin producing cells had died(can’t remember the name).
Meet Prep, 2 weeks out
Deadlift 1x10xBW, 1x10x95, 1x8x135, 1x5x155, 1x3x185, 1x2x205, 1x1x225, 1x1x255, 1x0x275 :(, 1x1x265 ![]()
Bench Press 1x10x45, 1x10x65, 1x5x95, 1x3x115, 1x1x135, 1x1x155, 1x1x165, 1x1x170, 1x1x170 yay!
A little bummed about the DL as 275 didn’t even budge off the ground, and tried 3 times. I went down the 265 and it really took all I had. I don’t know how my max managed to decreased but I always seems to surpass the odds, even if I surpass them going the wrong way ![]()
I am however happy about my bench
It would seem the key to 170 for me is a long rest period, like a week. I pased on 135 and 155 but I didn’t feel like I could manage it on 165 and definently not on 170. I am just really happy I managed 2 singles at 170, yay!!!
170! nice!
From when you started benching to now How much have you added to the bar and how long did it take to get to where you are now?

It is hard to say as I have had some injuries and I was sandbagging. When I had first ever tested my 1 rep max, in 2008, I had only been liftin for 5 months and I was at 95 lbs. Then I got stuck there for a while. Then in 2009 I hit 135 and I was doing 5x5x135 by 2010 and I hit 155 a few times. Then there were shoulder injuries which screwed me up. I started 5,3,1 this past April and by the end of 2011 I had a string of PRs where I made it back through to 165 and I have been struggling with 170 ever since.
All that doesn’t really answer your question though. I would say it was not a steady progression but a few expedited PR rushes…

No that’s an answer. I stalled at 95 for a while too but I feel like I’m starting to move again, I’d say it’s a technique thing for me.
Thanks
Glad to hear your bench is getting back up there. 170 is impressive. My best was 70kg (154lbs).
I found 5x5 helped my bench more than 5/3/1 but I’ve also been dogged by injury (I ruined my rotator cuff when I was 24 and it still gets pissy 20 years later). I’m just back to benching again after a long break and am being really careful about technique. If I don’t pull the bar apart, my shoulder lets me know.
