Road to Strongman

Today I hit two new PR’s.

215 on the Bench for 1 Rep.
145 on Push Presses for 2 reps.

I ate a 10 inch pizza today. The first pizza I’ve had in about 2 years. It was shrimp, chicken, onions, goat cheese and red peppers with chili. It was awesome. I ate a giant container of pistachio pudding. I’ve upped my carbs by about 100 a day. I’m doing pullups now with a 20 pound weight with my feet so that is an improvement.

I want to try for 235 on squats tomorrow but it really depends how my knees and glutes are feeling. If my warm-up feels good and my knees are feeling good then I’ll go for it. We shall see. I found some kegs, I’m going to try and buy them soon, maybe some sandbags too.

I took some pictures but I was just completely pissed off. I’m still thinking about posting them. Basically I’ve got nothing that needs to be in a picture, when I have some muscle I’ll post some pictures. My shins are scabbed up from the deadlifting so I’m pretty proud of that. Every time I think about the strength and power I want I just start eating. I will compete but right now I need to eat and rest, size and strength will come, I’ll be patient.

Tomorrow is another day off from work and then I’ll be back at work on Thursday. Tomorrow will be a tough workout, I need to really focus on that goal. Strongman 2008. I’m gonna go watch some strongman videos to get focused.

Stay tuned.

I dont usually max on squats, but I usually go up to 405 lbs and do 3-4 sets at 4-6 reps. And like the others, thats “raw”.

Anyone here doing the KC show in March?

You might want to take a look at your depth on those. Either record it or have someone who you KNOW will actually tell you the truth tell you how deep you’re going. I say this because 405 for six reps is going to put your max squat significantly higher than your max deadlift.

On the other hand, you may be built for squatting, or you might have just trained it really hard. If they’re of depth, that’s a pretty damn good squat.[/quote]

No you are right, those are more like “seated” squats. Sense I am focusing on deadlifts and cleans, I put more emphasis on leg presses than squats. I know how important squats are and do plan to do more “full” squats once I cut down on my deadlifts. Thanks for clearing that up.

Short workout today that more for some mental satisfaction than anything else.

Did some inclines, push presses, sumo deadlifts, squats and step-ups.

I was pretty happy I hit 235 on the squat for 1 rep and I sumo deadlifted 250 for 1 rep. I think I had more than 235 in me but I was so happy that I went all the way down and it was an easy rep.

I just ate a big jar of pistachio pudding again. God it was good. If you’ve never had pistachio Jell-O pudding just try it with some Metabolic Drive it’s pretty good.

Been working on cleans alot lately, I read that article on this website by Hendrick I believe, 12 steps to the perfect clean. Can anybody give me any more videos, advice, tips, websites, article or anything that can help me learn the clean more efficiently? Any advice would help.

So far on this journey of eating and lifting heavy this is what I have observed. I am hungrier now than when I was lifting light weight. I sweat alot more in the gym. I’m sleeping better. The strength is carrying over in other aspects of my life, better grip, better coordination better connection to my muscles. The toughest for me is bench pressing, I’m getting stronger but it is the slowest place that I’m making progess. Deadlifting is my favorite just because it is the most basic movement of picking heavy shit up off the floor. Squats are challenging for me because I want to do them perfectly but they are fun, especially front squats and overhead squats.

The best part about the whole thing is that I finally feel like I’m taking up more space and I feel once heavy stuff becoming lighter and lighter. The best example was on Tuesday when I was benching. I got under 185 and just 3 weeks ago I could only do 1 maybe 2 reps. I warmed up a little bit and I was ready to do 1 or 2 reps just to see if it had gotten easier, I was thinking hey maybe I’ll get three reps? I unracked the bar and started doing reps and before I knew it I was at five and I had more in the tank but I stopped because I knew I should stay fresh. Just unracking it felt effortless and that’s why I eat, and go to the gym everyday, for that one moment where you just hit the groove.

I wanted somebody to spot me when I tried 235 today just in case I couldn’t get it and when I unracked it, I took two steps back and set up. The best for me is when you go all the way down and others are doing 1/4 squats and they just have no clue. Yeah you can “squat” 315 a 1/4 of the way, good job, tighten that belt and throw chalk around and then bend your knees a little bit. I’m really just happy I found T-Nation and a bunch of people that understand that calf raises with 400 pounds on a smith machine and a bandana doesn’t make you strong.

So I’ll keep training, I already have hairless patches all over my shins, and I’ll keep doing exercises that make others come up and ask me what I’m doing and I’ll keep squatting so low that people stare because honestly I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Sorry for the long post but hopefully it’ll motivate you. If your on this sight and your in this thread than your ahead of a lot of people lifting, everybody here has given really good advice and has made me a better lifter.

Keep the advice coming and keep lifting heavy,

-Hawk

Nice work bro and your not happy with your banch Hell IMO its your best lift and you went froma 1 maybe to rep to 5 with some in the tank.

I mean look at the comparison, squat 235 x 1, sumo DL 250 x 1, bench 185 x 5 its your best lift by far need to bring thiose legs UP brother keep working and hey sure the bench is neat but has little carryover to strongman.

Keep it up.

I’m set for the monsters show. There are 26 guys in the hw class, so it’s gonna be rough. I’m gonna get my ass kicked in the dead and the log, but everything else I should be able to compete. I hope to finish in the top 7.

Monopoly

RE Upper

-45lb Seated DB Millitaries: 1x14, 1x9, 1x7
-Standing skullcrushers: 1x10x65lbs, 1x10x85lbs, 1x8x85
-4x8x135lb Clean Pulls
-DB Hammer curls: 1x10x40, 1x8x40, 1x8x35
-Standing Laterals: 1x10x30lbs, 1x10x35, 1x8x35
-3x thru ab-circut: 50 lb side bends (15reps), 15 Hanging leg raises, 15x90lb standing pulley crunches

I hate RE day; seriously, I love grinding out those big coumpound lifts more than anything (besides playing around with event training). Unfortunatley, I can’t lift heavy weights all the time :(. Today’s session went fast and wasn’t the best session in the gym ever, but it wasn’t too bad.

DAMN 26 I thought I had a lot in the Iowa meet in the 265 class.

Nice to see and I am going to try and make it as a spectator. Kick some A$$ man.

Hit the gym hard today, new max on clean w/ push-press, 200 lbs.(raw) Squatted 315 lbs.(raw) today, pretty happy about that. Had alittle bit more in me, but did not want to push it to hard cause I did not have a spotter. Thats my update for the day. Take care.

Jan 5/07 Event training

-2x88 ft trip, 2x66ft w/ backpack weighing 87.5lbs, carried zercher style
-4x4x70lb backpack clean and press

Ah yes, what you and a backpack can do. I was really suprised that less than 100lbs could feel so heavy after such a short period of time. I caught breif glimpses of the WSM2006 event in the medley where they carried an atlas stone and this basically inspired today’s training.

What did you use to add weight to the backpack?

I used plates and cement weights (hence why I knew exactly what weight I was using). They dug nicely into my arms =D.

LOL thou art a wise one young strong man trainer. Hence the hard work and consistyant progression. Thou shalt traverse many an obstacle on thine way to greatness.

Keep up the good work bro

Can anybody explain to me a proper clean? Am I supposed to pull at all or is the force of my upward movement supposed to just flip the bar up? Any advice/tips, etc?

Just moving to first shift today for about 2 months. This is about the time I’m used to going to bed from 4th.
