I have a 16 week off season phase (if i can call it an off season and have a clue what im doing)
I have 3 week block now before a forced deload for half term and 2 kids keeping me on my toes
This 3 week block is going to be a 3 day combination of 531 FSL no direct benching and using benching more as an accessory movment, see how i feel its going may become a full body template from 531 might be a better offering however wasnt sure of the fatigue level after 2-3 main lifts would work well with adding in hard conditioning directly after and then moving into one of the 531 strongman versions written my Aaron Moody or Chase (still undecided) which is 3 weeks 1 deload x 4 (12 weeks) favouring Aaron Moody version currently
Currently being so far out from comp im training in a commercial gym however i do own sandbags and farmers handles in my garage gym. And every so often make a midweek trip to a gym in the city to change things up, mainly on press day
I have actually planned a visit tomorrow and might have a play around with the barbell for 5s pro, the first set of 5x5 BBS FSL with a log and final 5x5 BBS FSL with the axle
Tuesday Session: Air Dyne for 20-30 minutes with some mobility work
Well here in england its like a summers day so sitting in the local gym wasnt appealing to me! Stuck my pods in opened up my audbile and listened to Chapter 13 of The Brave Athlete and went for a walk across the trial paths
Finished with a 6 exercise selection from Pavels Relax into Stretch
Dead Hang, Chest Opener, Improved Cobra, Hip Flexor Lunge, Hamstring Stretch and Calf Stretch
I forgot to mention stats so i guess its better late then never
Age: 37
Height: 6ft (181cm)
Weight: 79.3kg (aiming to get to 83-85kg for comp)
Recently returning from a lower back injury and a block in which i havent OHP for a while so im hoping to regain some progress in both the deadlift and press during this phase
Lift - Max - TM%
Press - 62.5kg x 3 (68.5) - 61.8 @ 85%
SSB - 130kg x 3 (142.5) - 121 @ 85%
Deadlift - 170kg x 3 (185) - 157.5 @ 85%
Bench - 100kg x 3 (110) - 92.5 @ 85%
Advice from all is more then welcome this is my first run at doing anything like this
Background:
Youth: rugby and football, wish i was better at rugby but football offered me a little money along the way so strength training exsisted but sporadically at best
Early 30s: found running after football finished and some target times for 5K and 10K races, achieved those targets 18:21 and 37:58 got injured, overuse, totally lost the love for it and found strength training
Mid 30s to Now: Linear Progression training, found Tactical Barbell and have ran 531 BBB Beefcake since, went back into TB whilst doing some BJJ
Always been a sideline superfan of strongman on tele and thought why not! Im more functional strength if you wanna call it that and fitness then bodybuilding etc, during my Tactixal Barbell days i preffered loadihg up carries, swings, TGU etc
Active lifestyle and job, lump around 1-1.5 tonnes daily, walk around 16000-22000 steps a day so struggling to gain weight even eating at 3600 calories its very slow
Before i turn 40 i have a list of targets id love to achieve:
LOL, those are some tough disciplines to blend together. Then again the current worlds strongest man did triathlons and ran marathons.
On your pressing setup I hope you can get some good touches in on a real log. I’ve had little carryover on a football bar on the clean or the press. Log is just a bar you really have to spend time with to get used to.
Since you mentioned a home gym, you can also make an axel pretty cheap. If not, you could add a second set of fat grips to the middle of the bar so it racks the same.
You are doing a full log and axle 5/3/1 on the same day?
I have access to a strongman gym upto 3 times per week after the school half term thankfully and have used a log a few times in the past, strangely i feel more comfortable pressing a log then barbell. Bizzare! Cant count for a max lift on it mind
I used an “axle” clean first rep only during 5s Pro
I then used half the BBS cleaning every rep as cleaning isnt something ive done a lot of and i felt the weights are light enough to not damage any gains in terms of just straight pressing! I then used a log same weight as axle for the remaning 5x5 of BBS as practise
Optimal, maybe not but it was fun regardless
But im open to adding a second press day in place of benching at all, and using a strict press day and more of a clean and press implemnt day but not with BBS on the implement day, seems a high volume to use for both pressing days
I think the marathon and ironman could be achieved in the same year to be honest, running transfers well outside of becoming biomechanically efficient in the other disciplines
If it doesnt happen before 40 it doesnt happen but we can set a target of achieving the distance, race timings are a major concern, the strongman comp however is something i want to at least be competitve in
