315 on squats has been feeling extremely light as of late. Feels good making progress on your lifts. Id say over the past 4 months my squat has gone up quite a bit, but bench has stalled and deadlift hasnt moved much.
Got a meet upcoming August 31. It will be my first meet but had a few questions for those who have competed before. Currently I’m using the Ohio power and deadlift bars and the meet will be using Texas power and deadlift bars. Is there any significant difference in feel between the two?
Also I’ve been pulling sumo to match my conventional programming with some videos above. Might be a stupid question but I’ve been debating on whether or not I should pull sumo over conventional. I’ve always pulled conventional and I think my form there is more solid but pulling the same weight sumo feels lighter to me.
Aslong as you’re using a Power and a Deadlift bar you should be alright… there may be small differences but I can’t imagine there being much. I’ve never used the Ohio bars though so I can’t say for sure.
As far as deadlifting goes, just use whatever technique feels to be you’re strongest. If you feel you can pull more Sumo, then use Sumo… and the same goes for Conventional.
Biggest tip I will give you for the day is don’t overshoot you’re openers and try to enjoy the time on the platform! Good luck for meet day
Appreciate it. I’ve set my openers to be my last warmup so nerves won’t get the best of me. All three are weights I can hit while I’m basically asleep at 5 am lol
Great points made by Andy. I’ll just add a couple of my experiences which may or may not be helpful.
I have never owned or been to a gym with a squat or deadlift barbell. I exclusively train on cheap stiff bars from local fitness stores. First time pulling off the platform felt like I was using cheat codes. I jumped my planned third pull and it still moved fast. I would not worry much about bar differences, if you come into the meet strong, you’ll have a good day.
As far as sumo vs conventional, it comes down to what can you pull the most weight with. I can pull more with sumo, but at the time of my first meet it beat the hell out of my hips. So I warmed up conventional, pulled first two attempts with a semi sumo, them hit my third “yolo” with sumo. You can always move your opener with conventional (that you’re most familiar with) then base your stance for the next two attempts off of how it felt.
Good luck at the meet! (Send me a tag with your recap if you think of it - I’m busy these days and falling behind on my logs!)
Yeah man, thanks. I’ve got to start my log up again. I’ll either post to that later tonight or tomorrow to catch up on the last week and set the stage for the rest of 2019 with my plans.
You been lifting while away from here? I had a long period where life got in the way and I forgot to keep up here but I’ve honestly made the most gains then than I’ve ever had in such a short time. You gonna hop back on 531?
Naw man, not too much - Life and such. TL;DR version - moved 2x, shoulder surgery, and just bummed about stopping/starting and stopping TRT again just dragged me away from training. Longer version in my log.
I’m going to do a HIIB program with @Frank_C starting in September. He’s coming off a couple surgeries in the last few years (one he’s actively rehabbing) and I am trying to get back into things while not destroying the shoulder I had scoped and cleaned up about a year ago.
Once that challenge is finished (the challenge is to pick ONE program and stick with it until the end of the year), I’m not sure what I’ll do. I had great strength gains on 5-3-1 and would probably jump back on some fashion of that to build some size to start the new year.
I think i have finally grasped this concept lol. I used to program hop and I have stuck with something for the past 8 months and it has paid its dividends.
We had a family get together for our nephews high school graduation come up the same day. I used my transfer insurance to move my registration to a meet on August 31. Life lol
Fair enough. Was just catchingup on the log, saw the May meet mentioned then scrolled down into dissapointment lol.
Try to take a side on video on some squats, ideally next time you test openers, nothing worse than getting called for depth on squats on your first meet.
