Rising From the Ashes (CL)

That’s true, although technically we have New Mexican food - refried beans, rice, and chile, red and green, and a host of other items. Heck, even fast food joints like Wendy’s and McDonalds offer green Chile cheese burgers. After a lifetime of that tasty cuisine though, I’m ready for a change.

I completely agree on the difference between New Mexican food and Mexican food. Green chili is good but, it does get old in a hurry.

There used to be a little truckstop in Texico that had THE BEST gas station burritos ever! It was always a surprise. They may be mild or… they may be :fire::fire::fire: But, they were always delicious.

Also down in Vado they had THE BEST chips and… it wasn’t really salsa it was buttermilk and jalapeno dip for chips. It was amazing!

Great, now I am hungry… again.

Oh @TriednTrue and @ChickenLittle, you spoiled babies. Try New England Mexican! Then you won’t be quibbling over tex-mex vs new-mex or cal-mex. You’d just be sad because it’s sweetish and not spicy, but if you ask for it hot you never know if someone is going to get all bristly and “oh no you didn’t!” and torture you by making it inedibly hot.

Texas is best, though, for the record.

Perfect description of the China Wok here. It’s very sweet but… If you ask them to make it spicier, you had better prepare yourself! It could be wonderful or it may be death.:hot_face::skull:

I agree, Texas has what ever kind of Mexican food you are craving. TexMex, Jalisco, etc… now I am thinking about barbacoa.

I like it tomato-y, and Texas brings that. Once we get into mole-type dishes, they lose me. I’m looking for gallons of tomatoey salsa with more piles of tomatoey, jalapeño-y, oniony pico de gallo to throw on my melty cheese and refrieds and rice and whatever else (after that, who cares - chicken fine, beef fine, corn/flour tortillas fine - whatever).

We have a Mexican place locally that we like to go to because it’s cute and has good drinks, but I do better to cook the food I like. My husband is from MA, but luckily he’s lived in Houston and W. Virginia and has traveled his entire work career, so he’s with me on what constitutes good Mexican.

I just wish Taco Bell would bring back the Enchirito.

I haven’t eaten at Taco Bell in years! But Taco Casa used to make a good Enchirito, probably 10 years ago.

Maybe I should try to make one? If I remember right… meat, beans, flour tortilla, red sauce, cheese, black olives… I can do this

I make my own. You can buy the Taco Bell seasoning and taco sauce. Like the real thing. A few years back I just beat a blizzard heading over Donner Pass. We pulled into the TB in Truckee. I looked at the cashier and said, “I wish you had the Enchirito still.” He made me two.

…you just missed becoming the Enchirito…

Have you read Baldacci’s 620 Man series? I liked it.

No, I have not read that… Taco Donner? It would never work.

Lol, it was a rec for @ChickenLittle…this is her thread!

I was thinking Taco Friedrich!

Ah… Certainly a couple of Michelin stars then!

I think I read the first one. It didn’t stick with me so… maybe I need to try again.

I tried Baldacci 's Calamity of Souls and had to abandon the mission. Got political right off the bat and at the time I wasn’t in the mood… lol

I have been on a Steve Hamilton- Alex Mc Night binge. I must confess, I have read them out of order :scream: I can’t find Blood is Sky and Ice Run on Libby or Cloud Library.

The new Orphan X and Cotton Malone books were released today and I am sad. I had to put my Audible account on hold for a while. :sob::sob::sob:

Sorry…

No need to apologize. My log is always open for most manner of discussions.

:joy: You’re not wrong. Any food I’ve eaten that’s billed as Mexican but served north of whatever latitude New Mexico’s northern border sits at and east of Texas has been, shall we say, lackluster. Conversely, other areas of the country have cuisine that’s not even available here, so I think it evens out.

The intro blurb set off all kinds of alarm bells!!

Ouch! The 3rd book was going so good, and then the villain(s) came straight out of a Demented Joe speech…argh LOL.

I definitely am not aligned with Baldacci’s political bias, but I think he has decent action plots and throws in a good twist or two.
