I just finished my biology lecture and was heading to the gym. It was monday so that means it was quads day, which meant squats and oh boy I love squats. So, I’m all pumped to go to the gym. I finally get to the gym and I start off with some warm up sets and stuff.
Do a warm up set with 135. Goes fine.
Do a warm upset with 225. Goes fine.
I load the bar to do a warm up set with 275. I get under the bar and it feels just fine. I lower myself all the way down and at the bottom, I feel my boxers tear right down the middle. I thought to myself maybe I was imagining it and so I do another rep and this time I feel it rip even more…I checked the mirror and made sure that at least my sweatpants didn’t rip.
Anyways, this has never happened to me before while squatting (or any other exercise). I had the same depth as always and it was not as if I had never squatted 275 before so I honestly don’t know why it ripped. So has this experience or anything similar happened to anyone else?
Dude, the same thing happened to me last monday. First time it ever happened. I was cranking out a 20 rep set and then it happened. I thought my sweatpants had ripped but I found out it was my underwear 20 minutes later. My buddies were like “hahahaha!!!” because it was so loud.

I ripped my pants from ass to crotch one time before a wrestling match. When the trainer girls noticed me walking with my back against the wall I had to explain it. They gave me some tape and I made a little patch (on the inside).

You guys wear some tight undies.
I suppose they could try thongs.
I squat in those all the time. Haven’t torn one yet.
This just made me cringe. I’m not sure why because my bikinis morph into a thong once I get my squat suit on.
Here’s a question for anyone who can answer it: Why can you not where a thong in competition according to IPF rules?
BE Girl - does it add major poundage to your lifts? I find it a weird rule.[/quote]
I thought you could wear thongs in competition? I squat in thongs normally, but wear some thin brief-type things for competition because I don’t want to wear a thong for weigh-ins.
The thong v. the bikini - no matter what, it is crawling up your butt. Might as well have the least amount of fabric possible up there.
I know you can’t lift in anything with legs. My friend had to go commando for a meet because the only underwear she had were boy shorts, and the ref doing the weigh-ins said they might be objectionable.

I’ve heard the thong thing from a couple of guys. Maybe it only applies to men because, let’s face it, thongs on men are not the way to go. Perhaps it’s a fashion call.
Good point about minimal fabric in your ass crack. I hadn’t thought about it that way. However, we all train in a barn and change in front of each other. The last thing I need to be showing some teenage boys is my ass in a thong. It’ll have to be bikinis for now.
