Hey Meat:

Great MP! I have been stuck on 205, for the longest and have really stalled. and am pretty frustrated, is there anything I could do (besides get stronger lol) with regards to foot placement, or grip that may facilitate breakthrough of breaking this weight?

Thanks bro,

Matty

Thanks bro,

Matty[/quote]

i’ll walk you through exactly what i do when i press.

i first set my hands on the bar. as i’ve gotten stronger, i’ve found that i needed a better way to support the weight in the bottom as i step out and in between reps. i’ve slowly moved my grip in and now i have my thumbs on the smooth part of the bar. it’s a very big contrast from what i do when i bench. i take my grip all the way out to the legal limit. i find that with overhead pressing the closer the grip, the easier it is to get my elbows tucked under the bar and as a result the weight is supported very comfortably.

when i set my hands i use a thumbless grip and am sure to keep the bar on the outside edge of my palm. i don’t let it roll back towards my fingers. if you allow the bar to roll back towards the fingers the weight is no longer centered over the forearms and therefore have poor leverage.

after my hands are set and my elbows are under the bar, i take a big air in my belly and step out with the weight. i take a shoulder width stance and lean back and really arch my back pushing my chest out.

i then press up almost like i’m doing an incline press. i hold my breath for as many reps as i can. i find that once you let your air out, you lose most of your tightness and most of your leverage.

i find that pressing to the front works best for me because i have a strong chest. one of my training partners is strongest pressing over his head and ducking his head through. in that regard, it’s personal preference.

i’ve found that training the entire shoulder has increased my overhead pressing greatly. i always follow up my military pressing with neutral grip pressing to hit the medial head and then i finish with dumbell cleans, face pulls, upright rows, ect. to hit the rear delts.

hopefully this helps.

Thanks alot Meat, I appreciate this, I definitely feel that possibly my grip was too wide, this is why I couldnt use my lats as a shelf so to speak. I was keeping a close eye on where you had the bar with regards to your palms in your vid. It makes plenty of sense not letting the bar fall back towards the fingers might even be painfull. I Also feel stronger pressing to the front instead of overhead, but for some reason when I am struggling I go straight over head.

I will so MPs tomorrow and will follow your cues, thanks man.

BTW WTF is wrong with youtube lately, I have been having the same issues with the links, they dont embed on this site for some reason.

Thanks again!

Hey Meat,

Following your advice, I hit a PR with 210x2, especially pressing to the front more than directly overhead. Thanks again.

happy to help my friend.

bench’n against chains- this cycle i’m doing touch and go with no liftoff and no supportive gear at all. that means no belt and no wrist wraps. i worked up to a comfortable 385 + 100lbs of chain.

also… i finally moved into the 21st century by buying a smart phone. i typically video my lifts on a flipvideo and then download them on my pc. my new phone downloads straight to youtube. unfortunately it videoed sideways and i can’t figure how to fix it. anyone have an idea how to fix it. i have the Inspire 4G HTC phone with android.

bench against chains- all weights have 100lbs of chain added - no liftoff, totally RAWWWWW!!!

0x10
135x6
185x4
225x4
275x4
315x2
365x1
385x1
135x4
225x4
315x2
385x1

pin presses- midpoint of ROM - these are freak’n hard
405x3
455x3

titan close grip bench- paused, no liftoff
315x4
365x4
405x4

elbow’s out
50’s x 10
70’s x 10
90’s x 10

solid session tonight.

“light” dead day- used the jump stretch platform for the first time. the way we set up the bands put a ton of tension on the bar. it hit like a ton of bricks… i liked it.

trap bar deads
245x4
335x4
425x2
515x1

“speed” deades against bands

135x3
185x3
235x3
285x3
305x3x6

that’s it but was plenty.
