Oh, and if you guys are to try GMs with that cambered bar - beware! It kicks major ass.
My gym has one and when I decided to test it for GMs some months ago by slamming a 45 on each side, I felt like all my insides were going to roll out of my stomach and explode! Insane pressure on the posterior chain and because the weight is way more down than a normal barbell it really drags you down and you have to put serious effort to stay tight and bring yourself back up.
I’d venture a guess that it would be an awesome accessory for deads, exactly because all the weight is kind of infront and below you, so it simulates the pressure from Deads better. I, however, chickened out from that experience and haven’t tried them again since hahaha. Between deads, squats, Power Squat Machine, Rows every week, my low back takes enough beating.
YEa, ill be amazed when my Gym throws some WD40 on their equipment. i dont expect to be receiving any new bars anytime soon. Lol last time these fuckers had a surplus, they wernt and bought new bigger, flatscreen tvs for the fatasses that hang out on the treadmills for several hrs at a time…

If my gym’s TVs didn’t cost more than their equipment, why the hell would I go there? It’s a no judgement zone goddamnit! I can’t be missing the 675th episode of The Bold and THe Beautiful just 'cause of some exercising you silly goose!
Just to report in that your advice about 4-board bench was spot on! Ive been doing these heavy for singles/doubles over the last 2 months and have them up to 330 lbs now without much of a sweat(and i never max out on these). Just tried 275 lbs Full bench this past week and the weight i was stuck around for 2 months prior, just felt like a feather this time. I def had another 10-15 lbs in me. Will stick with this and high-rep dumbbell / bench work for hte lower portion of the lift. I see 315 within the next couple of months.
Also, I’ve incorporated Speed deads with chains for singles-doubles and lotsa sets, really practicing my form on the Dead. This week i did 425x1 and it felt like a warmup, and two months ago i struggled with 420. My lift-off is definitely faster and more explosive and I’m using my Legs way more than before. Thank you sir - these are coming up so nicely that i can def feel a 500 lbs by summer if everything goes as planned.
So, advice to everyone - listen to what the big guy tells you! I’ve been working 60-70hrs weeks over the last couple of months and all my lifts are still going up at an alarming rate, while my technique is getting mroe and more polished! Meat knows his shit!
i’m glad to hear things are progressing for you.
if you can get a piece of foam i would suggest doing some foam presses as a warmup leading to your working sets. they are an awesome movement.

recently the Gold’s gym i’ve trained at for four years closed. the owner opened a new one a few miles away in a better part of town. the old one was okay in that i was allowed to build a deadlifting platform and chalk was allowed. when the new “gym” opened there wasn’t an open floor space to even put a bar on to deadlift but there were four huge flat screen tv’s in the weight room…wtf?? who needs to watch tv while lifting weights??

i can answer that question: In my gym, they play really retarded, homoerotic music. One of the songs on their playlists is the absolute pinnacle of stupidity. it “sings” during the song- “Clap your hands if you’re working too hard.” One time, i saw one of the few people in their without an ipod, not a bead of sweat on this man FYi, Look up and start clapping away with the song. OOoh i wanted to Frisbee a 45 at him.
But yea, THAT type of person needs the tv. Id assume more wouldve clapped if they all didnt have ipods in.
swiss bar- i’m still a little wobbly with this bar. i may need to start wrapping my wrists on the heavy sets.
0 x 10
110 x 4
150 x 4
200 x 2
240 x 1
300 x 1 + 10lb PR- had a hard time locking out because the bar was wobbling in my hands. i pulled something around the sternum area holding that weight over my head forever. i dropped to do some reps and it was uncomfortable so i shut it down after the first set.

^did you have a SWOLEGASM?
Thats the only way to get teh gurlz.
Great work as always Meat
i had multiple swolegasms. they definitely were not as intense as if i had used a hammmerzzz strength machine though. i really miss using them to hang my belt and wraps on. somehow though, life has still moved forward.
deads- had an awesome night!!! this is only the second time pulling conventional from the floor since switching from sumo. i’m very happy with my progress on these. i’m down in the 240’s now and conventional is very comfortable now.
dead warmup
135x4
225x4
315x4
405x4
working sets- against chains
495 + 100lbs of chain x 1
565 + 130lbs of chain x 1 (should have added 5 mor lbs to make it an even 700 at the top)
deficit deadlifts
315 + 100lbs of chain x 1
405 + 100lbs of chain x 1
455 + 100lbs of chain x 1
500 + 100lbs of chain x 1- this set felt awesome. these are just what i need to get my speed up off the floor.
GHR’s
BW x 8 x 3- really trying to work on slowing down the eccentric portion of these. it’s hard.
LiquidMercury wrote:
Meat, I’ve always wondered how Deficit Deads help in relation to regular pulls? Do they help you off the floor?
they definitely help your initial pull. it teaches you to initiate the pull with the lower body. once you go back to pulling from your regular starting position it almost feels like cheating. just be very careful with deficit pulls. keep the deficit at a point where you don’t start with the lower back rounded. start light and progress slowly keeping your form perfect. i see too many people doing basically a stiff legged deadlift.

Thanks for the input/advice. I’ll definitely have to work these in. Do you use them as a ME effort or more for accessory type work? Also what are your thoughts on Yoke bars/cambered bars? I’m looking at purchasing one or the other (all I can afford right now) and was wondering which you think would be the better purchase.

i’ve been using them as a second movement right after my ME movmeent. I could easily see them as my main movement though.
if i had to choose one i would go with the cambered bar. it’s more comfortable to me and i feel it will help my deadlift more than the yoke.
a word to the wise- i had let my protein intake lapse some and i really started to pay for it. last week i had a really good deadlift session and then later in the week i had my bench session. since my protein intake was lacking, i never recovered from the deadlift session and my bench session sucked royally. i was literally stapled to the bench on my last set. all of my warmup sets leading to that one was slow and i felt weak. after being stapled i knew i needed to get back on track with my diet. since then i’ve been getting in at least 2 grams per pound of bodyweight. i went in today and smoked that weight like it was nothing.
moral of the story… diet is just as important as the training.
bench day-
warmup- foam press
135x10
225x10
315x10
405x5
working sets- bench against chains
225 + 100lbs of chain x 1
275 + 100lbs of chain x 1
315 + 100lbs of chain x 1
365 + 100lbs of chain x 1
405 + 130lbs of chain x 1 + 30lb PR of chain
close grip bench- to foam, paused, feet up
225x10
315x10

My gym also has a row of huge flat screen TV’s. People just sit on their machines, gazing up at vapid morning shows while they pump out slow motion reps. The worst part, though, is that they’re visible from EVERY piece of equipment in the weight area. That means that if I’m lying on a bench, trying to press a 1RM, I have at least one TV in my field of vision. Scary.
Great log, btw, Meat. Your new gym seems like a much better fit for you.
Meat, the swiss bar you’re using, is that the New York Barbells mega tricep bar, or something else? It looks different from most other swiss bars I’ve seen.

it’s sad that gyms feel the need to entertain people while they lift. if your workout can’t keep your attention then you should just go home.
it’s a MUCH better fit. i don’t think i could go back to a commercial gym at this point.
