Riding the Line Between BBing & PLing

The pull looked like you weren’t straining too hard.

I’d flatten out the back (too rounded) at the start, and watch the hyperextension at the top. You want to hit vertical but not cross it.

Possibly hips just a tad lower at the start. “Chest up” cue should help with the back.

Yeah after watching it the first time i had the same feeling dingo. Im glad i recorded this, cause i had no idea how my lift looked beforehand. I think i was in perfect position about a second before i initiated hte lift - then my hips shot up and were too high at the beginning of the lift - if i bring htem in a little lower maybe ill be able to pull htem through much faster and thus finish the lift. I don’t think i hyperextended at the top - rather, i think i was late with moving my hips in (if you know what i mean) to complete the lift - and that’s because they were too high from the beginning. I dunno…

And yeah - that was surprisingly easy considering i had barely gotten 415 about a month before thath. I honestly think if i do a little tweak here and there i’m good for at least 430-450 but we’ll see. Thanks for hte feedback - much appreciated. Let’s see see what meat says. Or he’ll just come in and post another 1500 lbs squat vid and put us all to shame :frowning:

here’s some advice i gave a friend over in the “over 35” forum. i think it’s appropriate for you as well.

I’ve seen people roll the bar back into their shins like you are doing but you have to be careful doing that. it appears to be putting your shoulders in front of the bar when starting the lift. with you already in that position, the hips fly up fast and the back rounds.

your issue is that you aren’t affectively using the lower body to start the lift. your hips are flying up and then you are stifflegging it up…of course your back is going to round when you do that.

so… what do you need to do to fix it??

first, you need to learn to be faster off the floor. start doing some speed work with really light weight. somewhere on the southern end of 50%. you really need to learn to get the hips through A LOT faster. i mean explosive. i’m going to post a vid below this of my speed work. this is how fast i want it to be. see how my hips come to the bar right away, forcefully.

also, when you setup, experiment with your distance away from the bar. your shins shouldn’t touch the bar until you actually get into the down position. once you find that position, i want you to get all your weight back on your heels and actually lift your toes up and keep them up until the bar passes your knees. you will probably fall backwards ( a lot) at first but this will teach you to not immidiately let the weight shift forward. when the weight shifts forward, your ass flys up and you go into that stiff-legged position. if you are pulling with your toes up and your bodyweight all the way back on your heels you will naturally begin in a good position. don’t worry about squatting down, you will already be there if your shins are just touching the bar, toes up and weigt on heels. from there just think about getting the hips to the bar as fast as you can.

hope this helps.

My DL’s gone up scary fast in the past few months. I’d hit 455 over the summer, then over the course of about six weeks bumped ti up to 495# working on heavy singles in October/November. Amazing how what was a PR 1-2 weeks earlier was a 2-3 rep pull.

I’m doing 5/3/1 now, repping for what looks like a 515# 1RM, I’ll see it when I believe it though.

I see your shoulders going too far back at the top. Stand up tall, chest up. That’s enough.

Some awesome advice here! Thanks a ton meat (and dingo). I guess i’ll put in some speed work (maybe every other week) and work on getting those hips through. I like the idea of putting all the weight back on the heels and lifting my toes and had actually experimented with that before but was never that comfortable with it - will stick with it more. Overall i agree that i gotta get those hips through MUCH faster and start with my wegiht consciously on my heels and thus ensuring enough leg drive to blast through the lift-off stage

Hey ‘Hoss’, wanted to say i gave Box squats a try yesterday, and i have to say i really liked em. Only got up to 365 for reps, but i plan on working with em to get that up.

what’s up slim. just be sure to do them right. most people plop down and then do the ol’ rock and roll off the box. are you doing them where you totally unload on the box or just touch and go??

keep up the good work on the dieting. you will be very happy with yourself once you step on stage. you will truely be able to call yourself a bodybuilder then.

Wide sumo stance, Slow eccentric movement, Sit down fully on the platform while being sure to extend my ass out and get that full ham stretch, wait a moment, then pop back up, keeping the weight on my heels. This is how i picked it up, great posterior chain movement. This sounding good to you?

been sick for what seems like forever so i haven’t been in the gym in a week. felt really good tonight though. decided to go in try out some of our new toys at the new gym. i did foam presses for a warmup and then used chains for the first time ever. then we finished with the neutral grip bar for accessory work. i prefer the chains over bands now. the chains allow for a much freer ROM. i feel as if the bands lock me into a set ROM much like a machine.

warmup- foam bench press

135x10
225x10
275x6
315x2
365x1
405x1
455x1
495x1

bench press with chains- approximately 40lbs of chain. unfortunately my t-rex arms didn’t have the chains unloading much at the bottom though…

225 + chains x 3 -paused
275 + chains x 2-paused
315 + chains x 1-paused
365 + chains x 1-paused
405 + chains x 1-paused - shut it down there. this is a good starting point for me with the chains.

neutral grip bar- have no idea how much this thing weighs but i’ll just say 45lbs to make it easy.

135x10
225x10
275x10
315x8

a few sets of straight arm lateral raises

that’s it.

Always wanted to try one of these. I’m assuming it’s like as long as a regular BB but with cross bars in the center to grip neutrally? (like a long triceps bar)?

How’d you like those?

yep… that’s the one. i liked it a lot. jowee was having some trouble balancing it with his dainty wrists but it’s pretty cool. definitely hits the triceps hard. i think i could go pretty heavy with these as well. three plates a side was pretty easy. i wonder how much the bar weighs though. it’s much bigger than a standard 45lb bar.

For some reason, ages ago I started reading this thread and only got through a page or two and never came back to it, big mistake. I got a lot of pages left to read but this is a great thread! thanks meat

well… my thread is pretty boring. i pretty much stick to the basics. i don’t use a lot of fancy machines.

i appreciate you reading it though.

Basic compound movements with immense poundages = boring!

Feeling TEH MUSCLEZZ with 40 lbs cable lateral raises and HAMMER STRENGTHZZ machines while also doing neuro-charge, insert-pseudo-scientific-bullshit-term-here workouts = TEH AWESOMEZ!

considering i had to give up on commercial gyms because none in the area even have one deadlift platform and most don’t even have one power rack but have every damn fancy, padded from top to bottom piece of equipment known to man, i would say my type of training is pretty unpopular.

now how’s that for a run on sentence??

Just got a rack from craigslist for 50 bucks. It is a great addition to the living room.

Pretty good one sir, pretty good…

skwatt day- still gett’n over this damn cold. was really hoping to work up to 690 on squats. warmups felt okay but i had set up issues on my 600 and 650 sets, so i decided to save it for another day. i need to back off the heavy shit for a couple weeks anyway. i’ve been push’n the squats every week for a month now. i’ll hit that 700lb squat soon though.

squats

warmup
0x10x2
150x10
240x6
330x2
420x1
510x1
600x1-stance was a bit too narrow.
650x1-pitched forward some on the way up.

lunges - front foot elevated to allow for a good stretch
some x some

seated calf raise
some x some

not a bad day but i wanted that 690lb squat today.

Meatster:

Monster numbers. You keep making it harder to catch up

So, it seems like you’re in full PL mode these days (new change to “PL gym” notwithstanding). Are you still actively watching the diet like you were some months back? Are you planning on actively mixing more of some traditional BB type training to ‘ride that line’?

Any plans to do BB shows down the road v. PL meets in the next year or so?

i’ve been pushing to see where my actual max is on the squat as of late and relearning the conventional deadlift. my training has been pretty much focused on that.

i’ve definitely been watching the diet. most mornings i’m sitting at 250 right now, down about 20lbs now. strength has been pretty good considering.

i really do need to do more high rep stuff. i do more than i actually put into my journal at times. today i did some lunges and i liked the pump it gave me. unfortunately after squatting or deadlifting close to 700lbs my body is done.

i guess i need to do a better job of “riding the line” lol…

definitely going to do a bodybuilding show in the future. i miss the whole process of preparing for it. that’s what separates the guys that go to the guy and lift weights from those that are actually bodybuilders. most people don’t have the balls to stick with it, watch themselves get smaller and do what’s needed to get to single digit bodyfat.
