Why are you lifting in a short-sleeve shirt?! My world is upside-down now aaarghhhh.
On a serious note - good pause on that board press - that’s some serious weight! Also, i like the idea to tie the boards around me with a scarf - might be more stable than what i’m currently doing (zipping them up in my hoodie).

thanks. i’m trying to push it up to 600. i’ve hit 655 touch and go off the boards but pausing is a totally different animal.
i usually have a training partner hold it but i needed him to get the video. i use a knee wrap and it works fine.

i’ve been wearing t-shirts for awhile now. my gym stopped cranking the ac and the heat is cranking now. plus i don’t use the elbow sleeves for benching anymore.
deadlifts- i’ve been having trouble with the adductor i tore a couple years ago. sumo pulling and squatting in the same week keeps it constantly sore and i’m afraid i’m going to tear it again. I’ve decided to perminently switch to conventional deads to take a lot of the stress off the adductor. i went in today to test it out. i set up the risers to about two inches below my knees. i felt some slight strain but it was definitely doeable. i’ll slowly lower the steps as the adductor starts to heal up. i worked up to 675 tonight with only slight discomfort. who knows… i may end up being stronger with conventional.
elevated conventional deads
135x8
225x6
315x4
405x4
495x2
585x2
635x1
675x1- this is a tough spot to start from and it was a grind to get it started but the lockout was strong.
i’ll stick with this height through this cycle and then slowly work my way down, keeping a close eye on the adductor.

Hello.
I started training nearly 6 months ago now… i finished the year with 400lb Squat & Dl
Here is the DL, my friend still hasn’t uploaded the Squat when he does I’ll show you. Any insight/comments welcome.
Your seriously strong so I know you know what your doing.
Happy New Year.

skwatt night- we had to lift at an alternative gym until our new one opens. the “cage” they have there is the biggest piece of shit i’ve ever seen. it’s rickety and the designer should be donkey punched. the holes to put the bar supports in are too far apart so either the bar was way too low to get under or too high. i had to go up on my toes a little to get the bar off the uprights. also, the upright are almost horizontal and really short. on my first set i actually pulled the bar off the uprights just by tugging on it a little. basically it sucked the big one. needless to say, squatting in this piece of crap was hard.

635x1- everything about this set sucked. i had the hardest time getting the bar off the uprights, then after squatting it i had to get the bar back on them.

doesn’t seem like much but i felt like i got ran over after this.

Anarchy girl approves of the sheer amount of balls displayed in that sqwatt.
Good hanging in there meet and finishing that one! Awesome effort!
Also, i feel your pain cause my “cage” at my gym has the same issue…but i always go with the lower hole 'cause i don’t wanna risk getting on my tiptoes with several hundred pounds on my back and trying to lean into crappy hooks…
the new gym finally opened tonight. what a disappointment…the weight room is really small with no place to move around. there’s also no deadlift platform or even a space to do it. the owner was there and basically said that the free weight area was the least of his concerns. he bought a whole new set of machines that do the same damn thing as the old machines that are still there. i just don’t get it. the only way it could get more pathetic is if they actually design a machine that will actually lift ALL the weight for you.
the crew will be checking out a powerlifting gym this weekend. hopefully the trip isn’t too bad. I will NEVER go back to that “gym” again.
traing tonight… not even worth writing it up.
But…meat…think about all hte HAMMERRZZZZZ curls and rows you could be doing… and HAMMERZZZ Benching 800 lbs, while still maintaining focus on the muscleezzzzz because, ya know, when you get super big and strong free weights are just too dangerous for your HOT BODzzzz
On a serious note - i’m sorry man, that is pathetic. Hopefully the new gym is not too far for ya.
Best of luck finding a new gym Meat. It really sucks that your gym went to that length, but thats the fitness industry for you. Kinda sad that real lifters make up such a small portion of the gym going population, as I think they would cater more to us, if there were simply more of us. I hope it works out for you one way or another.
i was thinking last night that the new gym looked a lot like a car dealership. when you walk in they had the new models of the machines right there highlighted. there were only 5 or so but there was a good 5 feet or so of space around each on of them for people to just stare in awe at them. they also had this really fancy paint job with plastic accents and double the padding of the old ones. These were the new cars coming out in 2011.
Then you had the old machines that did the exact same thing. they were spaced evenly apart but definitely no 5 feet of space. These are last years models with some lease vehicles mixed in.
Finally, all the way in the back, you have the free weights. The owner didn’t bother to buy and new free weight equipment. This stuff is beat to shit and packed in really tight, with no room to move around at all. These are your high mileage trade in vehicles that will probably just go to auction at some point. No one wants these anymore because they aren’t nearly as comfortable or pretty. Plus they require some sort of knowledge of repair to maintain them.

Very, very well said. We just aren’t tough anymore.

My last gym which closed last year was actually pretty decent compared to my new ones, only problem was the crowds, enough squat racks and free weights but that isn’t much help when they are all in use. When I signed up for the gym they are required to give you a “sales tour” or whatever which is fine because I’d like at least 1 walk though before signing any papers and they won’t let you go by yourself.
The worst part is they try to show you everything except the stuff you want to see. Most of the time is spent on the circuits of machines then upstairs to all the cardio equpipment. All this time I just ignore them while trying to count the squat racks which are spread out and looking around for random misc stuff I liked at my old gyms pretending I am still listening to them. Trying to ask questions is a bad idea too, makes it even longer and its never what you want to hear.
The tour is pretty painful and much like a car salesman trying to sell you something you don’t want, except for gyms you often have to settle for something less than what you are looking for these days.
Shit sucks man. Come down to NC, my base gym is pretty kick-ass, as is the Gold’s out in town (24 hrs too!). We can train together every day and be forever strong and sexy!
I’ve been lurking here still, and you’re motivating as always. Hitting a 635 squat under shitty conditions is nothing to be ashamed of man.
first day of the rest of my life…
jowee found us an underground gym to train in. it’s about 2 thousand square feet of powerlifting, MMA and strong man equipment. there’s only ten other members. it uses a keyless entry system so we can train whenever we want. i have a video of the new home.
today’s training at the new compound.
elevated deads- shin level. adductor felt great today. conventional deads are feel’n good. i’ll stick with this height for one more week and then for the next cycle i’ll lower it some.

Meat,
Congrats brother! You’ve arrived - the new gym looks AWESOME! I hope it is not too far away from your place - def a keeper.
Deadlift question for you sir. I know you’ve said you like mid-shin area elevated deadlift since that is most people’s sticking point. I lift conventional, but my sticking point is off the ground - first several inches till mid-shin. If i get it to there, i know the lockout is pretty much guaranteed. My max deadlift to date has been 415 lbs (about 2-3 weeks ago). Since then, i’ve incorporated the same idea as the 3-4 board press for my bench as your advice - i’ve started pulling heavy singles off pins below hte knees to get me used to ehavier weight - just pulled 440 this week for a not-so-hard single. My idea was to work up to ~550 lbs on these and then hope that a 450 would fly off the floor.
My question is - does this make sense or should i choose another assistance exercise? I still pull 5/3/1 off the floor but don’t max out on those - hit the prescribed reps and then move to the elevated deads. I’ve never liked deficit deads cause in my eyes they change hte mechanics of the lift at the bottom…i dunno, maybe its just me
Thanks meat and keep pushing. Monstrous deads right there
holy muscles batman! 4 tires and a log bar?

can you get me a vid of you deadlifting?? if you are failing right off the floor i feel like your starting position might not be that efficient. i would need a video of a max attempt for that. i’m going to hold off giving you any advice on lift to help this until i see it. so far though, you lifts have been really good.
the big test on the new gym will be tomorrow. it’s about 30 minutes from my house but the drive home might be tough since i’ll be going with rush hour traffic.
