Not sure if you have answered this before…if you have I apologize, but what is your take on speed work for raw powerlifting?

Hey, no problem man.
All thanks should be going to you though! ![]()
Meat,
I just spent the last hour or so reading through the pages of your thread and it was incredibly inspirational. I am excited to watch your progress and I think it is awesome how you are so willing to help others. Also, you are from Virginia, so that’s pretty cool too.

i find speed work very helpful for raw powerlifting. i throw in a cycle of speed work whenever i notice my bar speed slowing. I try to always move the bar fast through all my warmup and working sets but over time i slow down. throwing in the speed work help me to get focused again on moving the bar fast. just don’t get tempted to go too heavy on the speed work. i don’t go over 50% anymore. all reps and sets should be super fast.

that’s an hour of your life you won’t get back:)
seriously though, thanks hoss. i really appreciate you taking the time to read my log.
I’ve had to learn everything the hard way and nothing has come easy for me. I think that’s why i’m willing to help others. I wish i had had someoen to help me at times so that i didn’t make some of the huge mistakes i’ve made.
what part of VA are you in?? i’m in Northern VA. in manassas. if you are close, you are more than welcome to come train with us sometime.
thanks again.
so…today i finished my third cycle of 5/3/1. we are going to take a few days to deload and start back up next saturday. here’s the last two sessions
Bench -actual max 560, working max- 90% 500
stuck with the prescribed reps. i recently switched back to a regular grip from reverse and i’m still tweaking my form.
warmup sets
0x10
135x6
225x6
315x6
working sets
75%- 375x5
85%-425x3
95%-475x1
315x10,10,15
dumbell rows
80x20x5
abzzz
skwatts- actual max 700, working max-90% 630
through a comedy of errors we only have one lifting belt between the three of us right now. i broke the lever on my belt for the third time and am still waiting to get it back from Inzer. Jowee left his belt in the gym after deads and someone apparently stole it.(i really hope they are dumb enough to wear it to the gym). so, we are stuck right now removing the lever with a screw driver for everyone. major pain in the ass.
warmups
0x10
135x6
225x4
315x1
405x1
working sets
75%- 470x5
85%- 535x3
95%- 600x1
speed deads- i tore my adductor a few years ago and it’s acting up a bit right now. i set up for my first set but it said “NO!!!”. luckily we have our deload to rest it.
that’s it.
thanks for reading!!!
Hey man, good to see you still posting!
How’s 5/3/1 been working out for your maxes?
I love the short cycles… Work up to a PR on week 3, rest up, set new goal, repeat.
Hey MM!
I just read what you wrote in that yoke thread about reverse grip bench. I was doing them in the smith a while ago but after reading your post I think I’m going to try them with free weights (I’ve got some issues with a pec so they’ll probably be good for me). Not right now though since I’ve just started doing something else that’s new to me so I don’t want to add too much new stuff or it will be hard to evaluate, but soon.
Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your training and your thoughts as well as for being a source of inspiration.
Always informative and humbling to read Meat, keep it up my friend.

I moved from VA last summer, but my fiance lives in Fairfax and I visit her about once a month.
Hey MM, wasn’t sure where to ask you this so sorry if in the wrong place, but:
Tried the rev. grip bench you mentioned in the yoke thread and really felt it in traps/med delts, but also found it uncomfortable on the wrists.
I tried to set up in a similar manner to the way you said: bar on the heel of the hand with a wide grip etc, but still this was an issue.
Would wrist wraps alleviate the issue or do you think there’s a problem with my setup?
Thanks, you’re probably the most helpful poster on this site, I’ve learnt tonnes from reading your stuff!

hey hoss. yeah… life has been hectic as of late.
i’ve definitely gotten stronger since i started the program. i think i’m going to switch over to 5/3/1 for powerlifting. it’s funny, i was thinking of making some of the changes in the program that he did before i actually saw the new program.
my sessions are pretty short now. i get in, get out. no fluff. but it seems to be working.

the movement can be really tough on the wrists. wraps can definitely be used. i use them when i get to a moderate weight.
also, thanks for the kind words. much appreciated.

Glad to see training’s coming well man, haven’t dropped in for a while. Sucks about the belt, I love the clamp belts, but it does suck when you gotta swap out between people of different waist sizes.
Looks like you got lucky regarding timing of this deload, what with your adductor acting up. Hopefully it’ll be ready to rock come saturday.
