highlight from yesterday’s dead session- i stumbled upon a foot position that made the weight off the floor feel like nothing and my hips came through very fast. i stumbled upon it on my second set of deficit speed pulls against bands. i got a video of it so i don’t forget. Dave compared it to a sissor lift. i called it the t- rex deadlift.
anyway…here’s the vid. if anyone pulls sumo, give it a try and let me know if it works for you.
T-REX, I like it… Do you think that maybe the foot position make you keep your knees out and your hips more forward from the start? Do you feel like your sitting back more in the hole at the start as opposed to ‘hunching’ over the bar? I’ve noticed that if I pull sumo and point my toes as far towards the plates it tends to bring my hips in further from the start and I can pop off the floor with my quads. Anyways…good stuff meat.

i think a big part of it, is that the weight automatically goes on the hips to start. i don’t sit back at all actually. i feel like it’s straight up and down.
i’ve tried the “pointing the toes towards the plates” and it works for breaking the weight off the floor since you get a ton of quads into the initial pull but then i find it really hard to get the hips through to finish the lift.
the sumo is such a damn complex movement. so much has to happen with smooth transitions or it all goes to crap. if i could add about 6 inches to my t-rex arms i’d be set.

I have the same wrestling shoes. But I actually use them for wrestling. Haha.
i used wrestling shoes for wrestling as well back in the day.
What weight did you wrestle at? And how much do the wrestling shoes help you with squats and deadlifts would you say?
My wrestling weight in high school was 170 and in college i never let it go above 200.
i wear the wrestling shoes for deadlifts because they put me closer to the bar. i wear chuck’s to squat in because they have a rigid sole and i can push out against them.

Alright. I was wondering because I want to incorporate my wrestling shoes into lifting more, and I don’t really have the money to buy any other kind of shoes that I could lift it. Thanks for the tip.
I have a question. When should I do my last heavy singles before my meet? Currently I have it scheduled to do them 2 weeks out, and then deload the week prior to the meet. Does that sound like a good plan?

that sounds about right. when you say “heavy singles”, what do you mean?? i typically work up to my opener only on squat and dead. I find that dead takes care of itself- no need to even work up to an opener.

I use wendler’s 5/3/1 and was going to use that last week before the deload to see what I could get for a single instead of just repping out on the third set. Something like 175x5, 195x3, 225x1, 245x1, 265x1… for bench as an example. I hope that makes sense lol.

Oh hi, my name is MM and I press more weight in DBs over my head than most T-Nationers can BB bench, and I squat as much as your car weighs, kthxbae.
Props dude, love this shit. I’ll be attempting a 655 sumo DL in the next week or two, which will be a 10 lb PR.
thanks hoss!!! i appreciate it. be sure to video it or it didn’t happen:) deadlift is my worst lift… damn short ass arms.
so, i’ve spent the good part of my powerlifting days doing most of my pressing to the front. as a result i’ve developed some major shoulder imbalances. i’ve been working to remedy the situation. what i’ve been doing lately is splitting my shoulder work up into two separate days. i’ve been doing presses that emphasize the front delts after my bench work on mondays. then on my accessory day i’ve been doing movements that emphasize the rear and medial heads of the shoulder. as a result my shoulder issues have started to go away. on my accessory day i’ve been doing a great movement where you start the press with the bar directly above your head with the elbows out. i also press against bands for this movement. I’m also doing behind the neck presses, pausing the bar behind my neck with my elbows forced out. these two movements really work the medial head of the shoulder. this area in particular is really neglected by most people.
trap bar row- was looking for a row variation. the trap bar is always loaded up with weight for some reason. i gave it a try and really like the stretch and contraction. i like the neutral grip with this movement. i kept it light to really feel the stretch and good contraction.
2 plates x 8
4plates x 8 x 3
here’s a vid explaining what i did…
lat pull down
some x 10 x 3
cybex curl machine
some x 10 x 3
one arm concentration curls
60 x 10 x 3 - each arm
i was just reading Jim Wendler’s log and he posted a set of stats for “What constitutes Strong” I’ve decided that I’m going to throw one or more of these lifts at the end of my training sessions in an attempt to reach these numbers. Some are going to be really hard becuase they are rep sets, not a 1 rep max. Anway, here’s the lifts, weights and reps to be considered elite level strong
bench 315x20- i already have this one but in a fatigued state after my normal training, it could be tough.
Dips BW +200 x 10 - I’ve come close to this in the past, so hopefully this won’t take forever.
pullups BW+100 x 10 - this is going to be tough. i recently hit it for 1 rep, so another 9 is going take a long time.
strict overhead press- 315x1 - i think i’m not too far off on this but we’ll see.
squat and dealift 500x20- now this is going to be tough. i hate rep sets on squats and deads. this will definitely be a challenge and take some time.
barbell curl -185x10 - i don’t have any idea where i stand here. i guess i’ll find out.
^^The only one I’m even remotely close to achieving in the near future.
What’s your weight at the minute, meat? Have you had your bf tested lately as well? You originally wanted to compete in the 242lb class when you began this journey- is that still the goal?

i’m around 250. with some water manipulation i could compete in the 242’s. as for bodyfat…i’ve actually never had that tested.
