Ridiculous Gym Numbers

I actually believe that.

I’ve met many (probably 10+) 405 benchers that have never done a deadlift and “don’t do squats” because “they have bad backs.” They are in their late 20s or early 30s.

Two guys I work out “with” (as in, at the same time in the same gym) are like that, in fact. Both big and fat, but strong in the press.

One asked me what I was doing when I was setting up for DL, a couple years ago.

lots of people can claim numbers, but that is all they are, numbers. the quality of the lift is more important.

example, recently I did 6 reps with 6 plates in the squat(585). this was after 5 sets of leg curls and 5 sets of leg extensions.

pretty good, no?

well, if i posted a video of that you would not be impressed, and they were done of a high box with a ridiculously wide stance, my ROM was about 5 inches, lol.

i train now just for development, and back when i was a serious competitor, i would have laughed at someone claiming 585 for reps with similar technique.

Training in Thailand, I met numerous deadly MMA warriors telling their various tall tales. Then when I rode past the different gyms on my way to my own gym, I saw them all in the beginner rings. And if they recognised you from the bar the night before, they all looked away.

Also, yesterday I warmed up for my bench with Navy BUDs. But, like, when I got back to the gym a few weeks later it was closed. So I feel like my workout was a total failure.

I hate this one the most. You gotta work pretty hard to get rid of being “big and ripped.”

I heard a kid the other day training with his skinny ass friend saying “When I used to be ripped, I did blah blah blah.” Sure thing buddy.

Makes me think “Why’d you quit?”

In High School my track coach told us:

“When I was 16 I ran the 100 meters in 9.83 seconds and I was CUT from my High School track team.”

Most ridiculous story I’ve ever heard was some guy in a college class who was kind of nerdy and really overweight told us about his friend who played football.

“He was like 6 four and 300 pounds. ALL MUSCLE. He could bench … no wait what is the leg thing called?”

“You mean squats?” somebody said.

“Yeah he could do a thousand pounds”

I could understand some guys really believing they’re squatting to depth when they’re doing slight knee buckles to inflate their numbers, but I could never understand the guys that would do a little elbow bend and claim they were benching. How can you not admit the bar didn’t touch your chest. Do you honestly not, not-feel, that a heavy metal bar didn’t touch your chest?

I think this is similar to the thread topic: When I was in High School my football team did win the state championship. I played a very, very small part in this achievement. We were like in the lowest division in the state. Most of the guys on the team though were convinced they would be going D One especially the little guys that were 150 lbs soaking wet. I still see some of these guys and they have to bring up how they’d be professional football players now if they had been bigger. I always agree and say straight faced that if they were faster they would’ve had a better shot also. The conversation literally goes like this:

Ex-Skinny Little Dude Now Skinny-Fate Dude XYZ: Hey Sen
Sen: Hey XYZ! How’s it going?
XYZ: Goin’ pretty well. You still playin’ football?
Sen: Um…nope…haven’t played football for 20 years since High School.
XYZ: Yeah…me neither. If we’d had Brad’s size you know we’d be playing still!
Sen: Yeah…and if we were fast like Mark…man…we’d be all pro.
XYZ: Nah man…if I had been big like Brad I would have been D One! You can always get faster, but not bigger.
Sen: OK.

I’ve honestly had this conversation with 3 different people. Brad was the biggest guy on our team at like 6’1 or 2 and 220 lbs and all the little guys hated him because he ‘wasted his size’ by not working hard in the gym…like they were…

They all turn into Rain Man. How much did he squat? About a thousand pounds.

I’d like to point out that the world record raw squat is 1,000. In the super heavyweight class.

No it’s not. Your stoopid. My buddy’s brother did 1,150 in the super-duper heavyweight class in Japan.

Off topic:
What year? My team won 5A (biggest Texas division) in '99. The only guy from the team that got any NFL contract was our punter (Richmond McGee, played for UT, then eventually made it to the Bears for a minute.)

So in summary, we were the best team in TEXAS, best division, and produced 1 borderline NFL player. That says a lot.

Sens not in Texas. He just has a sense of humor.

Even further off topic.

Brady Quinn’s from my first high school. I took classes with his sister.

Football team sucked though. I was in the band.

Also, girl I was friends with in middle school became a Playboy centerfold. Tamara Witmer. Unfortunately just a friend. Not a “friend”.

First of all, you have hurt my feelings. Secondly, I have personally seen a 5’6 17 year old do that for a triple in his basement. NO CHALK

And a state champ ring fo sho !

We were in 2A…I think 3A was the biggest or maybe 4A…in the state of Maryland in 1987. The prior year we were in the bigger division so we took shit from people saying we only won because we dropped down, but eff 'em !

Here we go again…another “I was in the band” guy…admit it buddy you weren’t in the fucking band…why must everyone claim to have been in the band…as someone who really was in the band (2nd chair clarinet) I’m going to start a thread called Ridiculous Marching Band Claims and out all you lying loosers…no picture of you giving wind to a horn or pounding on a drum and you can fuck off!

Big deal. That porn start that screwed 800 dudes on film lived in my old townhouse development…she beat Houston’s previous record of 500, but you probably never heard of here because she’s african american. I can’t even remember her name although we waited for the bus together several times. Nice lady.

I worked construction for awhile and a guy I worked with said he could “Curl 600 pounds with my legs.”
I’ve never seen a hamstring curl machine go over 200.

Appropriate response

Lol. I know I have photos of me with my clarinet, and I probably have photos of me with my baritone.
