So I trained today and also had the first family holiday gathering. Now I have 4 of my 19 year old brothers friends over and they’re sitting at my kitchen table boozing with my parents. Really quite entertaining. Given I have to cut weight, I’m sitting watching the hockey game instead of drinking. I feel like such a grown up.
Gym session was kind of inspired by the session I did with Bartl in Cali:
Speed Squats
45x10x2
95x5x1
135x2x8
185x2x2
Rack Pulls from knee height
95x5x1
115x5x1
135x5x1
185x5x3
205x2x2
DB Reverse Lunges
30x8x3
Wood Chops
20x8x3
Bulgarian Split Squat Isometric Hold (supersetted with wood chops)
30sx3
I’ve started being super careful and am warming up very slowly. The last thing I need is to mess up my back 5 weeks out from Niagara…Barn tomorrow. Should be cold. Hopefully the snow holds off so I can make it there since we’re supposed to get another 6 inches.
So I woke up this morning and looked outside to see a shitton of snow on the ground and 3 cars stuck on my street. I made the executive decision that until the plow came, my car wasn’t going anywhere. As a result, I skipped training at the barn and trained at my gym instead.
After I benched, I went over to the squat rack area and two of them were taken by people squatting. The third was in use by a trainer and his client using bands to do everything from pushup/planks to bicep curls. Why in the power cage? Could you not use the smith machine? Especially when he saw me sitting there… Pissed me off.
DB Bench:
30x8x2
30x6x1
I swear the DBs at the barn that I’m using are slightly less than 30lbs because this is twice in a row at my gym that I’ve struggled with the 30s…
The benching is still super light which is awesome. Makes me happy. Squat is sooooooooooo light. And deads felt really good today. My baby hands were the only thing that hurt. I almost tore a callous off completely. I also realized why we should wear knee-high socks to deadlift after I tore the shit out of my right shin…
I was getting funny looks today by the rest of the gym, but considering I was wearing my knee wraps, it wasn’t surprising…
Also, NeelyDan… were you at the gym yesterday afternoon… there was a guy curling in the squat rack and I thought it might have been you. He used a 10 on each side and then 3 5lbers. I wonder if ‘he’ realized that he could have just thrown a quarter on… it was you, wasn’t it?

Are the dumbells a different shape? The ones I used in Mississippi were wider and hard as crap to use because of the need to balance them. I couldn’t do 3 complete sets either. I think the ones at the barn are accurate. We periodically get anal retentive and weight things.
We all laughed at what a wussy you are. The two young boys were both late because they stopped at the dollar store. Therefore everything ran late because we have to wait for the golden child to do his things.

Not really… Now that I’m using the real DBs at Bill’s and not the ones he put together for me, they’re not too far off. I don’t know… maybe it’s the fact that I don’t get rust all over my hands with these ones so it just doesn’t have the same feel hahaha.
I’m okay with you guys laughing at me. It was a shitty night here at my household as well. The entire house was up at about 2am for a few hours. When my alarm went off, I looked outside and saw the cars, I wasn’t even in the mood to try for it.
Why did they have to stop at the dollarstore? And of course you all had to wait for the golden child. I mean it’s not like he’s competing in 5 weeks and needs the extra attention…

That’s my new favorite quote and I’m sharing it with everyone I can.
I have nothing new and exciting to report because I’m waiting on SOMEONE to come up with some fun, interesting and painful training sessions for me for my inbetween days at the barn. (Yep, I just called you out )
I started and finished my Christmas shopping today… I’m such a slacker. I blame it on being on vacay in California and not really realizing Christmas was coming up so soon. It’s good though because I knew what I wanted to get everyone and so made it a quick in and out trip. It was pretty quiet…I think everyone is hiding from the cold at 8pm. I actually have two more things to get. Something for my 19 punk ass brother and something for someone else, but I know what that other thing is going to be. I feel like just getting my brother a boot so he can kick himself in the ass when he needs it… What do you get a 19 year old who’s away at college in the US most of the year?
Speaking of being away for college, this is the first time he’s been home since mid-August (he plays hockey, so no free weekends) and man oh man does my house ever feel small. It’s amazing how going from 4 to 5 people changes the whole dynamic.
Also, anyone who has gone through the process of choosing a grad school, PLEASE let me know what made you choose the school you did (assuming you had options). I have 52 days to decide where I’m going to spend the next two years of my life (not to mention a shitton of cash). I know where I’m leaning but I want to make sure I give both schools a fair go of it…

would surfing instead of living in shitty ass ghetto memphis be a good reason not to go to the “other” school?

Scholarship, better school, and living in my own apartment v. $100,000 in loans and living with my parents.
Wait, maybe I didn’t have a choice after all…
I’m not sure what you are going to school for, but had I realized during my law school selection process the importance of going to school where you practice, I might’ve gone for the $100,000 school. It was very hard for me to break into the Denver market from an out-of-state school. You might not have this issue.

I’m going back for my MBA. A little more transferrable than a law degree, but at the same time, easier to find a job where you want to work after (and where the industry basically lives). Hence why I’m leaning towards Cali.
Both are far away from home and both offered me scholarship money. One ends up being slightly more expensive than the other, but when you’re talking about that much money, it’s really rather insignificant.
I still need to visit the other school to give it a fair look I think. I loved the campus and the people down in Cali and I need to know how I feel about the city/school/people in Nashville. When I stepped onto McGill’s campus during my undergrad search, I just ‘knew’ and it felt different than the other places I’d been before and saw after. I know how I felt at UCI, just need to see how I feel about Vandy.

If my $.02 counts for anything (and it does in world’s outside of Courtney’s), I’m gonna go out on a limb and say your personality is better suited for Cali.
Although it’d be quite the social experiment to place your sarcastic humor and ‘charming’ personality in amongst the Southern Belle’s of Tennessee.
I think that your view of the faculty, staff, and students is the best approach in guiding your decision. These are the people that are going to get you through all of the ridiculousness that is grad school.
SO, if every time you open your mouth during your visit everyone just stares at you making you feel like you are the lowest form of matter on the planet, DON’T GO!!! Not even if the school is supposed to be the best MBA program ever.
Grad school can be really fun if you are there with people who have a similar outlook on life. If you don’t feel like there are other people to share in your misery then you will probably drop out and feel like it was a big waste of time.

Those bitches ain’t got shit on me.
Are you saying I couldn’t be a Southern Belle? Pfft…

Thanks for the input! I know what you mean about the people being the important ones. From a pure rankings perspective, they are close enough, however my mother feels one has a better, more well known name than the other. But quite frankly if I hate my 2 years there and the people I’m with, what will I care about the name?
Just a lurker on this thread, but here’s my 2c:
The differentiation between different programs comes from the opportunities offered immediately after graduation (strength of on-campus recruiting) and ongoing networking – both with your classmates and the broader alumni network. Some schools foster better intraclass relations and/or alumni loyalty. Others, (think part-time programs) are more about getting a piece of paper. Also, if you’ve already decided what you want to do afterward, it’s probably clear which program is better. IMO, location should only be a factor if it’s a really close call.
I wouldn’t be too concerned about liking the professors or anything like that. What you learn is less important than who you meet and the relationships you build.
