That would be an interesting training session.

You’d have to scare the curlers out of the squat racks though. And be careful, they can easily curl 65lbs for reps!!
You’ve got hawt abzzzz.

Hahaha

Well the meet itself is a powerlifting meet O and I are in. The next day lifting festivities (after I kill my hangover I imagine) would likely occur at our dear old gym. Especially now that we have a power rack

Are you hitting the Burly gym tonight? Come on. You know you want to.
Sadly no, my only appearance there is on Saturdays because I get enough of the go train during the week…and on that note, when they say 24/7, they don’t really mean 24/7 when they kick me out at 6pm on a Saturday…

I did manage to get some rack pulls in on our fancy new gear though…changing plates can be a pain in the ass when people are doing corner presses right in there tho.

You guys are in the Niagara area right?
When’s the meet, I’ve got a CPU card…

We’re closer to Toronto (well I guess I am, but O might be closer to Niagara), but the meet is in Niagara on Jan 24th. You should come  Total T-Nation party!

PS. I saw your post in O’s log about your squat shoes. I was looking at those ones. What do you think of them??

Didn’t go to the barn tonight… my back is finally starting to feel less tight and every time it starts to feel better, I squat and it gets tight again. Since I’m out of town Sunday visiting my brother and therefore missing training, I figured it probably wouldn’t hurt to have a full 10 days off squatting, so I skipped the barn and just did my bench at the gym.

My gym obviously doesn’t have 1.25lb plates like the barn, so I used the collars as weight. Todd, myself and one of the trainers all thought they weighed about 1lb each, hence the weird numbers today… I was feeling super strong though.

Bench:
45x10x1
65x5x1
85x5x1
87x4x1
90x3x1
92x2x1
95x1x1 → PR
100x1x1 → PR
85x5x1 w/ pause on last rep
75x10x1 w/ pause on last rep

Flat DB Press:
25x8x3

CG Bench:
70x8x3

After 95 went up so easily I decided to go for 100…break into triple digits! It also went up fairly quickly, although I doubt I could have gotten it up with a pause. Getting there though!

Getting into a powerlifting arch while at a commercial gym is always entertaining. First, some guy asked if I needed a spot with “that much weight” on my warmup set of 65. I said no. I then watched said guy go to a bench and basically do lockouts because his ROM was so shitty with 135lbs with one foot on the ground and the other on the bench. Later as I was leaving he was doing a set (still 135lbs…he’d wandered away for a while) with both legs stretched in front of him as far as they could go.

A little later, one of the trainers just finished training a client who had been using the bench next to mine. His client didn’t even have his feet set on the ground, just sort of lounged out in front of him. Anyways, his client leaves and I get into my arch. After I easily complete my set and the boy (who was unracking for me) walks away, he tells me I shouldn’t arch my back like that while doing bench or I would hurt myself, I should lay flat on the bench. I explained that I was powerlifting and having a good arch was important. He says “Powerlifters don’t arch their backs like that when they bench”. I smiled and nodded.

An older guy that’s a regular was there as well and I heard him say to the boy while I was lifting “look at that arch” fairly loudly. By the time I racked the bar, there were about 5 guys from around the gym looking at me. Seriously, I missed the barn tonight.

They are great for olympic lifting, which in turn makes them great for squats. I got them specifically for OL, but I would have got the same ones as Julie if I hadn’t have found a great deal on the interwebz. They fit small and narrow, try a pair of Stan Smiths at Footlocker or something to get the good size if you end up ordering them.
QPF has a meet in February, probably within 2 weeks of yours. I gotta figure out what I’m doing after the upcoming provincials, training wise. But damn, if Bartl is coming…

Hands off. He’s all mine.

You can look but don’t touch  haha

Haha Court isn’t general fitness fun!
They are getting used to me now at the gym where I work, but I’ve never seen anyone else use the squat rack for squats, just chins and curls. It’s great fun when I go in with wraps, chalk and my belt. Plus, I’m 1 of maybe 3 girls who even trains there. I had a old guy hovering around my bench last week, he kept asking if I needed a spot and I think he was scared.

Having to ride the GO is a poor excuse since I do the same. They mean 24/7 from Monday - Thursday, close early Friday and earlier Saturday/Sunday. It’s so all the drunkards don’t go in on Fri/Sat nights.

Yeah it’s a little tight back there now with any of the racks… just use your brute T-Nation strength and evil glare the corner pressers out of the way

Great work on the bench. What a good feeling that is. If you ever want 1lb weights, I got jogging wrist weights from Walmart. I just velcro them around the bar.

You’re a sweeter person than I am about the young kid telling you not to arch on the bench. It irritated me just reading that. I’m quite proud of my arch. When Jack was still training with us he said he was envious of mine. Last night Pete was talking about watching some women lifters on Youtube and he said their arch was so high and their arms (relatively) short that they only needed a few inch range of motion. At least it appearted that way to him.

My problem is holding the arch so I’ve started chalking my shoulders and bum from time to time to make me stick to the bench.

It wasn’t so much him telling me not to arch my back that pissed me off as it was him telling me powerlifters don’t arch their back. Wtf?

Be honest…the only reason you chalk your shoulders and bum is so that you can later walk into Timmy’s with white stuff all over you. Pervert.

You two make my mornings with your banter.

I’m gonna try and be there one day to witness your arching and crack off comments in the background to try and get a rise out of you Court.

O, I think he wants us. Quick, hide! lol

If one day I hear comments from someone I don’t know I’m going to go up to them and be like “Are you that NeelyDan douche? Shut up and lift”. (Note, I do not actually think you are a douche, I’m just a complete bitch when I’m lifting and get interupted by stupidity)

yay for 100!

FWIW, I don’t arch my back…plus I don’t consider myself a PL, nor do I have anyone to properly show me.

You are lucky that you get to train with people that know wtf they are doing!!

Well, to minimize interuption, I’ll wear a shirt with “I’m that NeelyDan douche” on the front - I’m all about efficiency as well, I dig your style.

This is easily settled by a 3-some, sorry sayjin…you can watch though, or whoever has the highest combined weight of their lifts gets me.

Ok, so enough of you build this girl’s ego up enough but I thought I would just mention a few points at this particular time.

A mere 9 months ago Court couldn’t even do a single real pushup. I’m talking January 17th, 2008. Struggled to do a single pushup.

She was squatting 30-40lbs.

And deadlifting?? LOL! That wasn’t even on the radar.

Today she can squat 180lbs for the same reps she was squatting 30-40lbs. We all know her PR in Squat and there is video evidence to prove it.

She benched triple digits yesterday.

She’s pulling over 200lbs.

Not a bad little transformation. I wonder what any of us would give to have the same kind of increases in a 9.5 month period.

We’ll have to do a check again on January 17th, 2009 and see what she accomplished in the span of a full year. 300/250/135?

I don’t think that you necessarily need an arch if you’re not PLing… after all, we do it to decrease our ROM. We also drive through our heels to get as much of our full body strength behind it as possible. (Says the Newb)

You’re just saying this cuz you know I’m in a shit mood today and you’re trying to boost it. Either way, I’m okay with it.

By struggled to do a real pushup I think you mean I fell flat on my face during the lowering portion of the movement and you laughed at me.

oh yaaaaaa? How many pushups CAN you do? :stuck_out_tongue:
