V,

Got Relativism?

Justin,

You may consider this proof that the bible is 100% accurate. While it is entirely possible that they may have written what they believe to be 100% accurate but unless someone was following jesus around with a tape recorder or writing down everything he said exactly when he said it I cannot believe there is a 100% complete transfer of information.

You could tell me something and I could then write what you said 10 minutes later and I bet I would not get it down word for word. I would probably get it pretty close but I would subconsiously impose what I thought you said and possibly what I thought you meant into my transcript. This is human nature and since humans wrote the bible, not a tape recorder or god himself, I cannot believe it is 100% accurate.

Further, My interpretation of the exact words written might be different than your interpretation. I do believe jesus existed, If you want to call him the son of god I will agree with you, I however think you and I are also the sons of god. To me jesus was probably a great man, much the same way I think pat Tillman was a great man, or Gahndi etc.

I do not wish to deter anybody from their point of view as all points of view are 100% ok. I only state my point of view as a point of reference. If someone wishes to explore what I have stated further than that is ok also. Similar to steely’s position, I have studied many religions and spiritual paths available to me. In the end I have used what I have learned collectively to identify the best path for myself, It just so happens that it is not to believe 100% in any religion or spiritual path. No human can or will ever know 100% of existance, or the meaning behind everything. Learn what you can, and follow your heart and soul. Also You cannot fail:)

Bangs,

Not sure what you mean by that? Is it a book? Or do you mean my posts don’t seem relative?

Realitivism
A theory, especially in ethics or aesthetics, that conceptions of truth and moral values are not absolute but are relative to the persons or groups holding them.
-Dictionary-

I believe in absolute truth. Truth is not relative.

I am really impressed. No really violent attacks. Debating, but no attacks. Those of you who are christian are truly better than the ones I know around here. Normally when I open up and tell someone I am not christian, they threaten to burn me and tell me I am going to hell.
I will chime in against the angry at god thing. I have no problem with any gods, but I think they are all just a creation of their followers. They only have power as long as they have followers. Therefore, they are created by man. (here’s some real blasphemy.)
No anger here. Just honest disbelief. (sorry Zeus, I still think your character concept is really cool)

Evangelical Christian and happy to be one. My life did a 180 after I accepted Christ. I guess I have just experienced to much in my life not to believe in God.

I think there is an absolute Truth – the question is whether we can discern it. There are absolutes – the speed of light comes to mind. The limit is on our ability to comprehend and understand, which also makes it difficult to claim knowledge of any absolutes.

Given the little debates on this thread, and the people who don’t like proseltyzing (sp?), I have a question:

If someone really believes that you will burn in hell if you don’t believe as they do, and they don’t tell you about it in some manner or other, what kind of person does that make him?

I suppose it’s akin to seeing someone do squats in a way you know will blow his back out. People are always asking “Should I give advice or just shut up about it?”

Just curious. I really don’t appreciate being “preached at” most of the time, but to the extent someone has the sincere (that’s KEY) belief that I’m going to hurt myself, and shares it in an unobnoxious manner (that’s also KEY), I’m not offended.

Question for Atheists:

Why is it that 95% of atheists refer to a singular God (usually the Christian God, regardless of context)? Shouldn’t it always be pluralized (eg “I don’t believe that any Gods exist”) when speaking generally, or specified when speaking about a particular God (eg “your God” or “the Christian God”)? Also lacking is the use of reference to “a God”, as in “one of many”.

I’ve always wondered about this…

Simple. We reject the concept of God.

If you reject the concept as a whole, you automatically reject all its different underlying variances.

I would also like to add that I too am pleased that there really hasn’t been any personal attacks or attacks against anyones faith. All honest and noble discourse. Good job everyone.

Wow!
Some of you are having to work waaaay to hard to try to prove God doesn’t exist…as evidenced by your extreme verbage!
All I have to say is that the Bible is true!
Come on over to the light guys! Jesus Christ has an open door:0)

I am a secular humanist.

From http://www.secularhumanism.org/intro/what.html

Secular Humanism is a term which has come into use in the last thirty years to describe a world view with the following elements and principles:

  • A conviction that dogmas, ideologies and traditions, whether religious, political or social, must be weighed and tested by each individual and not simply accepted on faith.
  • Commitment to the use of critical reason, factual evidence, and scientific methods of inquiry, rather than faith and mysticism, in seeking solutions to human problems and answers to important human questions.
  • A primary concern with fulfillment, growth, and creativity for both the individual and humankind in general.
  • A constant search for objective truth, with the understanding that new knowledge and experience constantly alter our imperfect perception of it.
  • A concern for this life and a commitment to making it meaningful through better understanding of ourselves, our history, our intellectual and artistic achievements, and the outlooks of those who differ from us.
  • A search for viable individual, social and political principles of ethical conduct, judging them on their ability to enhance human well-being and individual responsibility.
  • A conviction that with reason, an open marketplace of ideas, good will, and tolerance, progress can be made in building a better world for ourselves and our children.
  • Vegita- I understand what you are saying about the possibility of the accounts of Jesus not being 100% accurate. Not to take away support from what I told you to consider, but I personally have doubts as to whether the Bible is 100% accurate, for whatever reason, as well. So apparently I should consider what I previously posted about the accuracy of the bible as well. Thank you for your reply.

“Religion is a business. Faith is for the believers.”
Man, this post is intriguing. CHRIST really is not like other religions prophets. Jesus sayed he WAS the son of God. He hung with the hoes, leopards, and outcasts. He was a server everywhere he went. He would heal the sick, share God’s heart all day and then go to a solitary place to pray to the Father. The Bible says that demons that possessed men knew who he was when they encountered him. He was so humble. If he was not God in the flesh why didn’t he say, “Oh yeh, I was just lying these last 3 years of my life. Stop torchering me”? People that say there is no Absolute Truth, really are making an absolut statement right there. There is absolutely no truth? Anyway, all I know is that if you really desire truth and you sincerely ask the God of the Universe for truth he won’t Hide it. So many people say they seek but they don’t go out and read or ask God anything. And when the going gets rough its easier to live for yourself and blame God than to rely on Him when its tough. The Bible says, "Many will say Lord, haven’t I prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name? And the Lord will say, “I never knew you you evil doer.” My life has had many tragedies and really tough issues hit me, but when Satan has tried to come against me, I have stayed committed to a God that loves me and is mighty.
