Redsol1 - BJJ and 5/3/1 - The Austerity Project

Need to catch up on my logs from the last week, but it’s been good. 3 of my team mates tested for their blue belts Thursday night.

And this happened

This type of training is very interesting. It does a really good job of exposing weaknesses in a particular position. What I learned from this round is it’s actually very hard to submit from back (or any position) when all the uki has to do is escape. My game is very dependent on transitions and capitalizing on my opponent’s movement. This type of drilling takes that away and made me focus on my back control and where I had to tighten up.

OK, catchup time

Been on the road or dealing with other obligations the last 2 weeks. Last Thursday was belt test night for a couple of team members, one from the home gym and two from our sister gym. The guys/gals did great. Afterwards I got called up to receive my 2nd stripe on my blue belt. There were some 'Bionic Man" jokes made, which i found hilarious and were lost on the younger team members. The assistant purple belt coach said “long overdue” when my name was called. I don’t think i’ll ever forget that. He’s been part mentor, part arch enemy for the whole time i’ve been doing BJJ, so that meant a lot to me.

I should be home for the next couple of weeks (hopefully). i’ve got good gyms i can work at while i travel, i just need to schedule work, my travel time, and the rest of life to ensure i can take advantage of them while on travel.

BJJ - No Gi Advanced

Finishing up half guard month with Q&A and lockdown escapes. After technique we did another king of the hill positional sparing. Tori started in Half (which ever he wanted) and Uki started on top. Tori had to submit or sweep from half, no reguarding or advancing positions. Uki had to escape or submit from top half.

Learned a lot here. I need to work on keeping my elbows tight to prevent the kimura. I got caught several times. I also need to keep tighter when passing. No rolling, just good hard positional sparing.

Had a couple minutes after so i grabbed a white belt and tried to figure out a shoulder/elbow lock i saw on Instagram. I think i figured it out, but i’m going to have to drill it more.

Well, September and October were an “interesting” couple of months.

September went pretty well. Kept on 5/3/1 with my reduced working weights on press. I Felt like I was making some good progress. BJJ was hit or miss due to work travel, but my main training partner was tapped to test for his purple belt in November, so he and i started working on his test.

Our Purple belt test is basically “Blue Belt Plus”. There’s lots of carry over from our blue belt test, with more self defense techniques. For the ground portion there’s additional techniques at each position, plus 4 “your choice”. This is where you start to show your game and how you’re developing beyond the material shown in classes.

October was a complete shit show.

Early in the month my wife’s new horse had a medical issue. Long story, but he ended up having emergency surgery, a stay at the hospital, then 2 weeks in horsey rehab, all about 2 hours from our place. If anyone is REALLY interested I can give more details.

He required a pretty detailed care regime once he got released from rehab and we decided he couldn’t stay at the boarding facility we had him at. We had horse on our property for years, so we decided to rehab the barn and move both horses back home. This involved releveling stalls, tearing out the old stall mats, putting new ones in, checking fences, ect, ect. Finally got the boys back home two weeks ago.

BJJ was pretty nonexistent except for some afterhours/early morning drilling sessions with my main training partner.

Pretty much all my energy in October went to work, work travel, and horse stuff.

On top of all this my wife learned that her contract is not being renewed and she’s going to be out of a job Jan 1. They may extend her contract a month or two after that if they haven’t found a full time replacement, but that’s still up in the air.

The above situation is what lead to my post about 5/3/1 once a week a couple of weeks ago. We’re going to have to tighten our belts for a little while.

After a little more research I think i’ve found a path to continue on 5/3/1. I’m going to go with the plan laid out by @navid123 in the post below

Week1
Press and deadlift 531
front squat/ push press
Rows
biceps
abs
abs
rehab prehab

Week 2
Squat and bench 531
snatch grip dead/ Close grip bench
abs
abs
row
Biceps
rehab/prehab

this will be my Sunday early AM gym session

During the week i’m going to go with the Coates Dumbell only plan since i can do that at home or at a hotel gym if i’m on travel. I also have bands, a sand bag, pullup bar, ect at home i can add some variety with if i need to.

BJJ won’t change and I’m going to start visiting gyms at my various work locations again. My coach put a stop to that back in the C-19 days, but he’s good with it now.

I was thinking about starting a new log based on this, but i’m just going to keep this one rolling. I’ve edited the title for fun and i’ll change it back once i get back to the gym when things get beter. I’ll start posting more regularly again after my first workout this week.

BJJ Open Mat

Good way to get back to the mats! Walked in and there were two of the kids from big kids working on their Grey belt test. they asked that i help them out. We ran thru the material, i asked them what they thought they had issues with and told them what i thought they should work on.

After that i rolled with our really big white belt. He’d like 6’-4" and 240. he really likes to pin wrists. I worked getting my knees in to punch-block 2 and defeating his wrist control. I was working a couple of shoulder crunch positions and he caught me a couple times. I got him with a straight ankle and a really wierd tea-bag-gift-wrap-kimura thing.

Then got called over to help one of the adult white belts prep for her blue belt test.

early BJJ drill time/test prep

today’s drill session with MTP was a complete faf. I woke up with a headache that just would not go away. Took an alieve before i left the house and it just wouldn’t let up. MTP and I just shot the shit for an hour and then we went home. Headache finally let up around noon.

After that, more barnwork. The skylights needed to be resealed before winter. Also hung some storage hooks and a hose reel.

Sounds familiar… ha

lmao!

it was really wierd. I had him in side, and kept trying to get his hip frame in, so i kept switching to Kesa, baseball sliding under his arm, and transitioning back to high side. The final time i did it i got his arm across his face, so i stepped over to a really high N/S (Teabag) and put belly down on his elbow to secure the arm. His free arm started flapping, so i got wrist control with my south hand, slipped the kimura in and pulled his back off the mat to finish. After he tapped he looked at me and said “you had me all twisted up, what was that?!?” I looked at him and said “I have no idea, i just made it up!”

BJJ Advanced Gi

Our coaches main training partner from way back when and black belt visited and taught tonight. He’s a small dude and has a wicked game. I really like how he rolls. Tonight was side control and he taught two sweeps from bottom half. One was a really cool lever type sweep using the knee in from the standard shrimp escape to guard. Really cool. Reminds me a little of the mechanics of the old man/John wayne sweep from half guard. Other one was a harpoon sweep that can be used from butterfly as well.

during rolling I drilled purple belt stuff with MTP. After that i helped drill brown belt test stuff with the Kids Class coach, who’s testing for his brown later this month.

No rolling, but it was a good class. I got “good 'ole days” vibes from tonight’s class. Tired, sweaty, lots of laughs.
