How long(days) should you be sore after a good workout? How long is too much and will lead you to overtraing.I’ve been doing Ian King’s workout for 4 weeks and I barely get sore.I feel like I’m not doing enough. I used to do about 15-25 sets in a workout before and maybe be sore for a day or two.Any thoughts?
If being sore is your objective, there may be easier ways to achieve it than working out, such as getting in a car accident for example! Just food for thought: consider basing your training on performance goals rather than the sometimes unecessary side-effects of that training. In other words, if you can gradually temper your body to be capable of performing more and more work each workout, you’ll grow, regardless of whether or not you become sore afterward. I seem to be a lone voice on this subject, but trust me, I’m right.
I argree with Staley, but if you do get sore from working out, unless it’s abserd soreness, it’s definitley good, right?
If you wanna get sore, you are in the wrong game. Take up kick boxing or something. Seriously I also learnt the hard way, that 20 sets of every exercise is just a waste, a waste of time and growth.
Overtraining is a real problem. you don’t have to ignore the old adage that says “no gain without pain”, just put it into perspective.
Intensity in the gym is where the pain must be felt, not all the time.
I achieved really spectacular gains when I went through a very busy time in my life and HAD to cut down on my workout times.
I learnt too, NEVER to work a muscle that was still sore from a previous workout. Remember, gains happen when we REST (not in a state of agony).
Hope this helps.

Shaun
It’s not that I judge a workout on being sore alone but it seems when you have a good workout you seem to get more sore. Since I started the lower volume, my strength and also my measurements have gone down. The last time I measured was about month and a half ago and I was eating around 2400 calories then. Now I am eating 3300 calories(massive eating guidelines) and it seems I should me putting on some mass now.And when I took those measurements I was working 10-12 hours of pretty hard labor, then working out 15-25 sets afterward.
Just bumping it up so I can maybe get some more thoughts.
try eating more cals.
I’m kinda in the same situation. I’ve been doing IK’s upper and lower body workouts for 3 weeks, and like you, I used to do a lot more volume. While these programs were supposed to lead to extreme soreness, my DOMS was pretty minor. Peak of DOMS is generally about 48 hours after the workout, though I’m usually most sore about 24 hours later. The important thing to note is progress, though. I’ve gained about 4-5 pounds in the three weeks using the Get Big diet, and my strength is up too (although not as much as I’d hoped so far and I don’t think my measurements have changed much). Since you’re not making progress, I’d recheck your diet first. If you’re a naturally skinny guy, you can probably afford to add more carbs.
I’ve actually noticed the opposite. When I have a good workout I am rarely sore. Why is this you say? Well, when feeling strong and fresh, I have a better sense of my body and no when to stop. Another thing is that lately I’ve noticed I don’t get sore from high rep workouts 8-12 but this could be since I’ve been training for 6 years. For my training, being sore is bad. I’d like to be able to walk around campus, not limp or crawl. If you want to be sore, the best thing to do would be shock your body every 3-4 weeks with new routines.
“try eating more calories” That will make him even less sore!
The fact is sorness does not equate to muscle growth. It does show the muscle has been traumatized *BUT the muscle can be traumatized without getting soar. It just depends on the preson, bodypoart, genetics, supplement use, diet, etc., etc.
My 28" thighs never seem to get sore and I TRAIN THEM HARD! Same with my back & bi’s, yet my chest is always soar after I train it…
The bottom line is Jason-after YOU train only YOU know how much YOU really gave. If YOU gave it all you had, or even close to it good things WILL come your way “and that is true.”
I only seem to get sore the first time or two I try a new exercise or the first time I start a new exercise split.
So long as you’re progessing, I don’t think it matters much.
