I’d like a little input from some others on this. I am an experienced lifter, and my favorite split, the one in which I felt I made the most progress, was a 3-2. Example:
Day 1: Chest and back
Day 2: Legs and traps
Day 3: Shoulders and arms (tri and bi isolation)
Days 4-5: Off;
Day 6: Repeat, etc.
Because of my job, I have been forced to use total body workouts for the past few months, but soon I will be able to switch back to a split. Generally speaking, the volume was along the lines of anywhere from 8-12 sets per movement, towards the high end as reps went lower and vice-versa, and usually utilizing three different exercises.
Example: a typical back day may be 4 sets of bent over rows, 3 sets of DB rows, and 3 sets of Lat pulls. The only exception to this is shoulders; since they get hit on each of the other 2 days, volume would be more along the lines of 6-8 sets, 2 maybe 3 exercises.
So, my question is this: does anyone think it would be feasible to cut the days off from 2 to 1 in order to get more lifts in? Is 48 hours enough recovery time for minor muscle groups like tris and bis, and with the reduced volume, enough for the shoulders too? How long do some of you typically take for shoulder/arm recovery, and on what volume? I’d especially like to hear from anyone who uses a similar 3-2 split. Thanks.
