I know there was a best beer thread somewhere but I’m going for a slightly different angle. Turning 21 in a few days and want to have some beers on my birthday. I want to enjoy the fact that I don’t just have to get a 30 of PBR or a bottle of jack, and I’m actually not going to get drunk cause of health issues.
Anyways call me a pussy but I don’t enjoy really dark heavy beer like guiness or budweiser. I’ll drink it, but its not exactly my favorite. So I figure I’ll give some beers I like, and maybe you guys could toss out some suggestions. You know, like a fun game…
-shock top
-blue moon
-magic hat nines
-smirnoff (just kidding)
-sam adams
-dog fish head 90 minute IPA (I’m not a hipster I swear)
I’m also not a fan of the heavier beers (which I wouldn’t consider bud)
Check these out:
Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse (amazing)
Schlafly Hefeweizen
Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat
I used to put down St. Pauli Girls when they were on special quite a bit
I don’t really like IPA’s, but I remember He’Brew having a good one
Abita Purple Haze
Tequiza (tastes like fruit loops)
Beck’s… as far as hoppy beers go
Canadian beer and Irish whiskey- I used to really like Moosehead and Molson Golden, and sometimes a fifth of Bushmills. Those Canadians make some good beer.
Only one I’ve heard of is beck’s. Always thought that was a darker beer though, guess I was mistaken. I have never tried any IPA’s but they seem to be something I would like.

Maybe heavy wasn’t the word I was looking for… Or maybe I’m just a pansy ok…

It’s Ok I’m not much of a beer connoisseur and am not very familiar with language used to describe them either- other than “Good” and “Cowpiss”.

I like Budweiser just fine but have never heard it called heavy and dark.
I don’t like IPAs because they’re too bitter for me and every beer snob uses them as their barometer of beer snobbiness.
If you like SHock Top then I recommend Kronnenbourg 1664. That’s one of my summer favourites.[/quote]
I haven’t had a bud in like 4 years so maybe thats just how I remember it in my high school binge drinking days. All I know is it tasted like shit, or “cow piss” as skyzks so eloquently put it. I may have to check out the Kronnenbourg 1664. Is this a beer that is hard to find?
I’ve traveled quite a bit and drank lots of beers in those travels, so if you tell me what part of the world you are in I may have some specific local recommendations. Getting fresh beer changes the character quite a bit, particularly on hop-heavy brews like IPA.
Otherwise, just about everything mentioned is good. One nationally-available brew that has not been mentioned is Stone. If you like Dogfish Head 90 minute you will probably like their IPA’s. Ruination is very good and they also put out a big bottle that says “Drink By ”. It is an excellent IPA.
Racer 5 by Bear Republic is my go to IPA. Clean, well balanced flavor. It’s aggressively hopped but not to the point where it overwhelms.
Dogfish Head 60min IPA - Everything I say about Racer 5 applies to this one except the 60min has some citrusy notes in it that I really love. I’ve tried the 90min and the 120. 90 for me, is okay, IMO not as well balanced as the 60. As for the 120, not really for me, flavor was much too intense up front.
Old Rasputin by North Coast on nitro (has to be on nitro) is my favorite stout hands down! Complex, well nuanced smoky flavors with just the right amount of sweetness.
My two favorite double IPA’s of all time are Pliny The Younger by Russian River and Dorado by Ballast Point. Oh and honorable mention to Café Racer 15 by Bear Republic.
I can talk beer all day but it’s kinda late and I gotta hit the sack

I’d also suggest Chimay Ale Blue Label if you want something that tastes great and will also knock you on your ass.

Are you trolling the guy? If he doesn’t like Guiness and even Bud is too heavy, there is no way he’ll like Chimay Blue. I love stouts but can’t stand Chimay Blue. The red and yellow would probably be okay though.
Duvel is a good gateway Belgian beer. And it will get you trashed.
