Rebuild This Somewhat Broken Body

Yeah - 5-6 hours is pretty respectable for an insomniac  I’m happy these days on 6 or so hours after enduring 3-4 hours for long periods of time.
It’s a bit girly but lavender oil has actually helped me in the past when things haven’t been too bad, but for those nights when it feels you need a sledgehammer I use a highish dose of promethazine, a sedating antihistamine - might be worth a shot if you haven’t tried it.[/quote]

With my ongoing fatigue, any depressant / sedative seems to hit me too hard, but I’ll keep it in mind thanks. And nothing wrong with lavender! I often burn incense, helps calm the mind

I was pretty unimpressed with my benching strength, but overall was a decent workout. Glad to hit 3 x 15 on rack chins, means I can add weight next time. And it was nice to FINALLY increase the OHP weight haha. It took weeks to hit 3 x 15!

This workout was an improvement on the last one in terms of reps for every lift - really pleased! I’m now aiming for day on, day off rather than the usual MTXTF arrangement. Seems more rest is helpful as I am still recovering energy after finishing chemotherapy.

In slightly grim news, my workmate died yesterday, of kidney cancer. He was terminal at diagnosis, and given <5 years to live. He made it to 10 months. He was 51, and a hell of a nice guy. Regardless how dark I get about my own cancer situation, at least I have a good shot at surviving it.

Good news today.

I will be having my hernia repair in early 2015 - exact date TBA. But it should be before March. Sounds like a fairly heavy duty operation, as I am to expect 3-4 weeks off my desk job! So that is awesome, really excited about getting fixed at last.

I’ll actually be able to start seriously building my strength again. And deadlifting and squatting properly! Awesome!

Downside, I need to have a CT scan in the next three weeks to make sure there’s no active cancer first. Scanxiety extreme!

Great news on the upcoming surgery! Glad to see you lifting away.

If it makes you feel any better, you squat and deadlift more than me, and I don’t even have a hernia.

Haha thanks bro. But… you are a bird!

Sorry to hear about your friend, but great news your surgery is coming soon. I don’t have internet at home right now - saving money! So am a bit behind on here & will prob be checking in a little less often i.e whenever I can hop on someones free wifi! but I’ll def still be following when I can.

Hope everything’s good bud

What’s up people. Must be time for a catch-up in here.

Cancer Stuff:
-I had a clear (“no obvious evidence of recurrence”) CT scan in January
-Blood tumour markers have improved; ie they’re going down, not up
-A laproscopic investigation in March showed nothing to be alarmed about

Hernia Stuff:
-Full incision, plus 5 laproscopic incisions. I was in hospital 1 week. Had a good old time fucked up on morphine and ketamine.
-I’ve now recovered from this, and was cleared to resume exercise last Tuesday***
-Still in a reasonable amount of discomfort, and pain when lifting, but they say the repair is as strong as it’ll ever be

***OK. Last Tuesday I met with my surgeon and his assistant (junior surgeon). My surgeon told me they did as strong a repair as possible, but he’d prefer I take up jogging or cycling instead of even moderate lifting of weights. I said I don’t want to look like a jogger or cyclist, and he said I need to adjust my ideals. Anyway, I told him I’ll file his comments for consideration and we left it at that.
The junior surgeon told me the repair is 80% as strong as my original core would have been, and in his opinion I’m fine to lift weights but should not go for 1RM attempts on deadlifts or squats, and should try to keep “moderate” in mind.

So yeah. I don’t really feel very good about what the surgeons told me, but I’m not interested in jogging or cycling, and hey I might die in a couple of years so fuck it - I’ll do what I enjoy.

Diet Stuff
-Currently 89.5kg
-Want to get heavier but not fatter, so I’m cutting as of last week
-Ingesting 2400 calories; will adjust as I go, to ensure approximately 500g weight loss per week
-Will cut until I see all abs without straining and downlight (hah!)

Lifting Stuff
-Still trying to 100% decide on a template for my return; open to suggestions. 4 days per week is what I want to do. No particular limitations, aside from being weak!
-Last week I established “comfortable” 5RM for the 4 Main Lifts and did a Triumvirate style assistance plan to get shit moving after 3 months out:
Press - 5 x 50kg (E1RM 58kg)
Deadlift - 5 x 120kg (E1RM 140kg)
Bench - 5 x 80kg (E1RM 93kg)
Squat - 5 x 110kg (E1RM 128kg)

So yeah. Today is a rest day, so by tomorrow I need to have a training plan! Good times.

Hope everyone is well.

My wife was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer 3 years ago when she was 27 years old.
I just wanted to stop by to wish you a speedy recovery.

Great to hear from you Panzer! I don’t really have any advice, but best of luck with everything!

Cheers man. I guess I’d say I’m recovered, though some chemo side effects still linger months after finishing treatment. Just a case of “wait and see” as to whether I remain in remission permanently.

Best wishes to your wife also. And if she’s not a member, tell her to google Colon Club. It’s a damn good support forum if she ever wants to stop by :).

I’m doing the 5’s Progression template from Beyond 531, with FSL added in when I feel up to it, and Triumvirate kinda assistance.
I’ve used 85% of my calculated maxes instead of 90%. I’m really wanting to ease back in without pushing myself for quite some time, no room for ego!
