Reason for Poundages

I am just curious why the plates are weighted at 45 and not 50. It makes my morning workouts that much harder since I have to do math. I have even started figuring out which plates it will be the night before.

Also, is there a barbell to dumbbell conversion percentage? That is if I do X as BB bench then it is Yx2 for DB Bench.

45 pounds equals 20 kilos. Welcome to the joys of the metric system. If you ever come to Australia you can appreciate it too.

  1. coversion to metric system

  2. No not really,. there are tables that give an idea but none are universal and correct. Some say 80-90% I do believe. It really boils down to the individual. Use both

You are kidding me right? This is basic math that you should be able to do in your mind.

I find it hard to believe people have trouble with such simple math. When I was out camping a few weeks back I stopped by the local store to buy some firewood. It cost me 24$ and I gave the clerk two 20s. She actually took her calculator out and did the subtraction twice to confirm…wow

Another education system success story…

What a humorless bunch. The math comment was to add some levity to the post, which was obviously lost on some of you. Take a deep breath and see the lighter side of life…it can be quite rewarding.

To the others, thank you for your explanation. Sometimes I wish we had just gone metric back in the 70’s when they were pushing us so hard to learn it in school. It would sure make it easier to know which is faster, 60mph or 100kph.

So instead of playing with yourself at night, you’re counting plates? I guess it’s better than counting sheep.

A suggestion - just do your weight calculations in metric. The biggest plates are 20 kg, next size down 10 kg and so on. Do it all in multiples of 10. And of course a standard bar is 20 kg as well.
