I’m new to LI and this site. I’m looking for a real gym. A place where chains and chalk are encouraged. I want to be next to someone benching 500+. Anyone know of a place like that?
Ultimate Fitness…patchogue/medford
thanks for the tip
Iron Island and Colisseum in Middle Village, Queens! And yes, Ultimate Fitness too. Where are you in LI? I am on the borderline of Nassau. Private message me if you want to speak.
You can also take a trip here and there to Skiba’s Barbell in NJ if you get invited by Skiba himself. I went to a Metal Militia seminar there this past year.
Thanks! I really appreciate the help.

Thanks! I’ll be in touch.
Ultimate Fitness in Riverhead also has a good core of guys. All three are Powerlifter friendly, and have competitors that work out at all three, especially Medford and Riverhead, but I believe you have to bring your own stuff. Gold’s Islip has supposedly been opening for the last year and still hasn’t, so I wouldn’t count on that (LI Strongman thread), but there’s a small group of lifters in Deer Park Gold’s, including myself, who all work out at separate times, but at least the place is PL friendly also, and at least has a 50# set of chains hidden in one of the closets that one of the members brought in.
Bradley - Sorry I took my damn sweet time getting back to you this spring - WHere are you located now???

Does anyone know if Coliseum allows O-lifts?

Sounds great. I’m going to check them out this weekend. I’ll be in touch about the training ideas discussed herein by next week. Thanks!

Yes. They have a platform, rubber bumper plates, and a chalk bowl. They also have boards (nicely made, sturdy ones with metal handles) and chains. I saw a meet there last October where Scott Sepe blasted up 600 on the bench with a bodyweight of 198.

Little Neck, Queens.
Alright, since some people are either too busy to respond to private messages or are simply aloof with them, I am posting my contact information here. BGFitnessNY@aol.com. I am SERIOUSLY interested in this powerlifting thing and I decided this year that I want to seek out some serious lifting partners.
In the past year, I have attended an Elite Fitness Seminar by Jim Wendler, a seminar by Joe DeFranco and a Metal Militia seminar by Sebastian Burns at Skiba’s Barbell. I am a dietitian by profession with the aims of becoming a sports dietitian-nutritionist. Currently, I am a clinical dietitian in a nursing home and am finishing one more class and a research paper for my Master’s in nutrition and exercise physiology at CW Post-LIU. I did my dietetic internship at Stony Brook University Hospital Dept of Family Medicine. I am MOST LIKELY attending Eric Cressey’s seminar on October 28th in MA. So, as you can see, I LIVE for nutrition and training.
I have not stated this for a pat on the back at all but merely stating who I am if anyone is interested in forming a circle of lifting partners and for just an overall strong support circle. I sure well know I will not be a successful trainer or sports dietitian in the future unless I become in sports myself. I plan on competing in the future. So, again, contact if interested!
Cool. I live all the way out in Shirley, but I teach in Far Rockaway now. If Colisseum is close to there, I may check it out or join Iron Island in the next month, once I get a little extra cash since it’s pretty much on the way home.
Those who were waiting for Islip Gold’s to open and train power/strength - Keep your guard up. I just trained there today, the first day it’s finally open and was told that I didn’t have open access to the speed/strength area (small track area with about 6 sleds and plenty of room for wind sprints) unless I specifically signed up for their speed school, which of course costs a shitload of extra money.
This was not what I was told over a year ago when I signed up based on the fact/promise that I would have open access to the equipment once the gym opened. Needless to say, I’m extremely pissed right now and hoping it was a misunderstanding and not some of the usual sales director bullshit to get a membership.
