Read Any Geoff Thompson?

Just curious if anyone here had read any of his books–more specifically his extrapolation on his 10 years bouncing in Coventry, England and not necessarily his “how-to” books. Just got finished reading the road rage thread and saw a lot of former boxers not liking how boxing worked. I would have thought that at least the punches if not the sport would be very effect at that range.

The two are related because in his autobiography, despite much TMA training, he found himself most often in a crowded situation where kicks were not effect and perfected, for him anyway, the short right cross to the jaw followed by shin to face as the guy fell then straight up and down axe kick to keep them down.

Looked hard to see if there were any bullshido complaints about him but didn’t see any on google on first pass.

what does bullshido mean?

the guy is genuine

his basic premise cannot be beaten imo with regards to very simple management of real life situations.

his methods work 100% in real life scenarios.

bullshido is a word play on bullshit and bushido–meaning a guy faking knowledge or experience in the martial arts (my hands are registered with the police as lethal weapons).

I liked his book a lot and his writing seemed very authentic. However, anymore, I always like to check backgrounds because experts seem to popup allover the place.

His trick of asking a question then launching the right cross is done almost to death in the book–as your first ‘go to’ would be in a fighting job. But he did seem to bring the hammer always, either scoring a knockout or dropping the guy. Continuously.

I tend to believe him as he got high enough profile that he would have been called out.

So I don’t really doubt anything but his elevation of the boxing right cross is pretty considerable. I’ve seen numerous guys get jacked by right crosses and it just seems like he’s had better than average luck with that strike.

Geoff thompson is legit - hence why you wont find many bullshido reports about him

The dude worked some of the most violent doors during one of the most violent periods for nightclub owners in the UK.

I’m not sure what you’re asking about though? His comments on boxing? All of his material I’ve read he has nothing but endless praise for boxing.

his success with the “question followed by the punch” isn’t hyperbole, if you’re wondering why he bangs on about it so much, I’d suggest its because it works. It’s simple, its effective and its violence of action - in most of the situations hes facing he doesnt have a lot of time to analyze or measure his opponent, he’s got about 5 seconds either way to take action or get the fuck out.

No, I must not have been clear–my fault. I don’t think engaging the brain center before attacking is hyperbole. I also think he wrote an honest account. I myself have always though boxing hand techniques at the very pinnacle of the striking pyramid for effectiveness.

I guess (and I think talking about helped me focus on what was bugging me) is his knockout and knockdown rate. I don’t think he’s lying though he may or may not have written for effect, which isn’t exactly the same as lying.

However I’ve seen some fights. I’ve seen some jaw strikes. Like everyone else who trains, I’ve thrown 'em and taken 'em. Everybody and their brother has watched two strikers in a boxing or mma match just banging the fuck out of each other for round after round after round (just choke the fucker out already). Hell, Anderson Silva just lets punchers hit him when he’s feeling spry.

I think Thompson is professional level tough and professional level good–but his right cross hits like kryptonite if his book is to be believed. And I say this having the utmost respect for boxing, but of the 300 or so altercations he describes something like 290 (to paraphrase) end with him jacking a guy into slumber in one punch.

I guess I’m trying to figure out the opinions of other people who are familiar with him what their opinion is on why he seemed to have such an uncommon success with a single punch (right cross)–even though it is admittedly a power punch.

Just curious and trying to get a understanding on it.

I generally agree that Thompson is a fairly credible individual.

However, not to split hairs, but nothing works “100%” in real life scenarios.

“I guess I’m trying to figure out the opinions of other people who are familiar with him what their opinion is on why he seemed to have such an uncommon success with a single punch (right cross)–even though it is admittedly a power punch”.

The answer lies in who is doing the punching and who is getting hit. In a boxing/MMA match, you have 2 fit, trained and sober guys who know they’re in a fight banging away at each other. At the club door, you have a hard and sober doorman, who knows how to put them together, hitting a (usually) drunk and unsuspecting punter. Thompson’s “ask em a question first” technique meant they weren’t expecting the hit because they didn’t know they were already in a fight.

This is spot on. I was nearly put on my arse a few weeks back by a girl who has no fighting experience at all. She play punched me in the jaw, hard(harder than she meant to), when I wasn’t looking. I’ve had a fair few fights in the past decade or so, with some top fighters, and never been down. I was as close to going from her punch as I ever have been in the ring. The truest phrase in boxing is ‘IT’S THE PUNCH YOU DON’T SEE COMING THAT KNOCKS YOU OUT’. It is definitely possible that a guy like Thompson can consistently set up a situation where he is knocking guys out.

I offer this commentary knowing that all anyone takes from it will be that I got my arse kicked by an untrained girl.

What was the question you asked HER, before the punch?? lol

Makes perfect sense. I also, as I read the replies had the thought–mouth piece.

No one was biting on a mouth piece and mso had an unclenched and,if talking, open mouth and thus loose jaw.

Appreciate the insights. I was liking what I was reading and it felt authentic but I kept putting the book down and thinking “damn he’s knocked a lot of guys out”.

Also made we want to get a pair of brass knuckles.

Exactly.

In a boxing match, Muay Thai fight, MMA fight, you have two fighters who are both fully aware that they are in a fight, and are fully dedicated to fighting the moment the bell rings. Hence they mentally and physically prepare themselves for being hit an thus it is a lot more difficult to knock them out (either to the head or the body).

In the types of situations that Thompson is referencing (basically sucker punches), the opponent will not be bracing for the punch, they will not have placed their cervical spine/chin in a position that will maximize stability and minimize the chances of the head/brain violently rotating or snapping back/to the side, and they will not have contracted the core muscles/compressed their rib cage to maximize protection of the vital organs against a body punch. This means that their reaction to getting hit by an unexpected punch will be very different and much more severe/dramatic than even the same person’s reaction in a mutual sparring match/fight.

I actually know several people who have had similar results as Thompson. A couple have true world class punching power, but others do not and still have managed to KO people with a single punch on numerous occasions by catching them by surprise and being accurate with their punch placement.

On the other hand, I know a few guys who have been hit full power (without warning) in the head with clubs or knight sticks (by some big guys) and had it barely phase them. So just know that there are all ends of the spectrum out there and if you choose to sucker punch someone, you’d better be prepared to escalate and/or throw down should it not KO them.

Rule 1 - Don’t be there in the first place
