My predicament is that every two weeks or so, I have to fast for the entire day(religious reasons). This means no food at all, just some fruits and water. What should I do on the day before and after?
Follow my normal diet, or eat more? (I generally put away around 3700 kcal.)
Is it okay to train on the days before the fast, or will the lack of food inhibit growth/recovery?
If you can eat fruit during the day- eat an assload of fruit, its good for you.
As for the night before, I’d say eat alot of cottage cheese or Metabolic Drive with some fats to further slow the digestion to stave off starvation the following day as much as you can.
Here is atrick I use for When I gotta train big in the morning and i don’t want o be hungry.
Get some Low carb sausages (pork is best for this but beef too if you can’t do pork) and loive oil. BBQ up about 3-4 or 5 sausages and make a spinach salad (huge) with olive oil and vinegar dressing (feel free to use lots). Put the sausages (cut up) into the salad and eat it the night before. This thing is all fiber (Insoluable) and fat and protein. takes ages to get through you. This makes it so that i am not hungry the next day until noon sometimes, especially if i chase it with some Metabolic Drive.
Make the fast day on of your off days and get some nice fruit in. Drink water out the butt too. take HOT-ROX to decrease hunger and stave off catabolism. I sometimes fast for a day after a refeed for the great fat burning/caloric wave effects.

You are talking about Ekadashi. Fruit and water are considered food. So if you are talking strictly speaking you probably shouldnt workout on dashami or dvadashi. Also when you break your fast make sure you get some elctrolytes like Gatorade and drink a shit ton of protein. You want to avoid refeeding syndrome (which is very bad).
Also as said before, it doesnt hurt to eat a lot before and after. If you can get “magic sauce” I would use that as well to prevent muscle wasting.
Speaking from personal expierience.

I just answered this.[/quote]
Correct, on Ekadasi. I don’t really eat much fruit, since it is supposed to be a fast, but I will load up on the day before from now on.
