ouch the bruises - never had those before. I might not be liftin right. I see another vid in my future that will crush my ego to bits.
sorry.
That’s cool that you’re the poster girl for “safe lifting.” I do think that lifting has made us more used to picking things up with our legs.
Nlmain - I’m sure you’re liftin just fine. I think I may not be lifting right, since only one leg seems to be bruising so well. Prob just my imbalances showing themselves. ![]()
Alisa - Yeah, my training has made me way more aware of how I’m lifting at work. Unfortunately, most of the people I work with, when they hear “lift with your legs”, think they need to squat the boxes up… but the vast majority of them don’t have the mobility to get down in a deep squat position and lift from the floor while maintaining a natural curve in their spines. But of course, the ergonomist who’s being consulted for the vid recommends lifting in that way… and thinks deadlifts are really dangerous. Ugh.
Yikes on the deadlift bruises! I’m sure your shins are feeling really tender right now. I sometimes wreck the front of my legs up like that too. The bruises look really frightening and serious, but I am always surprised at how quickly they heal up. Excellent job on deadlift and press PR.
Bruises just mean you are trying hard. ![]()
Very badass.
I don’t tend to bruise like that when deadlifting. But many people must bang or scrape the hell out of their shins since knee-high socks are required in meets. Do you bang your shins hard when you initially start the pull?
No, I don’t bang my shins (at least, I don’t think I do), but I make a point of trying to keep the bar as close to me as possible, which amounts to dragging it up my shins. I find when I do that, my entire posterior chain does more of the work, rather than the majority of the focus being on my spinal erectors.
When I’ve had a deadlift session without bruises, it normally hasn’t been a very good one, and I find that my lower back is WAY more sore than I think it should be.
Blue, LOVE that you’re the poster girl for safe lifting - no one could make lifting look hotter or safer!
As per usual you’re doing great work!!
Also, I don’t get bruised shins - am i doing something wrong?!
Thanks Masch! No, you’re probably not doing anything wrong, and be thankful you don’t have to deal with the looks those bruised shins get you. ![]()

Now I’m at home, eating some tilapia, rice-stuffed vine leaves, and brussel sprouts. Does anyone else LOVE brussel sprouts, or am I the only weird one?
I think brussels sprouts is all about freshness and how they are prepped. My green veg is broccoli heads and fresh baby spinach. I can eat tons of those and fresh green beans that still have a lot of snap to them oooh and roasted asparagus with a touch of olive oil and a sprinkle of seasalt…mmmmm
LOVE roasted asparagus! I do it with a touch of olive oil, salt, pepper, and I finish them with a sprinkle of lemon juice. Mmmmmm!
You aren’t alone in the brussel sprout love! Although, I won’t touch the brussel sprouts at the dining hall because they look…odd.
Do you have any particular way of prepping them?
I don’t like brussel sprouts.
Back to deadlifting, I read somewhere that for each inch the bar is away from the body it’s equivalent to pulling an additional 10 lb. Could be a bunch of bunk, but it’s a good argument for hugging that bar to the shins.
brussels sprouts (if ya google them you will see the s at the end…they belong to Brussels i guess) ![]()
i roast them with shallots and olive oil, salt and peppa. or sprouts roasted with parsnips EVOO, S&P…mmmmmmmmmmmm yum. i can see why someone would hate them if they were just boiled or something. i call them martian heads btw. don’t they look like them?
sorry for your blah day. your light and boring squats is my current working range…
i’ve tried keeping the bar as close to my shins as possible but yet to get bruises like that. as long as nobody reports your beau for abuse, i think you are ok…
