Just got home, long day, youtube is uploading, meet results in 10 min. or so.
Wow, what a long day. There was a lot of lifters. I snuck in a little early and weighed in with the BOFs, made weight and then hit the door for a tall stack of pancakes and two omelets. I felt really good today, even having to cut. Went 7-9, all whites on the lifts I hit. I tried for the state record on M1-242 Raw squats and just missed. I just missed 314.2 on bench, then went 3 for 3 on deads with a 501.5. And 501.5 came up easy, no grind at all. All in all, I didn’t leave much on the table, and I am very pleased with this meet. I knew the last squat was a stretch, but I am pretty sure 463 would have gone. The head judge said I hit depth on my third, but I got stuck right in the middle. My third on bench was close as well, but, again, just got stuck in the middle. Here is the skinny in KGs/Lbs.
Squats: 185/407.9 (3w), 200/440 (3w, Meet PR +55lbs.), 212.5/468.5 (fail)
Bench: 125/275 (3w), 137.5/303.1 (3w, Meet Pr +38lbs.), 142.5/314.2 (fail)
Deads: 210/463 (3w), 200/485 (3w), 227.5/501.5 (3w, Meet PR +77 lbs., Lifetime PR +1.5lbs.)
Total: 565/1244.6 (Meet PR +178.6 lbs.)
It may take me a minute to get the youtube off private, I’ll do that right now.
Awesome work… I feel proud to ‘know’ you. Now I am going to go back to surfing 80s hardcore… music.

AWESOME JOB! Truly outstanding effort Jack. That’s an incredible add to you total.
Only comment I have is that you flare your elbows almost immediately off your chest, I’ve been told that later is better for that and to squeeze those lats to keep 'em in. But I don’t lift the pounds you lift in any way, shape or form…
Very nice meet.
Pete, George, thanks for waiting up for me. I appreciate it. I feel pretty beat up right now, that last squat attempt really took it out of me, but I am pretty stoked right now. George, I know what you mean about flaring. I have a hard time with that. Maybe that’s why my elbows are always fried.
Some side notes. There was some great lifting today. One of the Open 198ers opened with a 650 dead. Apparently he hit a 705 at a meet this summer, but he missed his second and third today. A 17 year old 220er hit a 617 dead, and a high school girl who lost her leg in a boating accident last year pulled over 100 lbs. without a prosthetic, then put on a prosthetic and hit I think about 150 lbs. Lots of cool stuff to see at a PL meet.
Oh, and apparently one of the lifters talked the gym owner (I am still a member there, but have been lifting at a different gym a little closer) into building a new deadlift platform with complete with band hooks. That should be done next month. I’d like to start pulling against bands.
jack- Awesome job …Congrats those are some serious numbers!!
Great job lifting JJack. The bench was nice with an actual pause as well. What weight class were you in ?
How did you feel after all 3 lifts were done?
Any change in plans now or staying the same?
Jack, that is just awesome! Great job and congratulations! You earned it…
Thanks OG!
Rick, I barely made the 242s. Its more weight than I want to carry, but that is where I am at right now. I felt pretty beat up when all was said and done. The missed squat attempt took a lot out of me. Frankly, I was really surprised by how well deadlift went. I would not have been all that surprised if my opener stayed pinned to the floor, but they all flew up. During deadlift “warmups” I pulled 3 and only three singles: 225, 315, and 405 and called it a day because I was spent by the time deads rolled around. We started squatting at 2:00 and didn’t get to deadlifts until 6:30. I have been basically sitting around the gym since early morning.
Plans? I am not sure that this point. I feel like squats and deads are still moving, but my bench really has not moved much since last March. Short term, I think a 500 squat and a 550 dead are not that far off. I can hit with a pause now on bench with what I could hit touch and go last March. Some progress–but not much. I’d really like a 350 bench, but I feel that this is a long way off. I also need more conditioning for general health. I’d also like to drop some fat so I can start waterskiing again. I am flat-out too heavy to do that right now. That’s basically my training wish list, but I don’t have a plan yet, and I think it would be hard to make my numbers go up on all three lifts and lose weight at the same time. So I need to figure out my priorities first. The WA USAPL state meet is in March, that will likely be my next meet.
Edit: Thanks, Skip, I appreciate it! (your post popped up while I was typing.)
Jack, two meet PRs and a LIFETIME PR in one meet! That is really awesome work. Give yourself a pat on the back from me.
Jack,
Excellent work, PR’s are always a good thing and meet PR’s are always a great thing. By the way, a 350 bench isn’t as far away as you think, once you get past that 300 roadblock (which you have) progress tends to come fast and furious. Nice job all around sir, 7/9 is pretty damn fine lifting.
About the benching I would suggest looking into/searching this site about Doug Hepburn and his methods. I use this alot with clients. This is the granddaddy of all periodization/wave loading routines and real simple.
Ok since you asked ![]()
Your starting training weight is something you can do for 8 reps with or 80% of 1 RM or since you just maxed you can you take 80% of 303 =240.
8 week blocks of work so 1 bench session a week- second pression session is overhead.
240x3,2,2,2,2,2,2,2. wk 1
240x3,3,2,2,2,2,2,2. wk 2
240x3,3,3,2,2,2,2,2 wk 3
Till you get all 3’s across the board then up the poundage by 10 pds and start over. Built in deloads with reduced volume in the beginning as well. The reps at the end are 24 like the total volume of 5x5 but done with 8 sets not 5 less taxing on the cns.
Sheiko/Smolov and all the eastern bloc countries are using this form of training and or own Mr Thibabidieu (sp?) with his “new” routine is this just in a slighly new package.
Really works - just have patience over a year (6 blocks of work) thats an additional 60 pds of training max. Just sayin…
Now if you stall just subtract 15 pds and start over from your failed attempt ie: you worked up to a 270x3x8 and can’t get 280 start over @ 265.
Hope this is food for thought.
Jack, you are most definitely in the midst of a 12 step program to Meat status.
Congrats on the stellar results.
Nice work, Jumpin’ Jack! You looked awesome!
Boy, wouldn’t I kill to be squatting so much that I’d need four spotters. Hee hee.
Your DL looked so easy for you.
What a nice powerlifting physique you have!
Outstanding meet results, that squat record is yours for the taking next time.
Been away for a few days and just seen your vid.
Fantastic work Jack. I wasn’t surprised. I knew you would do well just from seeing your progression reading your log.
Just failing on your 3rd attempts shows that you judged your attempts perfectly.
Rick, thanks for the programming advice. I am going to give that some serious consideration. The last time my bench moved anywhere it was using a Smolov-type loading scheme without the Smolov frequency.
Punny, Snapper, Joe, Brett, thanks for stopping in and giving me all this support. I really appreciate it.
GPP: Walk dogs up and down hills.
I am still trying to figure out what to run during the next cycle. I probably won’t start lifting again until next week and let my elbows chill out a little.
