Raw Power

Work stress can be a workout killer. Good luck with your project.

JW, good to see you, thanks for stopping in! Kimba, solving other peoples problems can be very draining indeed.

Deads day, 1’s, TM 450.

Deads: 45 x10, 135 x10, 225 x5, 315 x5, 365 x5, 405 x3, 430 x4, 385 x 3, 3, 3.

Notes: My head was not in it today and I didn’t have much bar speed. 430 x4 was pretty disappointing, after 405 x9 last deads day. My food intake has been low and the food I have been eating has been shit. And I have a ton of other crap on my mind. So there you go. I am still looking in on others, but not positing much. Thanks for checking in everyone.

I feel your pain on this one, truly I do. Don’t forget that you weren’t in on the creation of the problem, so there is only so much you can do in sweeping up the mess.

I know the feeling. Damn good training in spite of the crap!

Sometimes life needs to be the first priority, getting any lifting at all in those times is a victory.

“Every minute I stay in this room, I get weaker, and every minute Charlie squats in the bush, he gets stronger. Each time I looked around the walls moved in a little tighter.”

– Capt. Willard

1’s day, Bench, TM 270.

Bench: 45 x30, 95 x10, 135 x10, 185 x5, 225 x3, 255 x7, 245 x 3, 3, 3.

Chest Supported Rows: 1 Plate x 10, 2 Plate x 10, 3 Plate x10, 4 Plate x 5, 4, 4, 4, 3 plate x10, 2 plate x 10.

Incline DB Bench: 65 x10, 95s x10, 75 x15.

Cable Rows/Pec Dec Superset: Some x 10, 10, 10, 10.

Notes: I had a big project kicking my ass 24-7 and took an unplanned deload in the middle of the cycle. I got fatter and weaker, but I made some good money, and the client seemed happy, so I can deal with it. Less than two months to the next meet, so I am going to try and get more focused on training.

welcome back JJ! 255x7 looks pretty good, big project/unplanned deload or not

That last post of yours was full of win! Except for the fatter and the weaker, but you can fix that.

good work Jack. what meet are you doing?

Thanks, Kimba, for stopping in. Pete, I am doing a USAPL full power meet in Fife, Wa, Dec. 4. Its a pretty well run meet, last year they filled up every available slot.

1’s day, squats, TM 415.

Squats: 45 x 10, 135 x10, 225 x5, 315 x5, 355 x3, 395 x6.

Front Squats: 135 x5, 225 x5, 275 x3, 315 x 0.

Notes: Squats felt pretty good today, no issues with depth. I caught the J hook on rep 5 of the money set, and that threw me a little, but I hit 6 anyway. I may have had 7 in me. I am not sure what happened on front squats, but I got a little wonky on the bottom of 315 and dumped it. 315 felt heavy this week.

“No charges sir, orders!”

Good to see you back at it JK. Those pesky work related projects can really spoil the fun.

I’m trying to figure out how I can do my Nov. 7 meet. I return from China the day prior. May just man up and do it.

Nice having you back Jack. Really sweet benching and chest rows

Joe, that’s a great line among many great lines. OMP, I say man up and do it. You might as well blow the cobwebs out of the plane ride by lifting some iron. JW, thanks for checking in on me.

1’s night, press, TM 180.

45 x20, 95 x10, 135 x5, 155 x3, 170 x6, 155 x 3, 3, 3.

Wide Grip Pullups/Fat Bar: 5, 5, 4, 3, 3 (most of these were legal).

Dips: BW x 10, +50 x5, +80 x3, BW x10.

HS High Rows: 50s x20, 70s x10, 90s x10, 120s x3.

BD OHP: 60s x10, 80s x no-clean, 70s x 8.

Notes: I felt pretty good tonight, but press strength is still down a bit. Also, I couldn’t get the 80s cleaned into position–I tried about 5 times. I got them to my shoulders but could not get them stable.

5’s day, DL, TM 460.

Deads: 45 x 10, 135 x10, 225 x5, 315 x5, 355 x5, 395 x9, 365 x5, 5, 5.

Hamstring Curls: 5x5.

Notes: I felt good tonight, but my lower back was on fire after the last set so I skipped GMs. DLs feel like they are coming along, however.

Looking really strong Jack.

Jack, you do have a training plan leading up to the meet? That date will be here before we all know it.

I was wondering the same thing. Are you going to stick with 5/3/1 the way you have been doing it, tweak 5/3/1 to make it more competition friendly, or do something else altogether?

Thanks DCA, I appreciate it. Kimba, Carl, I was seriously considering running Smolov base again + smolov jr. for bench, but I don’t think its realistic with my work schedule. So my plan right now is to run one more 5-3-1 cycle and try and compress it, and I may run bench on press day as well and use press as assistance.

I’d like about two weeks of heavy doubles or triples on each lift with little to no assistance after this cycle. Also, I need to get some cardio in to stay in the 242s. I’m a little over right now.

As you know, this program gets the work done for sure. But squatting 4x a week is tough on the schedule (not to mention the body). No way could I do it for bench or DLs.
