Rant About Today's Music

Another personal favorite, Not to Touch the Earth. Now, this song is another example of lyrics that could mean anything. Personally, I think it has a lot to do with the JFK presidency or perhaps some sort of juxtaposition of the East/West conflict regarding China/Vietnam and the U.S.

Not to touch the earth
Not to see the sun
Nothing left to do, but
Run, run, run
Let’s run
Let’s run

House upon the hill
Moon is lying still
Shadows of the trees
Witnessing the wild breeze
C’mon baby run with me
Let’s run

Run with me
Run with me
Run with me
Let’s run

The mansion is warm, at the top of the hill
Rich are the rooms and the comforts there
Red are the arms of luxuriant chairs
And you won’t know a thing till you get inside

Dead president’s corpse in the driver’s car
The engine runs on glue and tar
Come on along, not goin’ very far
To the East to meet the Czar

Run with me
Run with me
Run with me
Let’s run

Whoa!

Some outlaws lived by the side of a lake
The minister’s daughter’s in love with the snake
Who lives in a well by the side of the road
Wake up, girl, we’re almost home

Ya, c’mon!

We should see the gates by mornin’
We should be inside the evenin’

Sun, sun, sun
Burn, burn, burn
Soon, soon, soon
Moon, moon, moon
I will get you
Soon!
Soon!
Soon!

I am the Lizard King
I can do anything

The Crystal Ship, another great example of the incredible tone to Morrison’s voice. The lyrics are great too, considering it’s just a simple love song. But who the fuck writes a simple love song with these sorts of lyrics? Someone not afraid to push boundaries and who thinks outside of whatever box most of the music world in the mid-1960’s was in at the time.

Before you slip into unconsciousness
I’d like to have another kiss
Another flashing chance at bliss
Another kiss, another kiss

The days are bright and filled with pain
Enclose me in your gentle rain
The time you ran was too insane
We’ll meet again, we’ll meet again
Oh tell me where your freedom lies
The streets are fields that never die
Deliver me from reasons why
You’d rather cry, I’d rather fly

The crystal ship is being filled
A thousand girls, a thousand thrills
A million ways to spend your time
When we get back, I’ll drop a line

Once again, another song with lyrics whose meanings are ambiguous, but in an adventurous, open-ended sort of way. To me, it’s about a guy trying to get his girlfriend to try and break through the boundaries of normal society, perhaps with drugs or perhaps just shedding normal societal conventions. They go too far in the end and it costs them their lives, figuratively or literally, all while using the ocean as a metaphor for the great unknown void that they are entering by taking whatever chance it is that they’re taking.

Let’s swim to the moon, uh huh
Let’s climb through the tide
Penetrate the evenin’ that the
City sleeps to hide

Let’s swim out tonight, love
It’s our turn to try
Parked beside the ocean
On our moonlight drive

Let’s swim to the moon, uh huh
Let’s climb through the tide
Surrender to the waiting worlds
That lap against our side
Nothin’ left open
And no time to decide
We’ve stepped into a river
On our moonlight drive

Let’s swim to the moon
Let’s climb through the tide
You reach your hand to hold me
But I can’t be your guide

Easy, I love you
As I watch you glide
Falling through wet forests
On our moonlight drive, baby
Moonlight drive

Come on, baby, gonna take a little ride
Down, down by the ocean side
Gonna get real close
Get real tight
Baby gonna drown tonight
Goin’ down, down, down

Agree with the Morrison posts as well. I would lovingly SLIT the throats of Gaga, Beiber et al to have either Morrison or Freddie M back on this planet singing ! It could “possibly” be stated that pearl jam somehow tried to save rock n’ roll from the depths of '90s hell, such is the voice of eddie vetter…
Mr Contrary here…

Gaga’s music IS utter crap. But I once saw her singing a blues and playing piano. The girl can really sing!

I’d trade out Mercury to have Ronnie James Dio back.

I’d go as far as saying Alice In Chains and Soundgarden tried saving rock from hell as well.
Alice in Chains put on a good show. But rock basically became terminal once Guns 'n Roses implored.

Yawn. Wow, amazing, but the words are a more powerful sleep aid without the music.

Dumbfuck Bruce Springsteen is 20 times the poet that douchebag Morrison ever was. I don’t even like Springsteen all that much.

While Morrison was clogging up radio waves with his drivel then face down dead in a toilet stall, Gil Scott Heron coming up on the scene with real socially poignant poetry and commentary capturing the state of the world from his perspective (and with real musicians).

Here’s my salute to GSH:

"A rat done bit my sister Nell, Jim Morrison's bloated ass is dead in a cheap hotel, and Whitey on the Moon."

Electronic music sucks:

Only people from Northern California say Hella and even there it is fucking GAY.

I like all of those songs but:

A) Kanye is still a fucking assclown

B) Most people in here are probably not in their late teens/early 20’s, but good music should be timeless

C) Nobody fucking says hella hahaha

Is this a thread where we drop good music?

Well street hip-hop is alive and well. Saigon, and he lifts weights too.

So like all music threads eventually do, this one has broken down to the part where people just post whatever they find subjectively appealing, and assert that it apparently settles some kind of debate.

At least when the argument is about technical merit and social impact/lasting impact there is something tangible to be discussed =/

Aye, so, anyway…

Is this where someone drops a critical statement using larger-than-necessary words to feel intellectual superiority rather than actually contributing to the discussion one way or another?

EDIT: I actually agree, I’m just bored and felt like being a prick for a second lol

LOL! Totally agree! I LOVE GSH!
I admit that I also like the Doors… but only since 2 years ago. I couldn’t care less about Morrison’s crap lyrics. It’s the WAY he sung them that I found mesmerizing. Also, he had an almost crooner/Sinatra-esque approach that no one in rock at the time had.

This thread seems to bw asking two questions:

What is the role of music in contemporary society?

Is it okay if it just sound pretty? and/or leads to sex?

If we expect music to reflect and critique the current time, isn’t it the case that most contemporary music is banal because if reflects a staid culture of which we are both replicators of and sick of as well?

Those musicians who strive to critique are more easily dismissed by radio because radio is a product and complict in the very culture the musicians are calling into question. Perhaps that is why when GN’R is on the radio it is more likely to be a ballad than Nightrain (one of the best pure rock songs in my opinion).

So, let us address.question 1, what is the role of music?

Anyone who cares about people saying hella is fucking GAY.

FWIW, not only people from Northern California say it.

Ya I know it came off like from on high, talking from a pedestal, etc; I really just do get sick of every music thread ever breaking down into what is essentially ‘my taste is better than yours.’ Especially when that thread was producing some solid conversation prior to that point. There are numerous threads on these boards dedicated to just posting youtube links to your favorite songs of different genres, people can do that there =[.

It isn’t worth shit.

I don’t think calling it out in the first place (much less responding to that callout) deserved a whole post. But that’s not my point anyway.

My big question here is WTF is Agressive Napkin supposed to be referencing haha?
Iron Dwarf wrote:
Yes, people are musically stupid. No one can sing anymore without Auto Tune. No one plays their own instruments anymore. There’s so much sampling going on that no one need to write their own riffs anymore.
Reminds me some of software development:
to have a shot at making it somewhat big, you need to have a good overview of the tools at your disposal and hash them together in a smart (i.e. goal-oriented) way. You need to know about the ‘glueing objects together’ skills, not so much about the skills needed to create said ‘objects’ you want to glue together.

@roguevampire
Just listen to something organ-based.
