I don’t feel like reading the middle pages of this thread, but it seemed like people quickly lost interest in the fact that RogueVampire is writing a book. Did anyone offer to edit that for you RV? PM me, I’d love to take a look at it and I’ve got some experience editing for a local arts and lit. journal.

That’s already been covered and beaten to death in a past thread dedicated to his book.
Think about it one second, do you really think a group of people listen to a thousand song and choose “the best” 40 ones every couple of week? Popular music is labeled as already popular the second it comes out, that is what makes people buy it. The point for the people that distribute and inflict this music on us is to make money. Who gives a fuck about art and weird chords? If you are not a fag make your own music research. I know it is not easy but it is better -in the long run-. Oh wait I remember you are a huge dumbass so forget about that.

And I’ll tell you another thing. Hip-hop is about to die the same death that rock has been dying for about ten years now. Believe me, the economy is probably not going to get much better anytime soon. I expect there to be some serious backlash from middle-class whites (who buy most of the hip-hop out there) against rappers who constantly rap about how much money and wealth they have.
I’m already turned off by most of it as it is. “Empire State of Mind” comes to mind. It makes me want to fucking puke, even though it’s a good song. In fact, most of Jay-Z’s shit makes me want to puke. I don’t want to hear about how you live next to DeNiro in a fucking penthouse that 99.99% of the country will never be able to afford. I don’t want to hear shit about socialism or any of that shit, either. I just get sick of listening to people constantly brag about how much shit they have, period. I don’t like it in real life and I don’t like it in music.
Hip-hop is firmly in an 80’s asshole rock-type of phase right now. I think a lot of people got sick and tired of hearing in every song about these emasculated rockers with lipstick all over themselves were banging 10 different chicks every night. The backlash was severe and it will be severe when the country as a whole begins to get sick of hearing the braggadacio-type rappers pumping themselves and their egos up while the country continues to suffer economically.
On top of that, the music in hip-hop sucks. It hasn’t changed one iota in at least 10 years. Sure, there’s been some gimmicks here and there, like the super-sped up vocals from Kanye’s early productions and Autotune. But aside from that, nothing substantial. The Roots are the sole exception. I mean, Kanye West and Lil’ Wayne are geniuses? No, Miles Davis was a genius. John Bonham was a genius. Kanye and Lil’ Wayne are opportunists who couldn’t make a decent album without sampling other people’s shit if their life depended on it. Hip-hop has become completely stagnant. The only part of it that has any originality in it is the delivery and verse style of a few guys, mostly Jay-Z and Eminem.
It’s time for someone or some group in hip-hop to come forth and blow the scene up by stripping down the music to its most basic elements and rapping about shit that actually means something tangible. When a genre of music loses any mainstream attempt at being lyrically-relevant or being lyrically-relatable, it’s going to die out.
Excellent post
DBCooper is just a little to quick to apply the word “genius” to some of these musicians.
However, in reference to “Miles Davis” – right on.

What is your OBSESSION with me and my opinion of Jim Morrison? At least if I’m going to say something as bold as “he’s a genius”, I come on here, say it and then back up what I say with some sort of educated opinion, however long-winded it may seem. The fact that you basically come on here and say his lyrics are shit without explaining yourself makes me think you’ve maybe suffered some sort of personal setback in your music that Morrison didn’t and that you’re misdirecting your anger at rejection toward someone who you maybe don’t like that much but are incapable of explaining why. I mean, everything we’re talking about here is extremely subjective and opinionated, but I’d respect your opinion much more if you would at least explain your reason for holding it in intelligent terms.
OHH I need to come in here and complain about another song!! Also, will buy a black keys album next time I have money and am at HMV, so thanks for the suggestion people!
MOVES LIKE JAGGER, or whatever.
KILL ME. You are defiling Mick’s good name! Stop…just stop STOP RUININGGGGGGGGG things for me you stupid bad song !

LOL @ capitalized ‘obsession’.
No.
Don’t get me wrong. If The Doors come on the radio, I may or may not change the station.
The “Jim Morrison = genius” is overplayed, cliche and parroted usually by people who have heard other people say “Jim Morrison was a musical genius because he had a high IQ”.
Jim Morrison was briefly revived in the mid-late 80’s with the “Jangle Rock” surge to the light pyschedelia style then the following full 60’s rehash in the 90’s. All of a sudden his sub-par soapy lyrics were back en vogue and a generation of people trying to relive a generation long gone.
Remember the bumper stickers in the late 80’s early 90’s that real hippies had? – “Get Your Own Generation”
I leave the “genius” label (applied to musicians) to those who disrupt or redefine the boundaries of their genre or the musical spectrum. Miles Davis certainly did that and did it repeatedly. The Beatles did that. Jimi Hendrix and Edward Van Halen did that. Prince did that. Hell, Liberace did that. Hank Williams and Johnny Cash did that. Buddy Rich did that (John Bonham, while being arguably the most influential rock drummer ever was not ‘disruptive’ or ‘genius’).
Jim Morrison did not do that. Beyond the hype written about him decades later, Jim Morrison (and the Doors) weren’t all that popular when they were active and they certainly weren’t innovative. Every piece of video and book I’ve read or saw or about Jim Morrison reeked of “douchebag” more than “talent”, let alone “genius”.
Hey Jim, pick a key… any key for Christ’s sake.
I guess I regard the label “genius” in much higher regard. Lady Gaga-- GENIUS!

You left out Willie Nelson from the country list. He not only has shaped and challenged country music, he changed the way country was produced - at least for awhile.

I agree with that. I mean, I just picked a few that jumped out at me- my list isn’t exhaustive. Producers and engineers get left out a lot, too (eg Alan Parsons, etc).
One thing about rap/hip-hop is that it’s moved music production along. You may or may not like/love/hate the genre, but there’s no denying that there is a ton of talent in production.

I Don’t Understand What People See IN Todays Music
This is most definately a rant. My daughter always listens to either kiss 108 or whatever other station that hip hop crap is on. They say they play the top 40. Well, the top 40 hip hop songs maybe. Where are all the rock groups? Where? All i ever hear is that chick Adelle. Black eyed peas or that douche pit-bull. I absolutely can’t stand that type of music.
All these music shows, looking for the next great talent. Why are they always looking for a nice, pretty or cute, non controversial singer. How come they aren’t looking for the next Jim Morrison or Jimi Hendrix. Are people really that musically stupid. Sure my daughter has some better taste in music, she likes Disturbed and Avenged sevenfold. and even some metallica. I go in my gym, all they play is hip hop. Are you kidding me.
Even walk out music for mma fighters is almost always hiphop. Now and then, they will play some decent walkout music, when Randy Couture came out. Theyd play Ted Nugent. This is not the case of simply not liking todays music, there are a few good rock groups out there today, i just can’t stand hiphop, dance music, rap or any of that crap.
I can sympathize with this. There is no more authenticity in music. We went from classical music/opera , reduced now to people “rhyming” on one word now like “shot” , “baby” and “low” and fucking retards think it’s the greatest thing they’ve ever heard. How is it gonna de-evolve in 10 years? People just spitting into the mic and call it music? oh wait they already do that too

I maintain that there is a time, place, and mood for just about every kind of music. I like almost every genre at the right time and if my mind is in the right place for it, even some of the more reviled ones (hair “metal”, pop, country, etc).
One thing that I don’t get at all, however, is jazz. It sounds like a complete mess to my ears.
that’s a good point too. I play and teach violin in the day time, and then when I go out to the clubs, I enjoy and dance to “garbage hip pop” for a good time. Maybe it’s time to stop categorizing modern music as music. It’s like trying to fit everything into the “Art” box and people get pissed off because what’s out there in other people’s boxes aren’t in theirs and vice versa.
