And I’ll tell you another thing. Hip-hop is about to die the same death that rock has been dying for about ten years now. Believe me, the economy is probably not going to get much better anytime soon. I expect there to be some serious backlash from middle-class whites (who buy most of the hip-hop out there) against rappers who constantly rap about how much money and wealth they have.
I’m already turned off by most of it as it is. “Empire State of Mind” comes to mind. It makes me want to fucking puke, even though it’s a good song. In fact, most of Jay-Z’s shit makes me want to puke. I don’t want to hear about how you live next to DeNiro in a fucking penthouse that 99.99% of the country will never be able to afford. I don’t want to hear shit about socialism or any of that shit, either. I just get sick of listening to people constantly brag about how much shit they have, period. I don’t like it in real life and I don’t like it in music.
Hip-hop is firmly in an 80’s asshole rock-type of phase right now. I think a lot of people got sick and tired of hearing in every song about these emasculated rockers with lipstick all over themselves were banging 10 different chicks every night. The backlash was severe and it will be severe when the country as a whole begins to get sick of hearing the braggadacio-type rappers pumping themselves and their egos up while the country continues to suffer economically.
On top of that, the music in hip-hop sucks. It hasn’t changed one iota in at least 10 years. Sure, there’s been some gimmicks here and there, like the super-sped up vocals from Kanye’s early productions and Autotune. But aside from that, nothing substantial. The Roots are the sole exception. I mean, Kanye West and Lil’ Wayne are geniuses? No, Miles Davis was a genius. John Bonham was a genius. Kanye and Lil’ Wayne are opportunists who couldn’t make a decent album without sampling other people’s shit if their life depended on it. Hip-hop has become completely stagnant. The only part of it that has any originality in it is the delivery and verse style of a few guys, mostly Jay-Z and Eminem.
It’s time for someone or some group in hip-hop to come forth and blow the scene up by stripping down the music to its most basic elements and rapping about shit that actually means something tangible. When a genre of music loses any mainstream attempt at being lyrically-relevant or being lyrically-relatable, it’s going to die out.

Holy shit, I LOVE this album. If all you T-Nationers out there want to hear some of the most beautiful music ever made, in any genre, listen to this album. Concierto de Aranjuez (this song) is absolutely gut-wrenching. Saeta is quite possibly the most emotional, mournful trumpet-playing I have ever heard, and will ever hear. Solea is a personal favorite that I HIGHLY recommend. I’m part Spanish Basque, something like 1/8, but when I hear that song I feel all the Basque blood in me rise to the surface.
Fuck, there are some really good Miles Davis albums out there, but this just might be my favorite, if for no other reason than it is without a genre, cannot be labeled as anything but simply “music” and it stirs all sorts of emotions within me. Nowadays, there just aren’t that many albums at all that can seriously alter my emotional state the way this one does. There certainly aren’t any contemporary albums that inspire the multitude of emotions that this one does; most newer shit provokes one emotion, two at best. Sketches of Spain runs the gamut.
One could even say Jim Morrison “rapped” in alot of his songs. He really was just reciting his poetry, but its a form of rap, right? But that was jim morrison, everything he did was genious.
This thread reminds me of this…

Ehehehe
RV, today’s hip hop and rap is a total commercial bull crap. I love the mid/late 90s rap. Not the diarrhoea that Nicki Minaj or whatever her name is, shits on the radio. And when she does, I just change the station. Simple ![]()
You should check out the underground scene you’d be surprised how many talented and unknown rappers are there.

There’s plenty of rap like that, it just doesn’t get a lot (or any) of radio airtime.

The fact that it doesn’t get any airplay makes my point perfectly. I wasn’t referring to underground rap in my previous post. The fact that GOOD rap can’t make its way onto the air is a sign that the genre is stagnant and dying. The same thing can be said about rock. Who are the mainstream rock bands that get a lot of airtime? The Foo Fighters? They fucking blow cock. They’re a pop band with two really, really good drummers in it.
I think any genre of music is dead when it can’t survive in the mainstream. And by mainstream I don’t mean a bunch of top-40 singles. I’m just talking about national visibility and good album sales. Rage Against the Machine isn’t Top-40 material by any means, but in their hey-day they were mainstream and had at least two #1 albums on Billboard. The early to mid 90’s Red Hot Chili Peppers were the same way.
Shit, Led Zeppelin’s only top-10 single on the ROCK charts, not even the Billboard Top-40, was “Whole Lotta Love”. But they had something like 6 or 7 #1 albums. When a genre of music is alive and well, it isn’t the bullshit sycophants in that genre that consistently have the top ALBUMS in the country on the basis of one hit single.
It’s the good examples of the genre that dominate the charts on the basis of the entirety of the album. Why? It means that someone or some group out there is putting out a collection of great music that people want to hear. It reveals a strength in the music and also a change for the better in the listening interests of the general public.
Pretty Lights is probably one of my favorite newer artists. The above is easily in my top 10 favorite songs. Derek Vincent (who goes by Pretty Lights for his artist name) is doing what DB Cooper mentioned- he produces his own music, provides it for free while only asking for donations, and is actually getting fairly big on the live show front. In fact, he’s been putting together his own label and some of the artists he’s signed are kinda cool.
The music is on the electronic side of things (DV brands the genre ‘electro hip-hop’) but I think there’s some real artistry going on and not just some commercialized/gimmicky bullshit.
