Question to 'Squeezing Bar'

hi guys

I read the “bench press 600 pounds article” by dave and it is written that if you try to pull the bar apart your triceps will be more activated (because triceps gets tighter).

will the triceps also be a little bit more activated, if you just squeeze the bar (for example while the dumbbell benchpress)?

I know that i definetly have to squeeze, but I’m just wondering which muscle groups will get more activated, if I’m squeezing the dumbbells.

Because of my muscular feeling I asume, that the upper back, upper arms and the triceps get more activated, is that right? (but I’m not sure, my muscular feeling is not the best)

thanks in adavance, tommy

when you squeeze the bar tighter it should tighten up your whole setup, its kinda hard to have a tight setup and then grasp the bar with an open hand. Alot of the football kids do this shit and they are all over the place when they bench its distgusting. The pulling apart on the bar for me also helps with using my back as a base or springboard but thats just me

thanks for the quick response, bignate.

yes, pulling the bar apart also helps me also to engage the lats and gives a good foundation for pressing.
so squeezing is to stabilize the hole set up, ok.

so you can say that squeezing while the dumbbell press also helps to activate the triceps more?

I’d be very grateful for answering that question!

yours sincerely, tommy.

I don’t remember the actual terms but yes, I remember Pavel explaining this as the muscles cheer eachother on. Try this, hold out your right arm out, place your left hand around your bis and triceps and then make a fist with your right hand as hard as you can. Your bis and triceps should activate slightly.

Pulling the bar apart is a technique to engage the lats and upper back, for lowering the bar, to sort of allow your tri’s and chest to be more ready for the push, so to speak. Basically its all about engaging as many muscles as possible for the movement to move the most weight you can.

Since you can’t pull the bar apart you’ll just engage the arms more
