Hi, a quick one, i got this LCL on my left knee injury so basically the outside part of my left knee hurts when its extremely extended or bent. However, it doesn’t seem hurt when i did 6 rreps for around 70%RM squats but it hurts when i try to run.
It’s been 3 weeks already, it got better but seem stuck at like 80-90% recovered status, is it because I kept on taking some martial art classes and still lifting a lil legs workouts becasue i couldnt just take completely off, and the main question, should I do light legs workout to maintain strength or even upperbody workout or just rest completely until my knee is fully healed?
Have you seen a Dr or a sergion in regards to you LCL. I tore my MCL a few years back and they did not recommend surgery. It healed on it own, but I had to ice the hell out of it all the time. I worked hard on it too.
I tore my meniscus a different time and they opted for surgery. I was back squatting in a week. However, I rushed it way to fast. It didn’t hurt, but I favored the repaired knee just enought to give me other knee problems. I developed tendonitis in the other knee and my hips started to bother me as well. No relation to the LCL but do be careful to stay with strict form and not to favor that bad knee in order to avoid other problems. Ice the hell out of it. 20 minutes on and 30 minutes off. See a Doc too, and see what they recommend.
thanks, that helped me alot. I stopped icing a week ago cuz i thought ice was only needed for the first week and my friend told me to warm it alot too keep blood going to the area. and i’ll follow your suggestions, take legs work completely off my routine. thanks again

Does the knee make any popping or cracking sounds?

This is right on. I sprained my LCL but it didn’t need surgery, it can heal.
I tore my meniscus and needed surgery to get it trimmed.
I tore my ACL and needed surgery for that.
Get it checked out, ice the hell out of it and do not rush back into things too fast.
thanks guys, learned alot for that today, my own doctor never helped me on any of my past injuries so i didnt even waste time to see him, but now i’m thinking of going to some major hospital to find a better doctor.
I was gonna do some sqauts today(before i posted the thread) but when i was warming up on the stair stepping machine, i heard the popping sound in my knee(although it was a really minor pain momement) i decided to stop(still did 2 sets of squats in the end). I guess you are right, ice the hell of it, and rest. Is it ok to still do upperbody workouts though?
One more thing…you mentioned that your buddy said to heat it. Never heat it up unless it’s before a workout, and even then, I’d be carefull. Heat promotes swelling and fluid build up. Also, don’t ice it for more than 20 minutes at a time, I believe that will also creat swelling…I’m not sure how, but I hear things! Stick to the 20 minutes on 30 minutes off and repeat cycle and you should be great. And see a DR…could be something else in there too.
thanks, last a few questions, how many times should i ice a day? o and yeah, i just bought this knee pad thing, u wrap around it, is it good to wear during the day even during sleeping time?
and, most important, approxiamtely late how much longer will it be(3 weeks already)
Ice as much as possible. If your sitting there watching T.V or something, get ice on it! Even if it feels better continue to ice it…for a long damn time! Not sure what kind of knee thing you have. If it’s just a little compression band…do you have swelling? If you have swelling, get a compression wrap, which should be about as tight as a sock would be on your foot.
As for a neoprene knee wrap…I’m not sure. As you start to heal, MAYBE you can use knee wraps while squatting. It may help you gain a little confidence in your knee B4 you really jack on it and go heavy. I can’t really comment too much on if you should wear it all the time. If you have swelling…again, get a compression wrap, and keep the knee raised up…above your heart preffered (lay down with pillow under it).
Hope this helps. Byh the way…I stayed in a Holiday Inn express last nght…get to see a doctor as soon as you can.
whats the significant meaning underneath taht “staying in holiday inn last night” lol, didnt get it.
Anuyway, my knee didn’t and isn’t swelling at all, and this knee wrap thing kinda makes my knee more comfortable or maybe its just in my head. Anyway, i’ll keep icing it and i’ll go see a doctor either tomorrow or the day after(got 6 hours of college class tomorrow)
thanks for the help again

The holiday Inn thing…I guess you have never seen the commercials! Basically people are acting and thinking they are smater than they really are because they chose to stay at a holiday inn instead of another place…forget it!
If you feel the knee wrap makes it more comfortable, than I say wear it! Glad to hear your not having any swelling! If there is no swelling, there is a good chance you are mis-diagnosed! If you have a tear, there will be swelling.
I’ve never heard of a knee getting torn up without swelling. I pretty sure the only way to tell FOR SURE there is a tear is if you get an MRI. Do you have health insurance? Hope so. Again…get to a good doctor and they may recommend an MRI, but without insurance an MRI is pretty expensive.
thanks, I didnt get any swelling because the injury is only the outside close to back of my left knee that’s kinda “far away” from the knee cap where people normally get injured at. Anyway, thanks for all thge helps so far, imma go see a doctor soon and i’ll keep it updated

The reason that you ice for up to 20 minutes and then take a break is because of blood flow to the skin.
If you ice longer than 20 minutes the blood flow to the skin is disrupted by vaso-constriction due to the cold. The skin surface can then get down to the freezing point and frostbite can settle in. This damages the living layer of skin and gives you a thermal injury much like a bad first degree sunburn.
If you ice for longer periods of time repetatively without a break, the damage can become deeper. If you do this for a long time the skin’s blood flow may not be enough to support the cells and that area can die off and look much like a stasis ulcer or bedsore. If it occures at the fingers, toes, or any other appendage the frostbite can be bad enough to cause the need for amputation, but this is worse case unless you have a vascular disease that already restrics your blood flow.
THAT’S IT…as I read it, it all came back to me! At least what was told to me in the past! Just the part about the blood flowing to the skin. I knew that was bad…thanks for the additional info! Out of curiosity, how do you know that info? Do you work in that field?
