Since lifting weights when I was 15, now 22,(and only seriously for the past 1yr with diet/program) I’ve never used gloves or straps and rightfully so.
I can’t tell you how fucking annoying it is to see some tard next to me shrugging 225 with horrible form while using STRAPS. Or, and in this case i actually laughed out loud, when deadlifting 205, grunting like he was lifting a car all STRAPPED UP! The kid wasn’t even small.
Anyways, I was wondering when is it a good time to start using straps? Last time I checked I my 2rm was 355lbs. However, since I’ve been on the V-Diet I’ve been doing 10x3 with 315lbs so perhaps that’s jumped up to 375lbs…we will see once I start my bulk again.
Anyways I’m asking this because my hands have begun to take a heavy toll since using heavier weights for a longer duration. Last week the callouses on my left hand peeled off. It was a pain, but I continued my workout by just grabbing a paper towel. My grip was shit but I squeaked out my last two sets.
I know straps are mainly to help you with grip, but would it not alleviate the pressure on the hand as well? Maybe I just need to lotion my damn hands?
Not a fan of gloves or straps…I guess I’m just asking how the hell I should take care of my callouses.
i also dont use gloves or straps… rather i didnt before…
my callouses are so bad that i really dont need a wash cloth to wash myself.
i used straps to max out deads and they were great. my callouses arent agitated as much and i was able to pull 405lbs easily… something i cant do without straps :\ gotta start working on my grip. but then again im only 155lbs
From a bodybuilder stand point I don’t see how straps are a bad thing. It allows you to lift more weight then what your hands can handle. Your going to get some callouses best thing to do is to file them down when they get big so they don’t open up.
I’m just very put off by the idea of using them. I don’t want to just use them because my hands are starting to peel away.
Right now it’s not a question of my grip. I can grip the weight fine, I just don’t want to end up screwing up my hands to the point I have to lay off from lifting for an extended period of time.
I think I just need to start applying lotion to my hands. Hopefully this doesn’t have a negative affect and my hands become too soft and become more sensitive…
Also very nice DL for being 155. I’m almost 175lb and at about 9%bf, though I do have bad back and shouldn’t be doing these in the first place and can’t do that…though perhaps with straps I could. Still, very nice for your size. At least you’re not like the tards at my university gym he use straps to lift that incredibly heavyweight of 225lbs!
Just use a Pumice stone in the shower after lifting… like girls use on their feet.
I train strongman and my grip gets taxed about every workout, when you get big callouses built up where it hurts to grip the bar that is not helping you. Thats why I constantly am grinding them down with a pumice stone.
Using straps a lot could lead to lesser forearm development, from a bodybuilding point of view.
That being said They have their place and are not the extremely evil thing people seem to portray them as.
