Leg presses always hurt my lower back.
If some folks consider the squat unnatural, then so is the leg press.

If you need to ask you aren’t ready.
Give me her contact info. I will make sure she’s treated well.
If your knees hurt just wrap tighter. If you don’t use wraps you’re an idiot.
If you don’t want to squat, then don’t squat, do hacks and leg presses. It’s been done before, it’s worked well for a lot of people, I can name a shitload of IFBB pros that don’t squat, haven’t squatted, think it’s a shitty exercise, etc…You don’t need approval from a bunch of random dicks trying too hard to be hardcore on a internet board.
Most people here don’t even have a clue what works for them let alone what they should and shouldn’t be doing, and have no business telling anyone what and what not to do, so just be happy and do whatever makes your legs big and your knees pain-free. Just look at the avatar of most people that vomiting the same recycled information about squats over and over again.
“HURR DURR EVERYONE SHOULD SQUAT, HURR DURR IF YOU DONT SQUAT UR A PUSSY, HURR FIGHT THROUGH THE PAIN”
Here’s some legit advice, figure out why the hell does your knees hurt. Go to a doctor. Get an MRI. Do rehab/prehab. Chances are your knees will hurt no matter what exercise you do, THEN start cutting shit that hurts you. And if your knees don’t really hurt and you’re just making up an excuse because you don’t want to squat, then you gotta ask yourself why the fuck you’re making an excuse instead of simply not squatting anyway.
Yeah I’m pissed off.

try doing it single legged, with one leg on the floor. I find that keeps my spine from rounding too much and causing pain. Might be worth a try.

Makes sense. However, the machines they have at my gym are the ones where the SEAT moves… which makes a ‘one leg on the floor’ approach rather awkward.

hmm, in that case just sit on the plate and push the seat with your legs. Problem solved! ![]()

LOL!
I tried that. Equally awkward and painful.
Plus, gym management doesn’t look too kindly on “misuse” of their machines.

About being an idiot:
Completely agree with this. Yes, babies squat but not with a progressive load sitting on their back.
ATG squatting is only necessary if you’re being judged for a squat at a powerlifting meet. Your knee is essentially a hinge or lever. If you have really long legs, you’re putting a ton of pressure on that joint by going so low.
I also have seen impressive quads on people that compete in the mentioned sports. Some of them had way more impressive quads than people I have seen at the gym before.
Barbell squat isn’t the be all or end all of leg pressing movements. Plenty of other things that work that have been mentioned in the thread.

babies also aren’t looking to get jacked
babies also don’t bicep curl with full ROM
babies don’t bench bar to chest either
babies don’t do pull ups with chest to bar
your point being?

Absolutely, I am the anomaly in that regard. I was more trying to address whether the loaded squat had a practical value for accomplishing everyday tasks from a human kinetics perspective.
I think it’s reasonable to imagine that lifting heavy objects from the ground onto our shoulders then standing and carrying it would have value for us and so might well be included in our “natural” movement pattern (as much as dislike discussing anything in terms of “natural”). That’s all.
I actually don’t disagree with you at all. I suppose my original point was simply:
squats without pain > no squats > squats with pain
Agreed.
FTR, my comment was simply intended to relay my own, purely anecdotal experience with “real world” back loaded squatting. This was in no way meant to say “I squat and I’m fine so everybody else should or they’re a pussy.”
That would be dumb.
I would say that if you can’t squat without pain it might be wise to seek diagnosis and possibly treatment beyond just not squatting, because it could mean you have an underlying problem that needs to be addressed.

I see that sarcasm is alive and well in Ontario.
If you read my sentence, that was my point.
I have very long legs proportionate to my torso. On this very site, years ago, I read that you were a pussy if you didn’t squat ATG so I did. My knees are ruined. There is nothing that I accomplished that couldn’t have been accomplished by doing other exercises or by not performing full ROM squats all the time.
You’re 24, I’ve joined my first gym around the time that you were being born. You probably haven’t been lifting long enough to see any wear and tear yet but you most likely will.
Squats are fine for some people but there is usually more than one means to an end. Squats can build decent quads but you don’t have to do squats to have decent quads.

And there we go again! “Dan John says everyone should squat, blablabla”. Bullshit! I agree that every beginner should squat. But not everybody is built for HEAVY squatting (over 300lb). Squat is not more of a natural movement then let’s say upright rows. Still everybody agrees that upright rows could wreck your shouders. Idem for Neck Presses (shoulders), Skull crushers (triceps) etc.
Everybody is built in a different way. Problem is that bodybuilding evolved from weightlifting, a sport for short people. Tall (long limbed) people should not train like short (limbed) people.
I recommend bodybuilders to squat as long as possible, but when it starts hurting, spreading the hips or not producing any more results: ditch it! NO top bodybuilder is still squatting. They did it before to build a foundation, but then proceeded to mainly leg presses.
Actually, upright rows are a horrendously unnatural movement. They basically impinge your shoulder every time you repeat one. When you go in to see your physical therapist about a shoulder issue, the first thing he does is move your arm into the top of the upright row position to see if there’s an impingement there.
Squatting is a natural movement. We’ve been doing it since we were babies, and for some their form has progressively become worse since they were babies.
But you already knew all of this. You’re only on here to start shit and try and argue or contradict all of the advice you are on here seeking. So just get the fuck out if you aren’t going to be receptive to the advice of people who know more about this shit than you do. You should really just shut your mouth and thank everyone who is kind enough to respond with advice for you.
I really wanted to leave this thread and proceed to the bodybuilding section where less dogmatic people are posting. But this hate-message urges me to tell you, little boy, that I know 100x more about this “shit” then you do orn ever will, and I didn’t come here for advice from little assholes like you, but just to share some thoughts, insights and experiences. That’s because smart people, even if they already know 100x more then others, always value non-dogmatic opinions and are always eager to learn.
Anyway, thanks to all those who gave positive reactions. Join me later in the bodybuilding section. That’s the section for people seeking a life long lasting physique, not some mindless youngsters who are born so ugly that they gave up every attempt to acquire a pleasing physique, and instead - out of frustration - bash the bodybuilders and brag about how much weight they can lift NOW, not aware of the fact that at age 45 all they will be able to do is sit in their couch with a huge belly and wrecked joints and tendons, bragging about how much weight they USED to lift when they were younger.

Yeah, well SOME babies are.
lol
