Quad Dominant Exercises For a Bad Knee

Hey Guys,

Squats and Leg Extensions kill my knee (it fills up with fluid) but for some reason running is fine. I am looking for some suggestions on stuff to blast my quads without blasting my knee. I read “Joint Friendly Training” and the sled pulls sound great but I dont have any room.

I have had 3 surgeries on it so that is not an option right now. I MISS my leg traing day now that I have Surge Workout Fuel.

Any Ideas?

Thanks,
KraigY

Can you do lunges at all?? There’s quite a few variations you could try. Any idea what’s causing the knee pain??

Lunges kill me to. Not at the time but the next day? But I have hope because running is fine. I had a total reconstruction in 1988 and I have a lot of damaged cartilage and arthritis from that initial surgery. I have had several since to clean it up but it is just jacked.

What do you mean by total reconstruction?
Total knee replacement?
ACL reconstruction?
Menical repair vs meniscectomy?
Patella-femoral problems---->Lateral release?

Where is your arthritis? The back of the knee cap or knee joint proper?

Backward sled dragging.

I severed my anterior cruciate and detached my medial collateral from the bone. In the surgery they cut off half of my knee cap.

The arthritis is in the joint.

I don’t understand the cutting off of half of your knee cap. Is that from the graft? Using part of the patella tendon with bony ends?

I have arthritis in half of my knee, from the same injury (1984). Running hurts more than anything b/c of the impact loading, but I can squat.

It could be your squatting form?

Seems like running would be a bad idea. Have u considered bicycles. I hyperextended my knee on a motorcycle the hurt it while lifting. I had to start with partial bodyweight squats and very carefully ease up with the weight. Took me a year and a half to get back to what i consider good leg work. Bicycles are great for the knees.

Seriously, you should consider Power Factor training. If you have a bad joint, its the way to go.

In simplified form: you simply hold the weight in your joint’s strongest position and the weight has to be more than 100% of your one-rep max. I have bad ankle issues which makes full squats painful. So, working in the power rack (cage) load it up and simply do a 1" squat to shoulder it up, then lower the weight (above the safety pins!) until you just break full stance. You’re going for time under tension here. When you can hold a weight for one minute, time to up the weight.
