and who exactly is to say what we are “supposed” to like?

the whole post just seems like someone complaining that people have differing opinions on what is attractive…in both women, and how other men choose to present themselves. oh noes, some guy doesnt care about weightlifting and squeezes into tight “faggot” jeans - THE WORLD IS ENDING!! ‘REAL’ MEN ARE DISAPPEARING!!

people said the same thing about hippies with long “girl” hair 40+ years ago.[/quote]

I think he has much more of a point when people actually start acting like Beyonce is simply too fat and needs to lose 20-30lbs.

That isn’t about taste because we all have women we like and don’t like. That doesn’t mean we start calling people FAT when they clearly aren’t.

Some of these guys just seem to have no solid base in reality.

yawn It’s the interwebz and anonymous criticism is to be expected. Get the critics out in the real world and watch the opinions change.

i think the argument that is being made is do you like something becuase that is what you personally like or do like something because that is what everyone is telling you like.

gotcha, someone saying she’s obese is nuts.

however, someone saying that their opinion is she would look better if she lost weight, well its just opinion. then they get called crazy for having differing opinions.

i personally thought she was hotter a few years ago when she was a bit slimmer, but she’s still damn hot (obviously).

i have to admit, i grew up with a mother who was obsessed with skinniness. she called my older sister fat all the time, the reality was my sister only had the typical thickness most teenage italian girls get. this type of thing isnt anything new.

Hell, is it possible to even tell the difference anymore?

If you get “you won’t get laid unless you are slender, can wear skinny jeans and have abs!” yelled at you from several sources, chances are you will probably think you need to have some specific cookie cutter physical likeness for women (or anyone else for that matter) to like you.

Like most people, they just want to fit in. If there is no voice holding a contrary view, the outcome is a shit load of boys who think all of those traditional traits that are considered “masculine” (physically) should be avoided in favor of that one small ideal.

again, is this really new? how many guys had elvis haircuts in the 50’s, or beetle haircuts in the 60’s?

yea it is strange seeing these effeminate looking guys running around, but in a few years it’ll be something different, we just need to ride it out, so to speak. probably, the girls will get tired os weak men, and “the real man” may come back into style, never know.

EDIT: i understand it doesnt help most of our perspectives on this since most people here workout and likely are at least trying to get bigger and stronger. from a person who like to train vantage point, the ultra skinny guys are mind boggling.

People have been decrying the ‘good ole days’ schtick since they could communicate. It’s expected, but entirely prosaic. I think we can do better.

I happen to wear makeup and think Beyonce is attractive. I’ve never done a hawt abz pose, nor would I, but I own a very stylish jacket I wear as occasion permits. My father was never a major fixture in my life, but I pick heavy things up off the floor and eat bloody steaks. I want to join the military as a grunt, and I also paint my nails, which, unfortunately, are mutually exclusive activities.

Am I a ‘real man’? A metrosexual with his head in the clouds? Am I what’s wrong with the world today because I may not fit someone’s idea of what a man is or should like? Is Beyonce fat or hot? Is the media doing this to me?

That’s all bullshit. Who gives a fuck if others are doing something you don’t like? I’m sick of people acting like their way is the right fucking way. There is no right way. There is no wrong way. And it’s incredibly condescending to assume that even the most flaming metrosexual Beyonce-hating douchebag doesn’t have reasons for what he does other than to get bitches and because the media told him so. And it works both ways.

You people are so narrow-minded sometimes. It’s almost annoying.

Almost.

You wear make-up and paint your nails, that’s not normal for a guy.

Are you a closet cross-dresser too?

I could care less if you wear make-up in and of itself (even though I find that strange). We are talking about things on a grander scale than just you.

This is a bodybuilding/weightlifting website where most of us are trying to get “better” in some way. It is the ones who are here with the absolute minimum in terms of physical goals who think “hawt abs” are the ticket to getting laid by all women that we are discussing along with whatever makes a grown man look at someone like Beyonce and think “obesity”.

I wanna know what SickAbs has to say about this issue.

Also, do people look at powerlifters and ask if they are lifting for women? Do people look at Martial artists and ask if they kickboxing just for the girls? Why do people do that to bodybuilders as if the only reason we would be working hard in the gym is simply to get laid?

If you have so little going for you that your body is your only way in that door, that is pretty pathetic.

Similarly, why do men I either don’t know or would never date tell me that men won’t find my powerlifting physique sexy? Lifting is quite literally the only thing I’ve ever done that is just for me. Why try to shit on my passion when it’s none of your concern?

I think we men, as a whole, have become pretty fucking stupid the past 10 years or so. So much so that we forgo consious thought, and the ability to formulate our own opinions, and take the side of whomever the entertainment world believes is fit or beutiful.

Personally, I say fuck em. Their opinions are asinine anyways. Just look at the post LiveFromThe781 said above. I don’t think I need to go any further.

Unfortunately, bodybuilders have been hit with the ‘vain’ and ‘insecure and overcompensating for something’ labels since the beginning. It does seem odd that bodybuilding is one of the only things that has those types of blanket labels thrown on it and can’t shake it no matter what.

I’m sure that would be a really insightful post.

"i have to admit, i grew up with a mother who was obsessed with skinniness. she called my older sister fat all the time, the reality was my sister only had the typical thickness most teenage italian girls get. this type of thing isnt anything new. "

Italian parent are crazy. If you gained a few pounds they treat you like you need to be forklifted out of the house. Then, after weeks of badgering, you lose those said pounds and then try to feed the shit out of you becuase they think you are getting sickly. Makes no sense.

i still think a lot of people see bodybuilders as working out “for no reason”. football players work out to be better on the field, for example. a bodybuilder working out to look better on stage may not make sense to them. for many, the only reason to “look better” is to attract a mate. (this could also be why so many people let themselves go after they get married).

i guess what im trying to say, is that many people think you either work out to be better at sports, or to look good for the opposite sex. many peopel dont see bbing as a sport, so working out for a competition (and let alone your own gratification), doesnt make sense to them.

or i could just be way off the mark lol

Which is strange because while SEX is a great motivator, that is not going to keep you doing this into your 60’s like Robby (The Black Prince) Robinson.

At the core, I lift for me. I push myself to see where my own limits are. I LOVE the fact that many women seem to enjoy it too, but if I was alone on this planet, I would probably still be lifting weights and it wouldn’t be just to get laid by a professional model or a cheerleader.

I’m speaking on a grander scale as well, but the bigger picture has a basis in individuals like you and me. We are all trying to become physically ‘better’ here, certainly, but that includes the hawt abs kids. They don’t have the same goals as the bodybuilders, but neither do the powerlifters and they don’t get flamed to shit around here. Abs will get you laid by some women; as will muscles. Not all women like muscles and not all women like abs. It has nothing to do with what a man is, or an emasculated society. Some people think Beyonce is fat, just like a weightlifter like you thinks the hawt abs kid is scrawny. Is Beyonce fat? Not exactly. She carries more fat than some women, but she’s not exactly fat. Is hawt abz kid scrawny? Not exactly, but he definitely doesn’t have as much muscle as a bodybuilder. Some people here don’t like the pendulum swung so far away so they swing it too far toward themselves. It doesn’t make people idiots or lesser men to hold different views. I find the desire to be as muscular as possible a bit strange myself, but I won’t condescend to say it’s wrong or crazy, and I also wouldn’t deign to assume anyone with that goal ‘does it for the chicks’.

I do what I do for myself and myself alone, as do you, and, well, pretty much everyone. And that makes us all equally worthy. That’s what I’m getting at.
