Q & A, PW Style

here are some not really important questions/observations:

  1. I notice that as of 4-5 months ago, (correllating to increase in strength gains) I SMELL LIKE ASS! When I used to sweat, it was largely inert… but now i fucking stink like a gypsy.

  2. I feel like shit at the end of the day - headache, like I have a cold, nasty. Then I go to the gym, and it’s a fucking miracle, i feel 100% better, it’s really crazy.

  • anyone have the same experience?
  • any nerds have a biochemical explanation for this shit?

Have you upped your protein intake and decreased your carbs? When I have a higher protein/lower carb intake, my sweat is really nasty and my urine smells kinda like chemicals (ketones maybe). The increased strength gains could be from getting ample protein to repair the muscles.

I often feel the same way (#2), I have no clue why.

  1. use soap/deoderant.

but really, no good advice here. im pretty sure i never noticed a change in my smell, and i dont notice any of my lifting partners smelling awful. actually, they all smell pretty good considering a couple hours of sweating.

maybe i’m just fucked up.

  1. i looked at your diet somewhere you posted it and found it odd. if i remember correctly, you don’t eat much after you lift? maybe by the end of your “day” before the gym your bod is screaming for moar and the endorphins from the gym make everything clear up.

whether it’s am or pm lifting, ime, the gym either makes everything all better or mostly okay.

again- maybe i’m just fucked up.

  1. I started using men’s deodorant in high school because the women’s brands didn’t seem to work. The men’s work perfect. Recently, I discovered that Degree for women works just as well. Sweat smell is caused by specific bacteria, which some people don’t even have. So I suppose you could try growing an armpit culture and experimenting to find out what kills them (or maybe that just sounds fun to me…)

  2. I do get that! I thought it was just me being weird! I also noticed that my body has become really sensitive to what I eat and that contributes to that stuffy cold feeling you’re talking about. If I have no carbs for breakfast, and avoid junkfood (like pancakes and most of the stuff you listed as eating), it mostly goes away.

I like Mitchum unscented gel, which actually has a nice subtle white musk fragrance. Unfortunately you can’t get it in the UK - I usually buy some if I’m Stateside, though. You can get it in Walmart. Otherwise I use Gilette men’s gel if I’m buying here. It’s effective.

My sweat generally smells fine if I’m eating clean but can vary according to my cycle. On some occassions my right armpit gets a skunky smell. Only the right, though. Not sure why!

Regarding the cold feeling, it sounds like overtraining possibly, or it could be withdrawl from exercise endorphins.

I don’t think I stink - But given how much I smoke that probably doesn’t mean a great deal. I do find that a lot of the dry max gym gear that doesn’t change color when you sweat gives off a pungent smell when sweat hits it, though. I have some synthetic sort of plastic / rubber soled sandals that do the same.

Interesting about the high protein / low carb diet maybe making sweat a bit stinkier. How about dehydration? Just thinking about how urine can be more or less pungent depending on levels of hydration / dehydration. Maybe sweat is the same? I actually think my gym sweat smells less than my sweat at other times - because I skull back water fairly constantly during rest periods. And most of my training time is filled with rest periods.

I feel like shit at the end of the day, too. Can hardly move. Things feel all seized up and I feel tired like I just want to fall into a coma. But then coffee and mobilization and I feel 100% ready to tear shit up. I guess I just thought it was because I’m totally addicted to the gym… Don’t know.

So I was talking to my aunt today who told me she wanted me to make her a workout to get rid of the oh-so prevalent arm flab around the triceps. I told her no problem, but she wasn’t finished. She said it had to be done with only 3-5 lb dumbbells, because Tracy Anderson told her so.

I admit, I immediately got frustrated because that name and the idea of only using 3lb DB’s just makes me snap and my blood boils.

Anyway so after trying to no avail to explain to her why this is stupid, there were a few points I couldn’t get past with her. Maybe you guys can help me out.

  1. But Gwenyth Paltro works out with her, and all those other celebrities. I want to look like them. Why would they work out with her if her methods aren’t effective, and how do they look so good?
I have NO idea why they work out with her. I said they look that good because they’re younger than her, eat very little, and honestly probably just look that good naturally.

  2. But my friend does and her arms look great!
I don’t know how to counter this other than, are you your friend?

  3. Why don’t the magazines show any women lifting heavy weights if you say that’s the way to go?
Again, I DON’T KNOW! Why do they advocate crap? Can’t you make just as much money selling people weight lifting equipment as a useless dance DVD?

  4. I’ve never seen a woman who lifts weights not look bulky and huge. (Disregarding the fact I lift weights and am not bulky or huge, though I am larger than she’d like to be)
I was trying to look up some pictures of tiny female powerlifters but came up short. My default is usually showing Sarah Bertram from USA Weightlifting but I was looking for some more examples of lighter women.

If anyone has any pictures I could use, could you PM them to me? Or I mean, post them in this thread, I don’t think anyone would object to some pictures of awesome female lifters.

I’m terrible at debating in person. I need to get better at that.

  1. Paltrow has osteopoenia. That’s a precuror to osteoporosis. Looking like that has a very nasty price.

  2. Exactly so. Genetics.

  3. Because the mainstream hasn’t caught up. Show her videos and pictures from some of the logs here. Nadia and Kimba are both buff but fall into the non-scary category, but both are lifting heavy. Perhaps we can inspire her.

  4. See point 3.

Actually there aren’t any women here that I would classify as very big and scary looking; bitchy perhaps but that’s not what the issue is right? ha.

You could show her a ton of pictures of very lovely looking women from this site or the older ladies from over 35. Snap is rather petite and delicate.

Personally I think you’re fighting a losing battle. She isn’t interested in lifting heavy and she’s already made up her mind.

  1. ya sure, celebrities ALWAYS do what they say they do. and they dont have personal chefs or trainers or makeup artists or stylists or maids or nannies. come ON! how come they get “discovered” when billy buttfuck down the street didnt?

  2. your friend is lying to you. or what shes doing now isnt why she has great arms.

  3. bc the general population is horribly misinformed about women being strong. same vein as gay people getting married and black people voting. also, body type preference comes into play. my mother assures me that i look manly, my legs are too big, and that no one outside of Pegg will find me attractive. i tell her shes a fat disgusting mess and it’s all her choice, just like the way i look is my choice, but only one of us is getting fucked on a regular basis. (I’d leave that part out of the convo with your mom)

  4. that’s because you havent been looking.

i’d just tell her to go do whatever stupid program tracy anderson says, then. then when she gets tired of not seeing any progress maybe she will be ready to try something else.

I was wearing a tank top yesterday and my daughter looked at me and said, “Mommy you look strong.” And she wasn’t at all disgusted about it. And while I’m not big, I can fit into a small size, I also don’t look like Gweneth Paltrow. Lifting heavy will change her body. Not many women really want that look.

I don’t think you can change someone’s aesthetic ideal, although I certainly understand the desire to do so.

It still stns me that anyone would TRY to look like Gwenyth

Well why not? Look at her. She’s got a double headed penis in each hand. She’s totally awesome.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one whose first thought was that her “dumbbell” looked more like a dildo.

I just want to know what stylist recommended that shirt with her body type. She looks like an anorexic, elderly man preparing for a wrestling match.

Yeah, the low-slung boobs don’t do her any favours. Reminds me of Ric Flair. Only skinnier.
